Ask a current Northeastern student!

Thank you for the information! does anybody have a link with pictures of the typical ymca rooms? I can’t seem to find any. And is it the same with security where you need to show a card to get in?

It functions just like any other dorm; there’s a proctor who swipes your card for you to get in. I think there’s no mail room in the building, though. You have to go a a dorm across the street to get your mail.

Thanks! Do you know if foreign language is the only subject I’d have to take a placement exam in? I am not taking a foreign language so does that mean I don’t need to take any placement exams?

I believe that’s the only subject with placement exams. Other classes you can place out of with AP/IB credit, but there aren’t NEU tests. Everything else is determined by your major (ie, which version of physics, calculus, etc. you take).

Does anyone know when Honors Welcome Week begins? I’m trying to schedule the dates for my internship this summer and I need to decide when to end. Also about the language placement tests, what is the formatting of the test? Is there multiple choice, writing, reading, listening, speaking, what? Thanks for any help.

What kind of parties do the average freshman go to? I’m a really short asian and I feel kind of miniature next to most people so I’m kind of shy. I’ve never partied much in hs, but I’m definitely into the classic college partying.

How is the job outlook on the PharmD program?

If I apply my AP and college credits to accelerate the Pharmd program into a 5 year, do you think I could also do honors?

What is Boston like for the under 21s?

Are people entitled as they say?

And finally, a shallow question. How attractive are the boysss?

@percheno -
Honors welcome week generally starts on a Thursday. That’s the day you move in and there’s an ice cream social that evening. Since classes start September 4 this year, I’m going to guess that would be August 29.
The online placement tests are all multiple choice. I’m not sure about the in-person ones for languages that don’t have online tests.

@skibear -
I’m not a partier, but I can tell you what I do know. There are parties, but you’ll probably want to go with other people to play it safe and make it less awkward. I know the first weekend after move-in people were going to try to get into parties at BU frats, MIT (with its “work hard, party hard” reputation), etc. No idea if they succeeded. Most parties of NU students are on Mission Hill or at houses/apartments in the vicinity of campus. Get involved in clubs and make friends with people in clubs who want to party. For under 21s, there are some clubs, but that’s really not my scene.

Can you actually reduce the PharmD to 5 years? I don’t know it that’s allowed, or how strict the program is. Have you checked with an advisor on that? If it is, the main issue I would see is getting in the necessary number of honors courses, especially if your APs are cutting into your intro classes where the honors sections are normally offered. The other thing to keep in mind is that PharmD is a tough major in general. I know of some people who struggled trying to keep up with the honors requirements (in terms of classes and GPA) in that major, but others who were totally fine. The issue to keep in mind is how much stress and commitment to schoolwork you’re going to have if you do honors AND PharmD AND condense it. You probably shouldn’t expect any easy semesters. And if you plan to party a lot, that could be a potential interference.
I think the boys are fine. I mean, my boyfriend is a fellow Northeasterner (and yes, he’s also on CC, so I should be careful what I say… :slight_smile:
I’m really not sure what you mean by the “entitled” part?

@nanotechnology I’ve been following you for a little while here on CC. I am actually a BNS Major too transferring to NEU this summer and I was wondering how you set up your own co-op at the Max Planck Institute? I also plan on learning German so this is why i ask.

Mostly I got that position because of connections, and doing really well on my first co-op. I worked in an on campus lab for my first co-op, where I had been doing research for awhile. I made a really good impression. I told her I was interested in doing a co-op in Germany and she knew that I speak German. Because so much research is international and she is native German, she had connections so she was able to set up an interview with a professor she knew at the Max Planck Institute in Tübingen. It wasn’t an established co-op, so there has been some hassle with that, but it’s definitely worth it.
So basically the lesson is: get involved and prove yourself. With 2 co-ops, I have yet to have a cold interview for a position. This isn’t AT ALL the norm, but it’s a lot because of getting engaged with research early on.

what is the greek life like at NEU?

I’m not involved in Greek life, and it’s not HUGE like at some schools. But the people I’ve known in sororities have loved it and have formed great bonds with their sisters.

I’ll see if someone else with more first hand knowledge can answer better though…

Does anybody know when housing assignments come out? And students have a say on where to live?

The most say you have in where you live comes from choosing your LLC. Unless you’re in Honors, you don’t know what building you’re going to be in until you get the assignment.

As for the timing, I just looked back at my email, and I got an email June 16 before my freshman year saying my room assignment was posted on myNEU, so I’d expect sometime mid-June.

Trying to make airline arrangements for Late June Orientation , seems the orientation site on the admissions server is down, its either June 24/25 or 25/26 , any help appreciated.

not sure because i have different date options than you do but…my options are all on Monday and Tuesday…so whichever orientation date you listed is on monday-tuesday id bet is the actual date

@Nanotechnology Congrats on being awarded the Goldwater Scholarship!

Trying to snag cheap airline tickets, if school starts on the 4th, typically how far in advance do the dorms open to move in? Specifically International Village. Thanks.

If you’re in Honors, you generally move in the Thursday before. If it’s not Honors, the date varies depending on the building.

Thank you. Thank you.

Hi everyone. I just got accepted as a transfer student and I was wondering which housing is the best? I’m an international relations major
