Ask A Current Freshman

substance free dorms:

basically the only difference is that you can drink alchohol, or be intoxicated, in the dorm even if you are 21

Thanks, UNCgal. Also, is it absolutely necessary to take the SAT math subject test? Will I be fine if I take AP Statistics? I am taking the exam, and I am sure I will get at least a 3.

“AP Statistics exam – if you scored a 3, you will get credit for Statistics (STOR) 151. If you scored a 4 or higher, you will get credit for Statistics (STOR) 155. Note: Credit for STOR 151 or 155 does not give you Math 110 placement.”

You need to take the SAT math subject test unless you have AP Calculus scores, as far as I know.

So close on the AP Stats score…

Sadly, I scored a 2. Hahaha

Well, I’m going to take the SAT Math II in June, but I probably won’t get the scores back by the time I go to CTOPS… Is that a big deal? I’d really rather not have to wait until a later STOPS session.

To piggy back from the bedding discussion… are we allowed to bring our own twin-sized mattress? And maybe put the original mattress along the wall or something?
My dad is really bent on buying a mattress for me to take.

That seems super duper unnecessary. Just get those egg crates. My bed was really comfortable. Freshman (every freshman) already bring way too much when they first move in, adding a mattress to the mix would be pretty stressful.

hahaha… cloying, I eat stress for dinner! LOL! I’ll let him know this… I was just wondering if there was a rule against bringing mattresses, because that would be the best way to deter his insanity.

just buy a nice foam mattress pad…also you’d have to get an extra-long twin mattress to fit the bed frame, and i’d assume they pretty much only sell those in bulk to colleges and stuff…

How is Graduate School placement to top schools in math/physics/chemistry?

I have heard Cobb is really nice, but would it be worth it to try and get into the honors dorms rather than staying on south campus freshman year? My brother who is a senior at UNC now says that even if Cobb is one of the best dorms on campus, it’s not worth it to give up south campus. I’m just trying to get some different opinions on this.

i agree wholeheartedly with this! south campus is THE first-year experience.

also there aren’t any “honors dorms” at carolina…

I’m sorry I didn’t mean that, he told me it was predominantly an upperclassmen dorm. I had the impression that if you did a living-learning community then that is where you are placed? Or is it not set in stone? I’m pretty sure that I would go for a south-campus dorm anyways though.

if you do connected learning (basically year-long projects you apply to work on with the people on your hall), you’ll be located in cobb.

living-learning communities, like the language houses, substance free, sustainability, etc. are in other dorms.

seriously, south campus is awesome–i feel pretty bad for the first-years on my hall in grimes (upper quad) because this dorm isn’t exactly social. luckily i already had friends form last year so that doesn’t bother me much, but i feel bad that they don’t get that amazing “welcome to carolina!” social experience that you’ll get in ehaus, hojo or craige.

as of right now, i have 2 potential roommates…one that wants south campus and one that wants granville.
i’m leaning toward the latter. so…what’s your opinion on granville? is it a bad idea for an OOS student who knows that she wants to rush?

Granville is perfect for anyone who wants to rush. The RAs are laid back, there is always something going on, and the Agora beats out any on-campus dining facility. Also, the location and parking spots are hard to beat too.

really i heard it can be kind of cliquey. and that it doesnt give oos the typical freshmen experience." btw i’m also debating between south and granville

I’d have to disagree with that strongly. Granville IS the typical freshman experience-dorm room pregaming/parties, just steps from frat court, with people that are like yourself. It gets cliquey, but everyone finds their niche after the first few weeks.

Does anyone know when they will notify students who have applied to the living learning community, is it on a rolling basis or as soon as they receive it and make a decision they notify you

Thanks

Is this worth going to for an oss freshman?

Are these classes for a grade or pass/fail?

Also I was looking at a syllabus and I saw that some of the courses involved exams, now this may be a stupid question but this is not just a workout course where you just basically go to class and workout, are there actual assignments
