Transfer students have a different orientation program (TSOPS), but other than that after the first week or so there really is no difference between transfer students and first-year students. I would recommend getting involved with Tar Heel Transfers (THT), as they have lots of events specifically for transfer students.

My roommate and I were wondering about the housekeeping policies for suite-styled dorms (more specifically Morrison). Suite mates are responsible for cleaning their own bathroom, correct? What about laundry? Are we charged on FlexPass for each use? I’ve heard the driers are terrible - is this true?
What tips might you offer for having an easier time with everyday tasks like these? What other mundane issues have you come across?

Housekeeping for suites just depends on where you live. In Morrison and the other high rises, there are people that come by and clean the bathrooms everyday. However, if you live in one of the directional dorms or a super suite you are responsible for cleaning. By the way, showers are only cleaned once a week (in my suite at least) so that may be a problem for some.

You can do laundry by adding money to you expense account. Washing is $1.00/cycle and drying is $.50. From my experience with the dryers in HJ, more than once cycle is often necessary.

That’s cool to hear about the transfer programs…I am a potential transfer as well and I am glad to hear that they have stuff to help acclimate students to the Carolina environment. Does anyone know what the housing situation is for transfers? Is there a separate area just for transfers or are they dispersed throughout the campus? Thanks!!!

Transfers are spread throughout the campus. And the transfer acclimation actually sounds like a lot of fun. This year they had a giant twister game, and they had a chance to go skydiving.

Another thing, if you are a transfer and choose to live in Granville Towers, there is a transfers-only floor. Of course, you are also allowed to live anywhere else in Granville if you feel like being with people who aren’t transfers.

has anyone had any experience with the Connected Learning program at Cobb? If so, how did it go would you do it again and would you recommend an entering student do it as a way to get to know people

Also what do you guys think of the Cobb residence, I’ve read its on the outskirts of north campus so is it still close to classes

Looks like it’s impossible to apply to Manning East (Koury, Horton) or Manning West (Hardin, Craige North). The housing application lists them under different communities… that’s a shame. It also seems like they haven’t updated the application recently because Carmichael is still included, even though it’s closed for renovation. A bit careless on their part, I guess. Does anyone know if Old East and Old West be available for Fall 2009?

As listed on the housing application, you order each of the communities from 1 to 11 in terms of preference:

It’s not really impossible to apply for those particular dorms, but seeing how they’re grouped looks like its just random as to whether you end up in the directionals or a high rise.

Carmichael will not be closed for renovations. I’m not sure where you found that information, but feel free to apply for it if you like.

And yes, Old East and Old West will be available during Fall 2009.

Carmichael is not going to be closed next year. Part of it, Whitehead, will be I think. I talked to the community director of Carmichael a couple of weeks ago and I vaguely remember hearing something about that. But those two dorms in particular are really far apart. I’m not sure why they are in the same community.

The housing application for transfers sounds different from the one from returning students and first years. If the directional dorms are all listed with their respective high rises, I would definitely e-mail housing and see what is going on.

Gator,
Cobb is really close to classes. I lived there this year, and for the most part classes were 5-10 minutes away at most. I’m not sure about how you would apply for the living learning communities though. I’ll try to find out.

buzkashi–Are you possibly looking at an outdated web site? Because I remember my first year we had to apply for communities like you’re saying, but for this year they changed the system so that you could apply for specific dormitories. Also, that would explain why the site says Carmichael will be renovated (it was closed last year for renovations and reopened this year).

I love Cobb. I would be living there next year, but I am actually going to be an RA down on South Campus next year. I am not really that sad about going down to South Campus next year either. Of course, that might be because I don’t have a class until 10 at the earliest. A nice change from 8 o’clock classes.

Getting into Cobb can be difficult though. Honors students do get priority, and I don’t know where transfers rank on the priorities list.

Oh, and just in case there was a mistake, here’s a link to the housing department.

While I’m totally happy with my transfer here I will say that they could handle the experience a lot better. It would be really easy for them to house transfers together on the same floors or in the same dorms but for some reason they don’t do this (why?). I happened to get a suite with 4/8 transfers but the rest of the dorm is pretty much all returning students.

It’s a really good idea to do the activities and stuff they put on for transfers as it helps your transition but don’t let anyone tell you the experience is perfect. It’s tough fitting in as a transfer anywhere but if you put in the extra effort it can definitely be worthwhile.

Does anyone know it it is possible for an Honors student to choose a non-Honors roommate on Roommate finder and have us both get into Cobb? I ask because I am searching on Roommate finder and think I will probably want to room with someone not in Honors. But could I still use my Honors housing application to say I want to be in Cobb with my roommate? I’m not sure how that would work… Thanks!

I wish but no. The only way a freshman is going to get into Cobb next year is if they sign up for random Honors roommate assignments. Too many upper classman decided to stay inn Cobb next year so there aren’t many rooms left.

Getting Cobb throught a regular application isn’t likely. In fact, even if you do honors housing you may not get Cobb anyway. The gamble is yours.
