Ask a current UCSB student anything :)

I know everyone has just gotten their admission notices and wants info on SB! I thought I'd just try to share my knowledge!

Hey fred, do you know anything about dorming assignments? a few of my friends are probably going to SB together and we were wondering how difficult it is to dorm all together

elemental951 - UCSB does everything they can to assign friends together as long as they indicate that they want to room together. It’s pretty much guaranteed.

Just accepted, wondering about the different residence halls. Are there major differences between Campus East and Campus West? What about Santa Catalina dorms in Storke Campus? That kind of thing. I just want to get a feel for what the different halls are like and where I would probably fit in best.

Hey fred11. I need some help. I cant decide between sb or Davis. I’m a bio major so I know Davis bio is a bit better. But I’m very social, where Davis is a bit lacking and sbs social scene is so hard to pass up, how would you say bio at sb looks when applying to a med or dental school? Does where I did undergrad really matter that much?

What’s the LGBTQ community like at UCSB?

@elemental
If you put your friends as roommates you’re basically guaranteed to room together

There are definitely differences between the different res halls.
You have the Chi5 area, which is San Nic, San Miguel, and the three shorties Anacapa, Santa Cruz, and Santa Rosa. Then there’s ft and manzanita.
Personally I think the shorties are the best. I live in Anacapa and absolutely love it. All the stories are pretty much the same. They are all two stories and pretty close to the beach and classes. I like them the best because you have so many people on your floor and they’re a lot more social than most of the other halls. There are about 65 girls in my hall and about the same number of guys around the corner. So its a lot easier to get to know people. San nic and san miguel have much smaller floors and smaller rooms. A lot of Chi5 rooms have ocean views (like mine!). Manzanita is really far off main campus. A lot of my friends who live there dont like it and a it. have moved into the Chi5. Ft has bigger rooms that are sure style so they share a bathroom with fewer people. The halls are smaller and it tends to be a lot crazier. If you’re put in ft you either love it or hate it. I wouldn’t move out of Anacapa for anything :)corner.

I had the same choice to make when I was deciding between colleges. I’m a premed bio major at sb an I really think I made the right decision. Sb’s reputation is getting better every year whil UCD’s isn’t and SB has a really well respected bio program. Honestly between sb and ucd there’s not going to be much of a difference to med schools. I really don’t think I would have been as happy at Davis as I am at ucsb :)

The LGBTQQIA community here is really active! I have a lot of friends that are in the community and it’s a really great understanding group of people. People at ucsb are generally really accepting of whatever gender and sexual orientation people have. There’s housing for anyone from the community but no one in my dorm has ever had a problem living on a non themed guys floor. There are a lot of resources but you shouldn’t feel locked in to just that :)

i’m really worried about the “party school” reputation that UCSB has. is it really as much of a party school as everyone says it is? and what is the campus/city like?

could you tell me about the santa cruz hall? and how likely is it that you’ll get into the res hall you request?

my bad, i meant santa catalina!

Are the shorties three to a room, double, or single?

Is it really 1 out if 3 ppl have stds at sb… =_=
My friends started discussing this during class and this pieve of data was offered…

oJay that is just a stereotypical rumour. I had the same thought but after doing research and asking UCSB students I learned that it was a total lie. UCSB std rates are about the average for a college environment.

Every college parties. The only reason sb gets such a party school rep is because the community right next to it is literally two square miles of college students. That’s a really unique situation and it’s going to mean lots of partying. The thing is that nobody parties everyday and plenty of people don’t party or drink at all. It’s convenient when you want to go but nobody is going to seriously pressure you to go out if you don’t want to. There’s definitely people who drink or smoke in the res halls but I’ve never felt pressure to do anything I didn’t want to and people are usually pretty nice about quieting down if their too loud. The reputation comes from IV not necessarily UCSB and a lot of the kids who don’t party everyday go to SBCC

ft is about a mile off campus and pretty far from the main part of IV. You have two towers, north and south, with ten floors each. Each floor has about 16 rooms and about 30 people. It’s usually a lot worse about partying which can be good and bad. Good if you want to party but if you want to study. The rooms are suite style so you’re connected to the room next to you by a bathroom. So you get your own bathroom but you can also get locked out of it and you don’t have a common bathroom if that happens. It’s about a 15 minute bike ride to campus or more depending on what building you’re going to. A lot of people take the bus and have to hang around campus between classes. The dining commons at ft is horrible. People literally eat cereal pretty much every night because there are no better options. From what I know people either love ft or hate it. There are no guarantees you’ll get your number one housing choice. If you put a living learning community you have a much better chance.

The shorties are normally doubles and triples. There are probably going to be a lot more triples as housing gets more impacted. There are a few quads in Santa rosa with four people. Anacapa and Santa Cruz have more triples but also a lot of ocean views and most people love their triples.

Absolutely not sb gets a bad rep that’s mostly not true.
