Hello all! I wanted to offer those who may be interested the opportunity to ask a current Howard student questions. I am a sophomore, rising junior sociology major and political science minor. If you have any questions or issues with Howard, please post here and I will do my best to address them. This would also be a great way for the incoming class to exchange information. Good luck and welcome to the Bison family! HU, YOU KNOW! :)

HI!!! :)

I have a couple of questions:

How is the social life @ HU? Are the people there generally friendly?

Dating Scene @ HU??!

Does Howard have a large Muslim student population? How active is the African student association club?

Food & Dorms?

How strong is HU Political Science program?

WHY howard??! my second choice is possibly UMD-CP, GWU and a couple of others…

I think it’s an experience I’m definitely interested in…

I plan on visiting NEXT WEEKEND =D(self-guided though unless if i want to wait until June…) next week with my cousin who’s a Howard alumni (:…so excited :]'

I’m most likely going to be a transfer for fall 2012 (inshallah).

I know these are a lot of questions to ask (sorry)…but hopefully someone else was probably thinking of the same ones haha…

Oh the dorms…it depends on where you stay honestly. Freshman year as a female you will be in one of four places (only two are really likely though). I’ll list them in order of desirability solely based on amenities.

1) Bethune Annex-There is A/C fin every suite. The arrangements are suite-style. You will most likely be in a double (you and a roommate) with another double and maybe a single in your suite). Each room has it’s own doors and then there is common suite space and a shared bathroom. Additionally, the Annex has a fitness area and its own cafeteria (no other dorm has that). You can live here all four years at Howard.

2) Cook Hall-The chance of you getting into Cook Hall are ridiculously slim. It is co-ed dorm comprised mostly of athletes and scholarship kids. It has doubles and singles, and a nice lounge area. The rooms are nicer than most other dorms and a bit more spacious. You can live here all four years as well, but the likelihood is not good.

3) Meridian Hall- This is an off-campus dorm, but since Howard has been admitting too many freshman, some are ending up here. Most rooms are singles, which is nice, and I believe there is A/C. They have their own little mini-store, as does the Annex, which I forgot to mention. You probably won’t be here, but you could technically stay here all four years. Most people move out from Meridian after sophomore year though.

4)Tubman Quad-most freshman girls live here. There are doubles and triples and only the triples have A/C. You have communal bathrooms, so think 40 girls to a bathroom. There are rodents at times, but apparently you rally get the “Freshman bonding experience.” My sanitary qualms are worth more than that to me. Lol. It’s only for freshman though.

I personally lived in a double-double suite in the Annex freshman year, so four girls shared a bathroom and I had one roommate. Now I live in the dorm for honors students, which is the Howard Plaza Towers East

How strong is HU Political Science program?

And Fall 2012 is right after I leave. But good luck in your academic endeavors! And wherever you end up, just do your best.

hahaha thank you soo much for the post. It was super helpful & informative. Now i definitely feel a lot more comfortable about having Howard as my #1 choice :)

Oh, and again :P… how’s the dating scene @ HU?!

How are the parties?

and that sucks! you leave after I [if] transfer… :[

and i’ll pm you my email address! I deactivated my fb a this week so i could get less distracted :). But i’ll link you to both anyway.

I’ll definitely let you know when i’m on campus!! :]

Oh yes, I forgot…the dating scene.

I snatched one off the market pretty quickly…ie. October of freshman year and it’s worked out well. But overall, most women here are single because of the ration (70% female, 30% male), and there is a sizeable gay male population so that narrows the already small pool.

Parties are wild…fun…lots of people make stupid choices though. Don’t go alone, don’t get too drunk, and don’t wander off. DC isn’t a HUGE city but the crime rates are ridiculous. So it’s never safe to be “that drunk college girl” because people (other students included) will take advantage of that.

I’ll add you :)

hhahaha i just accepted it! and WOAH small world…we have a mutual friend…she’s a my cousin that goes to Princeton :P…i’ll probably see her on memorial day @ her bro’s graduation party in FL (he got into yale hahaha).

Lol i have to go get ready for school but i’ll be back with hopefully more qs :)

and thank you again for answering my questions :] i really appreciate it.

Update: I’m not gonna be @ HU next weekend I just got off of the phone w/ my cousin and she’s headed up to NC for mother’s day :(…& the week after won’t work because she has guests/company & work(PLUS i have to go to FL.)…and the first week of June i have SATs to take…so that leaves the weekend of the 12th open right after the day school gets out yay! and hopefully there will be tour guides + amazing weather :)

I guess i’m gonna have to contain the excitement until then… :P

Again, I’ll let you know when If I’m on campus! :]

Alright, please do. :)

I’ll be here all summer, so definitely let me know.

