Ask A Current Freshman

Yeah it’s just not the free buses. It’s like $2 each way or something.

So I’m signing up for CTOPS in June but AP scores won’t come out till July…what do I do about classes? can i sign up for advanced courses and then send in the scores?? I can’t go to a later CTOPS…and there are several potential courses I could place out of

If I were in your situation and I was confident that my scores would place me out of some classes, I would sign up for classes that I need. I think they advise you to do the opposite, but if you don’t place out, you can drop the advanced classes and add basic ones.

You can’t sign up for advanced chem classes ahead of time. There are placement tests you can take while you are there.

Don’t worry too much about classes though. You can definitely get into classes once the semester starts. A lot of people change their schedules around during the first week of classes.

Hi
I’m a Colonel Robinson Scholar, so is that different from the Carolina Scholars? What kind of opportunities would I have?
And since the scholarship covers room/board and tuition, what kind of meal plans am I limited to? Would that mean they wouldn’t give me money if I want spend money at …starbucks?
I still haven’t heard back about honors program yet, what are my chances of getting in?

Dante,

This is the first that I have heard of the Colonel Robinson Scholar, so I am not quite sure how everything will work in your case. Here’s my best guess, based on it being similar to the Carolina Scholars deal.

You get a certain amount of money for room and board. So depending on where you live, if it is a single or not, or whether it has air-conditioning, you may actually have extra money from housing covered. It works the same way on meal plans. Most meal plans account for actual meals in the dining hall, but they also have money set aside for dining flex. Dining flex can be used for starbucks and stuff like that. I hope that helped a little. Just ask if I wasn’t clear enough anywhere.

As for Honors, I would be surprised if you do not get in. It isn’t unheard of to receive a scholarship and not get into honors, but it doesn’t happen often. And trust me, not getting is not the end of the world by any stretch. I didn’t get in, but I applied and am now in it.

Is Granville ok for OOS Freshman or will I feel totally out of place?

Hey Dante,

I’m a Carolina and my best friend at UNC is a Robinson, so I think I can help you out here.

The money for the two is exactly the same. The difference is that Carolina Scholars a grouped into ‘pods’ and interact with one another and a faculty mentor while the Robinsons pretty much take the money and run (ie they don’t have any special programing). Carolina Scholar Pods get some money each year to do some activites. My pod (with some additional funding for certain things) has gone hiking in Asheville, done a high ropes course, had a pasta dinner and are going to have a pizza party next week.

For me personally, the pod is fun, but I don’t feel like it’s given me anything more than what you’ll get from the Robinson, so no worries. For me it’s just like being in a club that doesn’t meet very often.

You’re scholarship covers the average cost of tuition, fees room and board. Ie if you live in a non AC room, you’ll get money back. If you get any meal plan less than one of the the most expensive ones, you’ll get money back. On the other hand, if you live in a swanky dorm, you may not get money back.

You’re scholarship money can directly buy food through the university meal plan. You can use that money towards dining swipes or dining flex (which you can use in UNC locations other than Top of Lenoir or Rams) that you can only use for food.

Now, if you get the less expensive things throught the university, you’ll get a nice refund check with the excess money from your scholarship. This can event be direct deposited into your checking, which is pretty nice. This happens a little after school starts, so you could then use that money for starbucks and other Franklin Street dining - or deal with the dining halls and put the money toward books.

Keep in mind this only works for out of state full rides. In state is different. Check out pricing and the value of your scholarship to try to figure out what you balance and potential refund is.

Hope that helps!

Confused,

I think you would fit in fine at Granville. From my experience, I’ve found that students in Granville tend to stick together more than others on campus. There are other freshmen there, so you wouldn’t have a hard time making friends.

I know that this question’s been asked many times…is it hard to fit in among the vast population of north carolina students as an international student?? And also, how is UNC perceived in the US? If you say that youre from UNC would they know that it’s a very good school? Only right now im divided between UVA and UNC, and the only thing concerning me is that UVA somehow is described as more “elite”

Thanks Carolinagirl12
I actually visited UNC yesterday and ended up watching the game at the Smith center last night. My mind is made up :)

DO you know if the transfer community is well-received at UNC, or is there really no difference entering as a transfer

Hey gkgkgozldaht,

I’m an entering freshman into UNC and I can answer your question. I also got into both UNC and UVA and i’m from VA. Both schools are really good academically and people would definitely know what you’re talking about if you say “I went to UNC/UVA”. However, I believe that UNC would be a better choice, particularly for international students, because no offense to UVA but it is a “bro school”- meaning a lot of crazy partying people.

In my high school about 50% of the IB senior class goes to UVA. This is because it is easier to get into because we’re in-state plus our GPAs and SAT scores are through the roof. Less than 5% go to UNC because it is harder to get in because we’re out-of-state. I’ve visited both schools and honestly, without as much bias as possible, I think UNC has a better campus and a nicer community.

Is that chicken and cheese biscuit place really as good as it looked on Man vs. Food the other day?

Yeah, Time Out is good. Their hush puppies are greatttttttt.

Thanks for the previous responses! I’m still trying to decided between three choices, and I have just a few more questions…
How hard are honors classes? And can the usually basic chemistry, bio, physics (the pre-med requirements) be honors?
If they can’t be, how big are those classes usually? And how many people are pre-med at UNC? How are the advisors?

thanks. ok i have another question. I’m applying for housing and I’m torn between Morrison and Manning East communities. I want somewhere social but not too crazy on weekdays. and i know they’re both suite style but how many people share the bathroom excluding the super-suites. Also, on the application it says you can choose Hinton James community which has Horton and the Eringhaus/Craige community which has Koury but then it says Koury and Horton are part of the Manning East comm…i’m MAD confused. Also, if you get your first choice for community do you get to choose which building you want???
thanks in advance

how are the dorms? would you say that they are comfortable and spacious, or small and cramped? also, are there different types of dorm rooms at carolina?

next year I’m going to be a senior in high school in chapel hill, nc. i’m going to be taking a french class at unc because there are no other higher level french classes at my high school. do you think taking a class at carolina as a senior in hs will give me a little boost in admissions?

Dante,

Honors classes are harder than the regular sections, but they usually have a higher class average. They do have Honors classes for the basic biology and chemistry classes, just not every semester. It changes around a lot. I can’t think of an Honors intro physics class being offered. The physics classes can be small. Depending on your section it can be from 30-70.

A lot of people are pre-med at UNC and there are good advisers. There is also a pre-med association that meets once a week that is a good support group.

As for the dorm questions, here are a couple of links to previous housing threads. As for the Manning east question, Manning East is now Koury and Horton. DO NOT APPLY FOR HJ, EHAUS, OR CRAIG if you want those.

Loly, I doubt that would give you a boost. I could be wrong though.
