Aw, too bad… but thanks for telling me. Do I get any larger chance at all of getting a quieter dorm? I dislike the way the dorm selections are set up, seeing as I’d rather get Koury, Craige North, Horton, or Hardin, and they’re all paired up with other dorms I’d rather not be in.

Connected learning is another way you can get in. I don’t meant to discourage you all, haha. Don’t worry there are plenty of quiet dorms on campus. North campus dorms tend to be quieter and closer to classes because they have more upperclassmen in them. You might try listing north campus dorms in your top three.

Some freshman do end up on North or Mid, so no worries.

What about di and phi?

Hi I’m an admitted student… what is the best freshman housing at UNC (ie which dorms are the “good” dorms by reputation) and where should I avoid?
Whats the dl on substance free housing and what about requesting an honors roommate?
ALSO: Did you buy your laptop through the University? Why or why should I not consider this?
Thanks.

If you request an honors roommate they will do all they can to make that happen; I have never heard of a case where it didn’t.

There is a whole thread that addresses the laptops but essentially if you got a laptop grant use it. You’ll have 4 yrs worth of insurance and a loaner if yours is ever in for service.

I’ll let others address your other two questions about housing.

I know that there’s a laptop thread but it seems it isn’t as popular as this one…it’s a realy quick question…the website says 9 out of 10 use cci laptops. For the price(i have no grant, pretty sure international students don’t get one) i could get a cheaper one and hope it’s gonna be fine for 4 years… but my real question: is it really 9 out of 10?

Gkgkgozldaht,

While its true that the majority of people do have CCI laptops, I’d say it more like 7-8 out of 10. I think it has a lot to do with the convenience factor. They are already set up on the network and if they break, you can get them repaired on campus.

I have a CCI laptop, and when it malfunctioned earlier this semester I was able to take it to ITS (tech services) and get it repaired for free. While my laptop was being repaired, I was given a loaner to use, which was also free. I know several people who have non-CCI laptops that have been damaged, forcing them to pay out-of-pocket for either costly repairs or a whole new computer.

I have a question as well: I, unfortunately, did not receive a laptop grant for whatever reason. I already have a fairly new laptop, so I was fine with not receiving the grant. However, since most have a CCI laptop, should I get one? I would probably just use that one for school and use my current one for personal reasons.

If your laptop meets these requirements, then you can use it and don’t have to get a CCI or new laptop if you don’t want to.

so I received the CCI grant…that means I can only buy the R Series laptop w/ only the insurance for free right?

Do you have a warranty with your current laptop? If yours is fairly new, I would recommend keeping it and saving your family $2k or so…the CCI laptops are just like any other ones out there; their only benefit is the complementary ITS service that the university provides. Just be sure to take care of your laptop and keep it away from liquids-I have seen far too many computers (my own included) destroyed by a foul cup or open container.

Do professors at UNC post there syllabus’ online?

Innovative - my son also received the grant. If you go to the site for the laptop, it will tell you what it includes. You can upgrade but you have to cover the cost of the upgrade. We didnt upgrade, but we purchased a few items as well like a printer etc and had out of pocket expense of about 150 dollars

Yes. Every course I have taken thus far at UNC has had a syllabus available online.

They’re available online, but usually they’re on Blackboard, so you can only see them with a login & password.

If anyone wants any example syllabi, I can email a couple to you that are saved on my computer. Just PM me with your address :)

I have a sample syllabus for MATH 381 and PHIL 155, but I was wondering if anyone had taken either or could tell me anything about them.

I wanted to know what place do you recommend to take your new roommate out to eat, thats a staple of Chapel Hill and is cheap but still delicious

Thanks guys

Cosmic Cantina. Bski’s.