PLEASE check your mailbox, por favor. :)

Haha, so I’ve got some competiton! j/k

So far I’ve been hearing amazing things about HU.

Except for HU’s administration…I’m not a very passive person…so should I be worried about this?

Although HU may not be diverse racially, it is still diverse, right?

Do u mind if you could elaborate a bit on how HU is a bit cliquish? I hope it wount be a repeat of HS. :P

Thanks :]

If you’re not passive, you should be fine. If you’re not at all aggressive, then you’ll have some issues. You just have to make sure you don’t get screwed, no one is watching out for you.

It is extremely diverse. Just like you meet people from all over the country, you meet people from all over the world with so many experiences and backgrounds. It is truly amazing.

That being said, people have a tendency to get cliquish around the organizations they are in or teams they are on. It isn’t extreme, but it happens to a degree.

And yes, the competition is ridiculous. Lol

hello…thanks for starting this thread.

So im already in college and Ive been trying to transfer to Howard…sigh.

The administration is well…needs alot of work and is very short staffed. The main thing that is holding me back is the money. I have a 3.8 GPA and expected Howard to give me at least the transfer student scholarship, which covers full tuition and fees. But I’m still waiting to see how much they will give me, which sucks because I have to respond to the other schools that have accepted me as well as gave me money very soon.

And then the possibility of me staying on campus seems slim. There seems to a shortage of dorms. How are those towers dorms??..I heard that there is a lot of crime over there. I live in DC so I know Georgia Ave can be rough.

Also I’m a vegetarian too… soo are there any vegetarian options in the caf. Im tryna go back to being a vegan but I do now that there are places off campus but I just want to kno if there were any on campus.

thanks :)

Hi, I was wondering: What is the percentage of the different ethnic backgrounds at HU? Because I went to a college fair a few weeks ago, and I saw their booth there, and I knew that I had heard they have the program I want (Music Technology) and I went to take a look. When my dad saw, he jokingly said that I wasn’t the right color. (I am white, btw.) Is there really that much of a larger black population than white? Thanks

LOL. i’m not vegetarian, but I’m Muslim…but Ican’t eat pork, or anything that contains alcohol…

Does Howard have a cafeteria that serves Halal or Kosher food?

@itallends2012: oops…i think i meant i was passive.not very agressive…but if that comes up…i think i could switch that around :P

I received an email today that I sent last month in regards to a transfer scholarship. They told me basically it doesnt matter if you eligible everyone is not required to get one.

Hi! I am thinking about attending Howard (praying for the BS/MD program), but I was just wondering how the pre-med program is? and how would you compare it to VCU?
- Thanks!

Hi itallends2012 or whomever has information,

I’m curious to know where I stand with being accepted to Howard as a transfer student from a New Jersey community college.

I will be applying to Howard for the Spring 2011 semester. I will have over 30 credit hours from my community college. My major is Accounting and I eventually plan on applying to the School of Business.

Although I have heard statements about transferring credits from another institution I’m hoping I won’t have any issues. I have taken mostly GE’s because they are usually similar amongst all schools.

I currently have a 3.8 GPA which I plan on bringing up in the semsters (summer and fall) prior to Spring '11 and I am an active member of Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society. I’m a 24 yr. old living on my own so I have to work full-time during the day which doesn’t allow me much time to volunteer at my current school. I will be attending Howard full-time if I’m accepted.

Thanks in advance for the information!

Hello, Im an entering Freshman for fall 2010 and I just received a letter saying they reach maximum capacity for on-campus housing. Im so afraid that I will be isolated from the college life, and I will lose out on the whole experience. Also, Im not familiar with the area and a little scared of living on my own so quick in a strange place. The letter says it will reopen housing if cancellations occur do you think any will occur. Im nervous wreck about not living on campus is there any suggestion you have about living off campus. Also, my uncle’s friend is from DC and says that it has alot of crime Im afraid i may be unable to attend in the fall because i can not afford off campus housing and the shortage of time alotted to find off campus housing.

Is it hard getting into Howard??

Re: Housing

Rooms do open up. If I recall, Freshmen do get priority placement. I would suggest call them at least once a week. If you are the honors program, your housing is guarenteed.

Re: Is it hard to get into Howard

Depends on what your stats are.
