Hello! I’m a freshman planning out my schedule and I was wondering if a 20 minute gap between classes would be sufficient enough to get around campus? For example if I had a class that ends at 10:40 am at the Merrill Buildings, would I have enough time to get to a 11:00 am class at the Thim Lecture Buildings? Also is walking better or should I take the shuttle? And are they crowded? Thanks a lot!!

Easily. You can walk almost anywhere on campus in 20 minutes. The walk from Merrill to Thim Lecture should take 10-15 minutes.

I wouldn’t do that. I wasn’t able to make it from Communications to Visual Arts in 20 minutes, ended up having to drop the latter class. Don’t count on the shuttles either, they are very crowded after classes get out. I wouldn’t risk it unless you know how long it takes you, personally.

I know UCSC isn’t America’s craziest party school, but how is the on campus social life? Specifically at cowell/stevenson? How friendly is everyone?

@Barnaby: Last quarter I made the walk from Crown to Thim Lecture in 10 minutes. It’s not that hard in this case.

And that’s wonderful and all, I just would advise that the person walk it themselves and see how long it takes them before they commit to a schedule like that.

Oh, hey, I have a question for the fellow sluggie wuggie puddin pops: Why does no one on the campus wear UCSC apparel? Maybe I just wasn’t looking in the right place… for a year… but it seems like everyone just wears black all the time. But that can’t be, because then when I started wearing dark colors everyone suddenly started wearing white. How the hell does one dress at UC Santa Cruz so as to not feel out of place?

When I went, EVERYONE was wearing UCSC apparel, dunno what ur talking about :)

Is riding bikes out of the norm there? I plan on bringing one because it saves so much time rather than walking.

Eh. Personally I don’t wear UCSC apparel at school because well…I’m at school, it’s kind of obvious that I’m a student. I wear it elsewhere because that’s my way of saying I love UCSC. I don’t really see the dark/light color thing at all. UCSC has such a diversity of dress I don’t think anything you would do would help you fit in more. Hell, one time I saw someone wearing pants with stripes on one leg and stars on the other. :P

Bikes aren’t super common. The hills make them a pain. I do know there are a lot of good mountain bike trails though.

will using a bike even get me to class faster since there are so many hills

Would you recommend putting all your classes in a bunch(like in high school/not scattered) rather than having the occasional 1 hour break between classes? Is the 1 hour enough time to grab something to eat, go to the library, etc. Are 9/10AM classes that bad?(meaning everyone is dozing off zZz:D)

@Rishardo93 From my understanding, there isn’t any on campus parties (except for the woods but the cops started to come to those so idk about that anymore) because of CSOs but there are plenty of Off Campus Parties. You just have to know the right people to get invited to them. Also, you could always join a Socal Frat.

As for Cowell/Stevenson, I would assume most of the people there are friendly but I live at College 9 so I wouldn’t know. At least you’ll have a pretty okay dining hall.

@videodima A LOT of people have bikes on campus so you won’t be alone. I think it’s useful to have one but I don’t have a bike. lol

@rika342 I would recommend having your classes together so you can get them over with and have the rest of the day to do whatever. But it’s completely up to you. Depending on your class locations, you can do a little or a lot for those 1 hour breaks. I wouldn’t say 9/10am classes are bad but there probably will be a good amount of students falling asleep in them.

Hey, I was wondering how hard the transition is between semester and quarter systems? I talked to my friend who graduated from Riverside and he said you have no time to slack off or have fun (he was an engineering major, I am a biology major). I’m worried that being from a community college on the semester system that it will be difficult to keep up. Also, how friendly are the people there? Are there a lot of protests all the time? Do a lot of people go to the OPERS gym?

BTW… I love the entire freakin campus. Its like a workout freaks dream (which I am)… hills, trees, deer, oceans… Amazing!

Hi: I’m an incoming freshman this fall and I wanted to know if a lot of girls rush for Gamma Phi Beta and if it is hard to get in?

@Biomajorathlete I think it’ll be at least somewhat difficult but if you make sure you study , study whenever you have free time and maybe even try tutoring or always go to office hours, and you should be fine.

I would say at least 75% of people are super friendly but the only times I had to deal with people that weren’t nice was at the College 9/10 Housing Office.

There probably are protests but I don’t normally pay that much attn. to them.

Almost everyone goes to OPERS and I suggest to either go early in the morning or late at night so you can actually workout and not have to deal with so many people there.

@universitygirl21 I’m not sure about Gamma Phi Beta but I bet they’ll have a booth you can check out during the OPERS “Clubs/Orgs” Event during the beginning of Fall Quarter and you can ask them yourself!

First of all, I am an incoming freshman going to Cowell and I am majoring in MCD Biology.

I was recently checking the schedule of classes and I am worried that Schliech (whom I’ve heard is horrible) will teach the 2:00 Chem 1A class because as of right now it is listed as “Staff”. What are the chances of that happening? I got a 33/42 on the Chem self assessment signifiying that I have a good foundation if having a weak background would be an issue with taking Schliech.

Secondly, I plan on signing up for Math 11A with Eastman. How is he? He has mixed reviews on ratemyprofessor.

Also, I placed into Cowell 80B because of the 10/12 I got on the AWPE. What should I expect?

Lastly, when should I schedule my discussion sections? Morning, Afternoon, or night? I have been told by a friend that the later in the day the section, the better because that way I can get hints from people who took it earlierly to know what to expect. Is this true? And should I schedule them on M,W, F so that I can have Tuesday and Thurday off? Or should I schedule them on Tuesday, Thursday so I can have class everyday?

Thanks in advance. Much appreciated.

Hi
I just got my (provisional) room assignment, and I have been placed in a single in a quiet/study intensive hall in Porter. I am happy to have a single, but I am a little worried about being in a quiet/study intensive hall. I am not planning on being super loud/crazy, but I just wanted to get a sense of how quiet those halls really are. Any help or input would be appreciated!

aem108, out of curiosity (since I am still on the Porter waitlist), did you put on your application that you’d accept a single and/or Study Intensive housing, or did they just throw you in there because they didn’t have anything else available?

I said I would accept a single on a quiet/study intensive floor, and I also specified that I really wanted a single no matter what. I am thinking that they put me on that floor because that is where they had a single available, but idk.
My sense is singles are harder to get than doubles/triples.
