Ask a Current Student

@kennedya9

I realized my post may not have come off as intended and it’s too late to edit.

(confession: as a parent looking at the “bill” - I secretly wonder the same - but my mother taught me - back in ‘the day’ - that you go to college for the education opportunities it will present. To learn how to solve problems and synthesize information.

So far Chapman seems to fit the bill. But my child is admitted into Dodge which is small and very hands-on. So that might be different than your circumstances.

Good luck with whatever you choose. And - remember - that college will be lucky to have you.

Hi Smother,
My D is a current freshman screenwriting major who lives in North Morlan. When she went through housing last year, she got an email that they were going to try something new with the film students and have them housed together in NoMo and in Glass. There is no official Greek housing (although some do choose to live together after their freshman year…but that is a choice and not official). One of my D’s suitemates is Greek and while she loves it, she will not be living with anyone from her sorority next year.
D absolutely loves Chapman, Dodge, and living in NoMo! Touring the dorms is very helpful for students to envision themselves living there, but it’s important for them to be open-minded and not get set on any particular dorm. When we took the dorm tour during Preview Day last spring, NoMo was not at the top of D’s list. NoMo is older, the rooms open to the real world rather than an enclosed hallway, and the tour guide said that NoMo tended to be the most social dorm with residents leaving their doors open a lot of the time. D is an introvert and found the idea of this daunting. However, she has found that NoMo suits her perfectly, and she is happy that she is living there rather than in the dorms she preferred during the tours.
D also wondered if living with all film students would narrow her experiences too much, especially since she had already heard that the nature of the film program tends to keep film students together. But she found that it really helped in the collaborative nature of the film projects, especially since D is a writer and has never filmed before. If she needs help with sound equipment she can go right next door and if she needs a talented voice actor to speak for the vegetables in her movie (yes, that really happened), she can just go a couple doors down. From what she tells us, it seems like creativity is just bursting on that floor! She is excited and stimulated by the people she meets, and she adores her digital arts roommate. Within a couple of months of starting school, she was the lead actress in her suitemate’s final movie (My daughter the introvert! Proud parental jaw drop!) as well as doing editing, filming, writing, props, and casting. She is thrilled. We are thrilled.

That sounds amazing! My daughter is into theater and writing stories as well, so the chance to do all of those things would really appeal to her. I will show her this post.

^^LOL, kinlo!
Our son is also a freshman in NoMo and it’s been a fantastic year. He has a great roomie, the NoMo and Dodge kids collaborate on everything under the sun, and even as a DA major, he’s been lead actor in three short films, done voice-overs, edited films, etc.

The energy, creativity, and camaraderie is just wonderful there.

My D announced at dinner last night that she’s choosing to attend Chapman in the Fall! Dodge Film Studies major. Which makes it even more exciting to go to Preview day in a couple weeks!

My S is a Dodge student (broadcast) and he lives in Pralle. He is really happy there. The dorm is a good mix, kids with all different majors, including two guys with whom he will be getting an apartment for next year (and neither of them is a Dodge student).

Does anyone know much about the Chapman Honors program - your experience, or selectivity?

Hi Bluestone,

Here are previous threads regarding the Chapman Honors program that might be of help to you:

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone had any information on Chapman’s dance program. I’ve been accepted but am still trying to learn everything I can about it before making my final decision!

Thank you

Hi Court272,

I just did a search and found these links that may be helpful to you in regards to Chapman U’s Dance Department. Hopefully you can visit Chapman’s Dance Department and talk to the teachers & students there before making your decision.

What has been your experience in the dorms? I’m definitely a “home-body” and I’m so nervous about living on campus. Are we able to pick our roomates?

Also what do you think of my chances?
GPA: 3.89, 4.005
SAT: 1720
I think my ecs are pretty good and show that im involved in my community. i will work really hard on my essays as well.

last thing haha, are there parties/drinking on campus? or no because of the christian aspect?

Court: The dance program is absolutely excellent. Some of my good friends are in the program and they are, to a one, bafflingly talented. It’s not easy to get in, by my understanding, so hat tip to you for that. Of the faculty I’ve had a chance to meet, they’re very knowledgeable and capable, although I must confess to being an abysmal dancer and thus having limited experience dealing with those professors.

gclauds: Yes. You’re given a chance to pref roommates when filling out the on-campus housing survey. As I’ve mentioned before, Facebook is a helpful tool when getting to know people before meeting them face-to-face. I met both of my roommates that way.

Your numbers look fine. SAT might be a bit low but I’m no adcom. If you think your application looks good, you’ve done all you can.

Last thing: “On campus”, not so much, because the Orange municipal PD and Public Safety crack down pretty hard on parties-- and because students living on campus are almost exclusively underclassmen and thus below the drinking age. But house parties are very much a thing. There is no “Christian aspect” to Chapman. It’s nominally a Disciples of Christ school, but apart from the Interfaith Center on campus-- which, to my knowledge, hosts more Hillel events than anything else-- there isn’t a hint of religious obtrusion.

Hope this helps!

Strangebro, Thanks for all this great information! Do you happen to know if university dining dollars are accepted at any of the restaurants/shops in town?(old town orange or anywhere else?) I can’t find that info online…

Hi Vvsitalia,

“Panther Bucks can’t be used instead of declining balance accounts because when students pay for Panther Bucks, that money goes directly back to Sodexo and Chapman. He said if students were to use Panther Bucks off campus, Sodexo would have to raise meal plan prices to compensate for the lost revenue.”

Strange,
Freshman year is flying by! You guys are in the home stretch. Picked out your outfit for the undie run yet?

Hi, I am accepted with the accounting major, and i instantly fall in love with the campus with i visit it. It is super nice. As for question, I would love to know more about how is the recruitment doing in Chapman. Do most accounting students get internships and jobs, and how well do the department prepare students for the career?

Thanks

GZ,

Can’t say I know, I’m afraid. I’ve never heard of accounting being a big-ticket major here, but if it’s affiliated with Argyros College I’ve no doubt it’s good.

vvsitalia,

Sukahjoy is correct, in that that’s not an option right now, but a few local businesses are petitioning President Doti for a partnership, to make declining balances (basically rechargeable PantherBucks) a valid form of payment. Our current caterer, Sodexo, has their contract expire at the end of this year, and they’ve been blocking this move in the past, so if they get the axe that could be possible. Stay tuned.

shakesfan,
Haha, flying by indeed. As for Undie Run, haven’t started thinking that far in advance yet, though I’ll probably throw on a tie just to accessorize. Must (un)dress to impress, after all! ;)

Hi–I haven’t chimed in on the Chapman forum in awhile! I absolutely cannot believe it is one month until school is out. For those of you considering Chapman and still making your final decision, all I can say is that my S is having a terrific experience on all levels. The professors and classes are excellent.

Does anyone know how the Biochemistry dept is there? My daughter is still trying to decide where to go.

Dropping in to say hi! Like momsings, I, too, haven’t chimed in on the Chapman forum in awhile. It’s hard to believe that DS has one month left of junior year and looking forward to be a senior next year. It’s been an amazing 3 years at Chapman for sure!! Hope all is well with the Chapman parents and students. Sounds like you guys are doing great!

andi, from what I hear about Chapman’s Biochemistry is excellent! I believe the new Chapman U’s School of Pharmacy is scheduled to open in 2015. That’s a good thing. It would be Orange County’s first pharmacy school. I would say that would be the place to be. Good luck in your decision making!
