Ask a BU Freshman

I have a 4.0 and have taken every demanding course my high school offers…
(Class rank 11/326)

undeclared engineering major
gender: female

Junior Year-
AP Calc (A+, A)
AP US History(A, A+)
AP English (A, A)

Senior Year-
AP Chemistry (A+)
AP English (A)
Honors Physics (A+) and next semester I am switching into AP Physics (without taking the entire course…I want to show college admissions staff that I am looking to challenge myself)

I play Girls Varsity Lacrosse
I have received many Faculty Awards in Math and Science
I am in Interact Club, Student Council, Humanitarian Club, Debate Club, and in the Student Leadership Organization

I am not an excellent standardized test taker; however,
SATs-
630 Math
620 Writing (10 on my essay)
560 Critical Reading

ACTs-
31 Math
29 English
22 Reading
22 Science
(10 on my essay)

What are my chances of getting accepted to BU?

Hmm 00001- I feel like they will probably accept you regardless of your sats. They are far from horrendous even thoigh they’re below bu’s average. You are obviously a great student going into a very challenging, hands on field but you can’t take tests. Perfectly understandable. You’ll probably get in. Chance me?

Also use some of the wealth of info available on sites like the students review.com, princetonreview.com web sites. Yahoo Answers also is a great resource.

Thanks… do you think there are any chances that I would receive a scholarship?

Is it possible for two people to request to room together?

Moxess, as a freshman, your floor is completely random. You rank dorms by preference, but you can’t pick where exactly you will live as a freshman.

timesnewroman, you can request a room with someone else. I actually picked my roommate now from a BU '13 facebook group. I went into it openly, considering it random like usual but a little bit safer. We’ve become friends and she’s been an incredible roomie. I lucked out. It seems to be just as hit or miss as picking randomly though. I’ve seen cases where it failed and others where it worked out both chosen my way or completely random. Of course, if you’re talking about a friend at home or something, it’s a whole different story. But nevertheless, you can do it.

0000001, I’d say your chances of getting in are excellent. Financial aid at BU is determined both by need and academic merit combined, so it depends on your circumstances. In addition, you can apply to specific scholarships and receive other scholarships. It’s a tricky situation to predict, but you have a decent shot especially if you have need.

What are the housing options for freshmen?
Is a mutual request to room together usually granted?

I am on B tower and I think I have a terrific view! It overlooks Cambridge. Of course this is only because I live on the end of the tower. But there are a couple of dorms that have nice views in B tower. You really don’t want to get a really high floor because its annoying to have to deal with getting up and down >_< - but you can’t really choose where you live, unless you request a specialty floor.

timesnewroman: Most freshman live in Warren, West, or Towers. However it is possible to live in some of the other dorms such as Shelton, Myles, or Hojo. There are a few freshman that also live in the Brownstones on Bay State or South campus. It all depends on what you are looking for. If you want a social atmosphere where there are mainly other freshman, I’d choose either Warren or West. Towers is a good balance between social and still quiet. The other residences aren’t good for meeting other people and are usually a lot quieter, but the rooms are really nice!

If both you and the other person request the same housing then most likely you will be put together.

Thank you! I appreciate the feedback. Could you tell me about Shelton, Myles, and Hojo?

timesnewroman,
There’s actually a really good guide that the student union puts out each year that goes over the basic info for each of the residence options. This version is from last year, but it hardly changes year to year. Some of the opinion is subjective, but overall it weighs pros/cons/distance/etc of each dorm. You can find all three that you asked for (and any other) here:

Do you know any students at BU who are members of the sailing team? I was so excited to hear that there’s a sailing team and I was wondering what it’s like.

Also, what is your opinion of the foreign language department? Do many BU students study abroad as well?

I live in Warren on 17B and I have a pretty decent view overlooking the Charles River…nothing like pulling an all-nighter during finals to be treated with a gorgeous sunrise! You don’t get to pick which floor you live on unless you request specialty housing (e.g. 15-17B are all pre-med floors)

Pre-med as in the Pre-med in CAS or the pre-med majors in Sargent? Cuz my friend and I are doing Sargent and I’d really like to get that kinda view lol. You can tell I have my priorities straight :P

Someone told me BU isnt a party school…how true is that?

ch0iminy, BU is a huge school in a city. There are MANY ways to go out and have fun. Like most colleges, you can find parties if that’s what you’re interested in…and if you’re not, I think BU has a lot to offer on that front too. However, many students do attend various parties during the weekends ranging from those at MIT Frats (that practically are on our campus) to other gatherings.

That being said, I don’t think of BU itself as a “party school”. I think that a typical party school originates from a strong Greek life on campus. In general, stronger Greek life tends to be found at non-urban campuses. It isn’t actually at BU where most of the parties are, unlike at a smaller school. However, being in Boston opens up tons of options that make that unnecessary anyways.

How hard is it to get into the engineering majors as they are usually impacted at most schools. My GPA is pretty low (3.35 UW and 3.65 W) but I have a pretty good SAT score (2190) and a really good personal statement/letters of rec?

I was mainly looking at the bioengineering major but am also willing to do Electrical Engineering if that’s easier to get in to? Do you think I have a shot of getting in to those majors with my stats?

EDIT: Oh and one more question. I noticed on the site that BU offers only one Bachelor for business and that’s “Business & Administration.” Is the “Core” program where you design a product and a business plan in your Junior year only for graduate students then, or the people getting the Bachelor in Business & Administration? If I minored in business would I still be able to participate in that Core program?

How easy is it to take classes across the different schools at BU/ design your own course of study?

I’ve applied to a lot of schools that have music industry/ business programs since that’s my area of interest, but I’ve also applied to BU since its a big university and seems to offer everything i’d need to make my own program.

I applied undecided to the College of Arts and Sciences and was hoping to take classes at other schools like music, business, and communications while at BU. Would I be able to do this easily??

NiklasK: Every student in the School of Management has the same major, which is Business & Administration. In the fall of your junior year, all SMG undergrads do Core. Then after that you declare your concentration, which in your case would be Accounting. Not sure if non-SMG major can participate in core, but I’m guessing not.

Ah alright thanks Hanita. Any idea how difficult it is to get into the engineering majors? Are they impacted like the medical program?
