Ask a current UCSC student your questions!

@ Liesel: What’s the system called Pass/No Pass? If I don’t pass a class, does that mean I don’t gain any credits for that class and have to retake it?

Also, I heard that all the seniors in UCSC have to take a exam to end the end of the year?? Otherwise, they can’t graduate???!

I just recently accepted and am now making a decision between Santa Cruz and SDSU. I’d like to know more about the film program as far as overall opinion/satisfaction goes.

What is there to do on campus over the weekends? Is there a campus movie theatre???
Any stores like Target or Walmart accessible without a car?

I’m seriously hoping there’s a campus movie theatre!

I got accepted as incoming freshman under Managerial economics major. I also got accepted to UCLA pre-business economics. Does UCSC has caring, knowlegeable professor in the school of managerial economics. Both are UC with UCLA even closer to me so I am debating which is best fit for me?
ths for your help.

@kcobap: Right. If you don’t pass, you don’t get credit. But remember, you get to choose which classes you take as a pass/no pass class. Many people do that for their GEs so it’s less stressing about a grade. And there’s no such exam that I know of. It might be for a specific major, I don’t know.

@leftywamum0nkey: There’s no on campus movie theater. Certain clubs do movie showings in some of the huge lecture halls or occasionally the communications building (which does have a small theater), but nothing too common. There’s no Target/Walmart close to campus.

@galexandriac: Keep in mind I have only taken one film class. But word of mouth from other student suggests that UCSC’s film program is not very filmy. It’s very “new media” and digital artsy, but it doesn’t seem…serious. Given, there are a spattering of classes that do seem good, but most of them fall into the category of artsy fartsy new media that doesn’t teach you any technical skill.

I’m sorry guys but there’s only so much I can answer about programs outside of my own major. :(

Oh I remembered my second question!

When do we get to see our financial package from UCSC?
Do we have to intend to register to do so or is there a specific date?

Thanks for answering my questions Liesel. :)

[UC Santa Cruz Financial Aid Office](UC Santa Cruz Financial Aid Office)
^ Under important dates is says admitted students begin receiving financial aid estimates April 1st

Is UCSC at all generous with FinAid? It’s just me and my mom ($59,000) and my dad pays child support. Chapman has offered me ~$42,000/year and other privates have offered me about that much, too. My family can maybe squeeze $10k/year out of pocket and I really really REALLLYYY do not want large loans. Will UCSC come through for me do you think?

@UCSBplease There is a financial aid estimator that estimates the amount of aid you will be given [UCSC Financial Aid Estimator](http://www2.ucsc.edu/finaidcalc/calculator/index.php)

How can I get an email account without submitting my SIR?

To JustDoIt;
Please tell me if UCSC has good economics professors (both lower and upper div) and how about business economic mgmt. I am struggling if I should go to UCLA Pre-Bus or UCSC. I really really want good instructors but don’t know anyone who can give me insight recommendations. Can you give me some advice. Thank you.

Is Econ a good major at UCSC?
and will there be opportunities for research?

Do you know what the chances are of getting in under appeal?

Can someone please help me decide which college would be best for me?
So here is a bit of info about me:
-White female
-From Socal Los Angeles
-I’m really opened minded and would prefer to be around people that aren’t going to judge others that might not be as “preppy”, “hippy”, or “normal” as them.
-I want to have a balance between a great social life and academics. I don’t really mind drugs or drinking. I’ll socially drink or smoke weed, on occasions, but I won’t take part in hard core drugs. However, I don’t mind if the people in my dorm do.
-Appearance doesn’t matter much but I personally like to be presentable, not in a stuck up b*tch kind of way.
-I want a relaxing environment.
-I’m not a hippie but I am liberal.
-I’m going in as a psychology major.
-I listen to a broad range of music from hip-hop to country but I prefer rock/alternative/grunge/indie/.

Any help would be appreciated!! I’m going to be a freshman next year and am really excited. Between all my UC acceptances, UCSC was for sure the best fit for me. Yay Class of 2016

@catchret44 Cowell, Stevenson, or College 8 sound fine :)

Thanks for the suggestions! Can you please describe Cowell, Stevenson, and COllege 8 in details for me? Getting reaply excited

Is human biology a good major in UCSC? competitive? I heard UC Davis has a better biology program, but what about human bio in UCSC?

is there any way I can bring my car up there as a freshman?

@nickma: Not a super safe way, at least. You can buy permits to park at the churches around the base of campus, or in a lot downtown, but I think most people find it’s more trouble than it’s worth.

Sorry for not being able to answer all your questions, guys. Your classmates are keeping me rather busy with the facebook group.

How many days a week do students typically go to school? I’m curious because it seems that nearly all students live on campus.
