Ask a Cal Social Science Major Anything

I'm a sociology major who transferred in Fall 2010. I'm pretty involved w/the sociology groups on campus and I'd like to think that I know the campus/L&S College&departments/transfer&enrollment processes pretty well. I love answering questions by fellow transfers, so ask away! :)

Congrats Class of '13!!

Sigh, I can’t sleep so I guess I’ll ask now haha:

1.) I saw that you got into cal and la. What made you choose cal?
2.) Do social science/humanities majors deal with crazy competition? (I’m an English major)
3.) Where do you live on campus? I keep hearing amazing things about Wada but I know they’re hard to get.

what about the booze restriction on telegraph? how do you cope with that?

yeah, where do you recommend living?
how has your gpa changed since you got to Berkeley? how has the courseload changed?
how much do you love/hate Berkeley?! (veryy subjective i know)
can you make the Cal 1 card during orientation?

thaaaankkk yoouuuuuuu and GO BEARS!!!<3

Yeeeah Janet :).

Hope your finals are going well! We need to hang b4 school’s out.

I am a Cultural Anthropology major about to start at CAL. How was the transition from CC to Berkeley?

oopsies poopsies I totally neglected this thread.

1.) I saw that you got into cal and la. What made you choose cal?
I will admit a big factor in choosing Cal over UCLA was academics. I visited Cal and I loved the white Beaux-Arts architecture and the overall atmosphere I felt was great!
2.) Do social science/humanities majors deal with crazy competition? (I’m an English major)
Social science/humanities classes are not curved (unlike the “hard” sciences such as bio/phys) so your grades will basically reflect the amount of effort you put in.
3.) Where do you live on campus? I keep hearing amazing things about Wada but I know they’re hard to get.
I lived in Towle in Unit 2 which is the mini-suite building. Unit 2 is where a lot of transfers are. Wada consists of 2 bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen, and a bathroom. Towle is basically the same thing sans the living room/kitchen. I personally enjoyed living in Towle because I loved having my own bathroom (well, which I shared with my suitemates). Everyone was pretty social wherever I visited.

what about the booze restriction on telegraph? how do you cope with that?

There’s a booze restriction on Telegraph? Well I don’t carry my drinks out in the open, nor drink on Telegraph, so this doesn’t affect me.

yeah, where do you recommend living?
I recommend living in Unit 2!! There’s a lot of transfers there, and you know, Unit 2’s the best.

how has your gpa changed since you got to Berkeley? how has the courseload changed?
OMGG don’t remind me, my GPA definitely dropped. But I attribute this to my own study habits. If you were always on top of things at your own CC, you’ll be able to handle Cal’s coursework. Don’t be surprised if you experience a GPA drop though :p. The courseload is definitely heavier, and more difficult (I never read Weber or Marx in my CC). You’re also expected to do more analysis. The important thing is to STAY ON TOP OF YOUR READINGS or you WILL get screwed over during midterms!!

how much do you love/hate Berkeley?! (veryy subjective i know)
I love Berkeley! It’s definitely it’s own city. It’s dirty, I’ll admit it, but it’s crazy and I love it. I love our campus and the Campanile, and I LOVE the eateries! Plus, San Francisco’s nearby so you can go there if you feel like there’s nothing going on in Berkeley. However, surprisingly not a lot of people go to SF that often.

can you make the Cal 1 card during orientation?
Yes you can! I made mine during my first week of summer school (late May) because I couldn’t wait to get it!

thaaaankkk yoouuuuuuu and GO BEARS!!!<3
GO BEARS!!!

I am a Cultural Anthropology major about to start at CAL. How was the transition from CC to Berkeley?
BerkeleyOrBust, please see my prior remarks on the Berkeley courseload.

And to everybody, good luck! Cal’s awesome and CONTRARY to the stereotypes laid forth here by CC nerds, many people at Cal are happy people who do not shut themselves in their academics! Cheers!

(Hayyy Nic!!)

^You never read Weber or Marx at CC? Maybe my CC courses weren’t as dumbed down as I thought… But I’m a political science major, so that may have something to do with it.

@nick_scheu Same here. Like you I’m a political science major and had to read Marx at CC, though did not delve into Weber. LACCD CC’s are surprisingly adequate in preparing one for UC work. Pierce, LAVC, Mission et al. have high percentage of UCLA transfers and let us not forget SMC. It should be noted that they prepare you for UC work if you’re in TAP, obviously. Honors courses are good primers for UC in terms of workload.

When did you have to declare your major? (Mid semester/ end of semester or w/e)

Also did you have to speak to the department heads to sign the paper in order to declare your major?

^I declared right during CalSO because I was paranoid about getting into all my classes and thought it was necessary to gain more benefits–not necessarily so. Yeah I had to send them my unofficial transcripts from CC and have an appointment with them. At least for sociology, it was no big deal. Once you get into Cal (L&S), you can pretty much declare yourself as any of the L&S majors so long as you have the pre-reqs.

Cool, thanks.

How did you do AT CalSo? Did you get the process in motion prior to orientation? I’d rather get it out of the way (and make sure that I don’t need any other lower divs).

omg whoops. It was fairly easy. At least for my major (sociology), it wasn’t hard getting what you needed to get done on your personal checklist. For more impacted majors like econ, I’m not entirely sure.
