yep, agree comp sci not for case

I am an applicant to Case, and its one of my top schools. Does anyone know how good the Electrical Engineering program is at Case? I was supprised to see that Case isn't good with comp sci and I was wondering if that was the case too with EE.

Thx,
Tim

How many of you have been accepted RD yet? Ugh I sent in all my stuff on New Years' Day, so I know everything was on time, but I haven't received so much as a "hey, we got your application" postcard! It's weird because every other school accepted me weeks ago and has been begging me to visit, look at their website, calling me, etc. Is Case just preternaturally closed-lipped?

Case is pretty late on the admissions schedule, they were almost the last school to tell me that I applied. It should come in the coming week or so, don't fret.

any idea when we'll find out acceptances? will it be earlier than 4/1?

Are there any current Case computer science CC'ers who would not agree with this assessment?

RachelleyLee-- people who have already been accepted applied EA, so don't worry!

If we completed the commonapp counselor's mid-year report, do we need to send the new transcript?

I'm a junior (CWRU is 1 of my top choices). How would you rate CWRU's Chemical Engineering & Biomedical Engineering programs?

Also, what percentage of your EFC did CWRU cover with grants or scholarships (as opposed to loans & work)?

From what I've heard about case, it's hard to maintain a high GPA. Is that true for biology or chemistry majors?

mkondo- the BME program is widely known to be excellent. I don't know much about the ChemE department, although I have a couple friends studying ChemE that seem to like it.

Dante- To be honest, it really depends on the person. I'm a junior biology major, meaning i've already been through all the general bio courses, Ochem, half of the physics sequence (so pretty much all the GPA killers), and still have a great GPA. I do work pretty hard, and all my friends in the sciences with high GPAs work hard as well. I also know some people who study quite a bit and just can't seem to break into the A (or even B) range. What I can say is that its very rare to find a lazy science student with a high gPA.

How is Case for premed?
I've heard a great amount of hype about it, and my son was accepted with a great scholarship (yay), and it's looking to be his #1 school right now, but he really wants a rigorous premed curriculum that will carry him places. (I know pre med is not a major!!!--> I say this not to be derogatory to you, but because everytime I ask about premed, not here but elsewhere, I get burned for supposedly not realizing that...he's looking into Biochemistry and a humanities major)

How are the research opportunities?
Again, I've heard a lot of hype about Case as a "research institution," and my son's ultimate goal is an MD/PhD, and therefore research is crucial. Will Case REALLY provide a myriad of research opps?

How easily can he double-major?
He's interested in Biochemistry and a humanities major (maybe Religious Studies or Psych), and he's concerned about the stress of double majoring. Is it realisitic to get a B.S. in Biochem and a B.A. in a completely different discipline?

How is the social scene at Case and in Cleveland?
My son isn't a crazy party person, but he enjoys it sometimes. Is it really insane or is it tolerable for a mild party-person?

Biochemistry is supposedly a pretty difficult and time consuming major, so it would probably depend on your son's capabilities. Tons of kids in the sciences have an extra major since Case makes dual degrees so accessible, but those students certainly have to work a bit harder. I see now that you're looking at a BS in Biochem, which is definitely a lot of coursework. It may be best to just give it a go, and see how things turn out.

RESEARCH: This is one of my favorite things about Case. There is such a large graduate scene here, that there really are a huge number of opportunities in labs. Towards the end of my freshman year, I asked my advisor about research opportunities, and he just said "Oh, well I have space in my lab, if you're interested." So that got me started in a Biochem lab by the beginning of my sophmore year, and I stayed in there the entire year. Then I decided i want a change and got myself a summer internship in a genetics lab. Again, the boss of the genetics lab mentioned that he had room in his lab, and would love it if i stayed for my junior year.

I guess my point is that there are soooo many different departments, each of which has a number of labs. They could all use the help of a competent undergraduate, so yeah, I guess I really support all the opportunities provided by the graduate school.

Thank you! I appreciate the honest answer....

One more question...sorry...would it help to pursue the B.A. instead of the B.S. for double-majoring?

I second the research opportunities. From everything I have heard, they are myriad.

A BA & BS may possibly be an easier combination...depends on the major(s) and the departments. And perhaps on the number of AP credits you arrive with. That is something to discuss with your freshman advisor and you may not be able to plan this before you actually make a decision where to go.

I think a BA would make the dual-degree significantly more attainable. A BS in biochem is very demanding- you can always look at the department's website and check out the course requirements for each type of major.

I have a friend doing BS Bio and BA Psych (she's pretty ambitious), and I recall her saying she couldn't imagine doing a BS in Biochem with her psych degree. Then again, I have a friend doing BME (arguably the most time consuming major) along with German, so anything is possible.

Everyone keeps talking about CS rankings, but I just can't find them! I can find USN Computer ENGINEERING rankings, but that's primarily hardware. I'm interested in Computer Science, which is usually software. Where are these rankings? Thanks!
