One of the newer dorms has pool tables in it. Freedom Hall I think. Aside from that students usually gather to hang out on the lawn, in the Leavey Center, or some place off campus.
@guTA Not a prospective student, but out of curiosity, what is this I keep hearing about “selective clubs?” Usually most clubs that I have had experience with are always looking to recruit more people rather than turn people away, with some exceptions of course with audition related clubs (ex: Mock Trial, dance groups, plays)
@guTA
What is there to do in the Leavey Center?
@SafeFromScience Can you expand a bit more on tennis at Georgetown? I’m interested in playing club or intramural tennis. I know club can get really competitive and I might not make it, but intramural is fine too. Is intramural open to all and an active intramural sport?
There are a handful of clubs that for various reasons have to limit the number of people participating as they do a particular service for the university and require a large commitment. The most selective ones I know of are the Corp, Blue and Grey, the Lecture Fund, and the Credit Union. The Corp is actually a student run business that runs a few coffee shops and snack shacks on campus, so if you are accepted into it you will receive a wage, so obviously they can’t hand those out to everybody. I don’t know how Blue and Grey got as popular as it did, but the tour guiding requires a good deal of commitment and training. The Lecture Fund has a small selective group of core members whose responsibilities are to get esteemed speakers to campus. This position requires a heavy deal of responsibility and in return members get to meet a bunch of famous people. The Credit Union I’m pretty sure operates similarly to the Corp.
Though Georgetown has a reputation for selective clubs, the majority of clubs are always looking for new members. The ones that are selective usually just want to make sure the people involved are responsible and the most capable of carrying out the tasks they need to. Except for the Corp though. It’s common knowledge that they don’t really care about your work experience as a barista or whatever, they just want people that they’d like to party with. Most Georgetown students have a love/hate relationship with the Corp and their shitty coffee.
Did you fulfill your HALC requirement your freshmen or sophmore year? Would you recommend taking Phil over Ethics for freshmen year? I’m not excited about either so I’m putting it off for sophomore year.
I second everything guTA has said!
Sorry, I kind of forget CC exists for months at a time.
@1zogden1 Leavey isn’t particularly popping. There’s a Corp store, a lounge area, a food court, the esplanade (rooftop/outdoor space), bookstore. During games there’ll be a large group of people watching on a projector.
@class0f2017 There is no intramural tennis. If you don’t make the club team, you’re SOL. They demolished the outdoor tennis courts for the new basketball building, so the only courts on campus are four indoor courts, which is why club went from being 100% open to requiring competitive tryouts. You can reserve courts to play on your own, but only when team/club aren’t scheduled.
@BostonGurl42 I came in with a 4 on AP Lit so I only had to take one English class, which I did fall sophomore year. I’d recommend taking phil/ethics freshmen year as they’re pretty easy and you don’t want to get stuck taking them later on.
@SafeFromScience How competitive is the club team? I visited another D1 school and they said their club sports were D3 level. Would you say it’s he same for Georgwtown? More competitive or less than that?
