Open to all questions, I'm a sophomore in the College of Business, as a Finance and Accounting double major!

I have a question for you…did you come into Illinois with any AP credits? How many hours of classes did you take each semester so far? First semester, second semester freshman year and sophomore year. How many hours will you need to graduate with your double major?
Thanks!

Yeah, I actually came in with a lot of AP credits, so I was considered a sophomore in terms of credit hours already. I think I had around 8 AP classes done, so that translates into a bunch of credits, including a bunch of gen eds. I took 15 first semester, and 16 the rest of the semesters. I might take 17 or 18 next semester. And in terms of the hours for the double major, it’s all in this little handout, I seem to have lost it but I should graduate in 4 years, as accountancy does not have too many requirements

Thanks. Another question…do you belong to a Business fraternity? Are you involved in any business related clubs at school? How has your overall experience at UIUC been both academically and socially? If any of these questions are too personal that is fine…

I am not interested in greek life at all. Will I reaaly feel that distanced from the rest of my peers?

Also, can you comment on the difficulty of the engineering courses? CS specifically if possible

Sent from my Liberty using CC App

Cool! I’m going for the same majors. Has it been unreasonably difficult so far? How is the business Calc different from regular Calc?

Gotta; No I do not but I probably will join one next year. I am involved in Finance club, and a couple other clubs, there lot’s of business organization’s here, I’ve just been lazy and need to join more. And it’s been a blast. Classes are pretty challenging and the workload is pretty tough but it’s interesting. Most of my professors are fairly interesting. Be prepared to be in a couple huge lectures your freshman year.

Shazeline; I only took CS 105 for my business core requirment, so i can’t really comment on that. But greek like is very prevalent here, but it’s not dominating. It depends who you associate with, as there as so many different kinds of people and organizations, clubs etc. Don’t worry about it.

Little; Not too bad, my accounting classes are decent, and finance is very interesting. The economics core required classes are a bit tough, like Econ 302 and 203/202. But it’s not too bad so far. And I had passed out of calc through AP Calc AB, so I only took linear algebra freshman year and I was done with math, so far.

thanks. i have another one for you!

if you or anybody you knew had a full IB diploma upon their entry to UIUC, how did easily did their credits transfer. Also, would you recommend placing out of core classes like calculus and bio (assuming you have the proper AP/IB credit)?

I’m going to do Economics, and it looks like I can convert my high school credentials to credits for Econ 102 and Econ 103. Should I do this or take these classes to inflate my GPA?

Junior in CS here at UIUC. Some of the 2xx classes require a lot of time (241, 242), but I wouldn’t say they’re too difficult. 373 and a lot of the 4xx classes are very, very difficult… I have friends that almost literally live at Siebel. However, I know a guy taking 6 CS classes, four at the 400 level… it’s possible to do well, you just have to manage your time well.

Idk, I know I placed out of a bunch of social science and history gen eds, they could be GPA boosters, but in reality, kinda a waste of money. I mean if you get good grades and can possibly graduate early, that saves alot of money. Then again, some of the gen ed’s could boost GPA. It’s a personal choice.

Do a lot of students bring laptops to class? How is 6pack? How are the weekends at uiuc?

Yeah, i’d say a bunch. I still prefer notes and a pen but…

6 pack is fun, I live in an apartment now, but its a fun place to live. All of the dorms are pretty “bad”, but 6 pack has a nice environment to it, and is pretty loud/social.

Weekends are what you make it out to be. There alot of parties, joining a frat could open a world of partying up to you, but it depends what you want to do. Alot of people go to bars, which are 19 to enter here, so theres always something to do

Bumping this thread for any nervous parents or students getting ready for college  feel free to ask anything.

What’s been your favorite class so far, and what gen ed classes do you suggest taking? Kind of subjective, but was just wondering what your opinion was. :)

What if anything do you know about Newman Hall? Do they party?

My daughter got into LAS psych and is already thinking about marketing and transferring into the b school. I told her to wait and see until she goes through her first year. She is concerned about getting a job, etc, but I told her to hang out until she can get her feet wet, so to speak. I have heard it is difficult to transfer schools , is this true?

Madness; Hmm my favorite class so far has probably been Psych 100, which is a general ed. Interesting discussions and topics although a bit standardized. I’ve taken psych 100, english 264, geology 100 for gen eds because i had done alot of AP classes. I reccomend psych and english, GEO 100 is a pretty hard class.

ILLIGON; Newman Hall is located right next to CRCE, which is a gym. Good location, as it is close to the quad, but never been inside of Newman. I’m sure there are lots of party students in any dorm so don’t worry.

zini2001; Yeah i’ve heard transferring into the business school is pretty tough, but she should def. get involved in some ec’s and get good grades. I think i’ve heard about 50% of transfers are accepted? So the key for your daughter is too get good grades and show some effort in terms of extracurriculars and she should be okay!

Bartnawer, you need to get your facts straight.Newman Hall is located no where near CRCE. Its like 5-6 blocks away. Its actually closer to the ARC than CRCE. Also there is much less “party” people at Newman compared to other dorms.
