Ask a current Scripps freshman!

Hi all,

I know decisions for the Scripps Class of 2022 came out recently. If anyone has any questions about anything at all, I’m available as a resource! I’m a current freshman at Scripps and would love to answer any questions that anyone has

Hi! Just admitted recently  I was wondering if Scripps has a cap on the classes you can take at the other Claremonts?

Nope! The nice thing about the Claremont consortium is the ability to cross register. While obviously you still have to take CORE and writing 050 (two required freshmen classes) at Scripps, I know a few people this semester who are taking the remainder of their classes at the other 5Cs. Sometime it’s a little harder to get into classes at the other 5Cs if professors prioritize people from their college, but it can generally be achieved by just talking to the professor. Lots of people major at another 5C and take pretty much everything at that school! Hope that helps

@adaserk – Thanks for offering to answer questions and glad you’re enjoying your first year! Can you give a sense of how many international students attend Scripps? Wondering how global the college seems. It’s a great school and my daughter is very interested!!

@AlmostThere2018 - According to this page they are 5% international.

(And yes! It’s a great school, my D just graduated last year and loved her time there)

Hi! Can you please explain the proceas about getting credit for AP classes? It’s not very clear on the website

@AlmostThere2018 Yes, about 5% international but I know that we have a good number of international students for the class of 2021. There are also quite a few at the other 5Cs which is nice.

@pandyab2 Yeah, it’s a bit confusing and they are rather unclear about it. Essentially, you send them your AP scores and they then include up to a certain number of them on your transcript as elective credit -I believe it’s 4? You have to get a
4 or a 5 for them to do anything with your AP scores. Unfortunately, you are unable to use them to pass out of any intro classes -one part of Scripps that I find frustrating. Scripps does not believe that AP credits are really equivalent to the intro level courses so they will not allow you to pass out of any intro classes with them. I’m not sure if that completely answers your question because I am honestly not 100% sure on some of the AP stuff myself but I know the website really isn’t helpful at all. For more specific questions I would recommend trying to email the registrar!

woah 5% international?! Do you know how big the class size is this year/ how many students from china?

My daughter is freshman at Scripps too! She really loves it there! Great school, many resources and opportunities!

@adaserk - thank you! My D is flying out next month to check it all out again and overnight. When we visited in Feb. we saw a lot of happy looking students - something I can’t say about some of the colleges we visited.

@adaserk - The other thing that seems daunting: the required general ed courses. Sure seems like there are a lot of them, more than most colleges. Do you know, for an Environment, Economics and Politics major for example (which she would go in as), does this leave any slots open for exploring? She’ll come in with the max. number of AP credits, whatever that does for her!

@ClaremontMom - has your daughter found it easy to get her career going? Was being a Scripps grad a benefit out in the real world?

@wcoastmomof2 - Actually yes. She got an excellent job offer at a software company and absolutely loves it there. She’s very fortunate to have a job she loves, people she enjoys working with, close to home (so she can save money living at home), and makes an excellent salary. It is a firm that knows the Claremont schools and the quality of students really well and recruits and hires from there regularly.

That said, I know she has friends that fill the spectrum. Some have started their careers or got into some great grad schools, while others are working “normal” jobs while still looking to start that career.

Would someone post the revisit day for admitted students? Thanks so much!

@wcoastmomof2 there are definitely opportunities to explore while still doing a major like that. The nice thing is that you can double count some of the GEs and some of the required classes for that major are likely to fit in with the GEs. It looks like a lot but once you start to take classes, you will find that it really isn’t that bad. Also, it depends on how many classes you take a semester. The normal class load is 4 classes but a lot of people will take 5 a semester which allows a lot more room for exploring! I’m taking 5 this semester and it’s definitely doable.

Good news for a lot of people! The admissions statistics were just released and Scripps admitted way less people this year: 252 people so only 9% of applicants! From the looks of it, they will be drawing very heavily from the wait list. So don’t give up hope if you were wait listed and for those of you who did get in, that’s a huge achievement  http://www.scrippscollege.edu/news/class-of-2018

@adaserk holy cow! did it drop from last year? This years group looks really cool

Actually,- they probably accepted around 850 or so for the 252 target enrollment. So I’d guess the accepance rate was around 30%, maybe a little less, based on last year’s numbers. Last year they accpected 950 but led them to a higher than expected class of 2021 (over 300) so this year I think they are expecting higher yield and may have ratcheted down acceptances, knowing that they can pull from WL. Still, congrats to all!

@adserk – do you have a link to gen ed requirements for Scripps? I find the website a bit difficult to penetrate! Tks!

@adserk – Is Core I, Core II, etc. one course per semester or more than that? I know it’s integrated so I wasn’t sure if it’s more than one class. Tks again for your help and insights!
