Do you think it’s necessary to pay a visit to the school? You suggested for me to look into the Honors Program I love the beach and warm places, and I also like the fact that UNCW is a top research school, but not everyone is pre-med right? What is the most popular major that you’ve seen?
What do you think were your favorite things about the school?
Do you know anyone in Honors? (I think I’m only interested in honors; I have a 35 ACT, 97 GPA) If you do, what do they think of it?
How is the area? Is everything far apart? Are there any nearby hospitals or good internship places off-campus? I prefer an urban campus, but I am willing to commute to good city areas too. I really know nothing about the school haha plus I just checked Naviance and no one in my school’s history has every applied :))
@LushLillies yes, absolutely pay a visit to campus if/when you can!! I wasn’t able to visit campus before actually enrolling, so definitely visit.
There are a lot of popular majors on campus, but the most popular ones are marine biology, business, creative writing, and film studies. I myself am an International Business major, and I know a lot of other business majors. But at the same time, I also know a lot of people who are majoring all sorts of other fields.
There are a lot of things that attracted me to UNCW. For starters, the quality of the Cameron School of Business is excellent. It’s one of the most underrated business schools in the country for sure, and the curriculum is very well-structured. Secondly, I enjoy that it’s a completely different world. I came to UNCW from suburban New Jersey, nine hours away. It’s far enough away to create some distance from annoyingly awkward high school memories and reinvent myself, while not being so far away for me to get homesick.
I know many kids in Honors. They’re all awesome people with great aptitude and hunger for success. They all feel that the Honors program, while difficult, is rewarding. You’d get into Honors without any issues for sure.
The area immediately around campus, to be honest, is strip mall heaven. Wilmington, however, is amazing. The New Hanover Regional Medical Center is close by and there are great internships available off campus. http://uncw.edu/preprofessional/community/shadowing.html
Which state are you from, again?
Thank you for replying!! I’m also from suburban New Jersey ! Well, most of NJ is suburban (besides the coast and some more red neck areas with lots of strange wildlife)…
I will definitely try to pay a visit! Well, strip malls aren’t that exciting, but I guess I will really have to be there to see if I like the location. It’s really one of the more uncertain schools I have since I’ve only been to NC once (on vacation, Outer Banks lol)…
Also, you said in a previous post that UNCW is mostly white. Do you think they are looking for diversity, and do they have an OOS cap? I actually really like schools with a population of people who are really different from myself, which is really difficult because I’m from probably one of the most common demographics at top schools (Asian female from NJ lollll). I’m assuming there are a lot more students from North Carolina. How about representation from other states and other ethnicities?
This should help a little with your questions - http://uncw.edu/aboutuncw/aboutJustthefacts.html
As for a cap, yes the UNC system has a cap (fun fact: all of the public schools are UNC, but don’t tell NCSU). Last I checked it was around 18%, and most schools don’t hit it.
Don’t worry about the strip malls. UNCW just happens to be in/next to one of the larger commercial areas in Wilmington. Take a stroll down Google street view and see for yourself.
@DecideSomeHow thank you so much for the information! I never thought about the Google street view actually; I’ve seen a tour on YouTube but it really made the campus look dreary and gray…but I think the video was made in winter, and probably featured some of the older buildings.
Do you happen to know if the gender gap is an issue? 62% female? Just wondering since it does stick out. 2% Asian too…this school is so different from the other ones I’m looking at (except UMiami, but I’m interested in their BS/MD program mostly), so reading up just confirms the fact that I really need to do more research…
@LushLillies take a virtual tour on the school website - much more authentic imho. You won’t experience much of a winter at all - there was no snow this past winter at all. But you will see quite a bit of rain here, to say the least.
No, the gender gap is not an issue at all. Personally, I don’t even really recognize it when walking down Chancellor’s for some reason. But while I definitely notice the ratio in some of my classes, there is no such thing as a “gender divide” at UNCW. The school community is in harmony down here.
Yes, 2% Asian is small. But you should be able to find your niche no matter which race you are. Most OOSers are actually fellow Northerners, especially our fellow New Jerseyans. Marylanders and New Yorkers are also prevalent OOSers, as well as Pennsylvanians, Bay Staters (MA), Virginians, etc.
“Do you happen to know if the gender gap is an issue? 62% female?”
Can’t really help with that, but I think LBad has it covered, and better than I could. He’s a student. I’m just a parent whose kids considered UNCW but went elsewhere. The main thing I can offer is info on the surrounding area - I’ve lived here for a little over 10 years.
@DecideSomeHow thank you for replying anyways! I see a Walmart, Sam’s Club, TJMax…definitely not a walkable area, but not completely rural at least. I have no idea what Wilmington is like, and even don’t know if there are major cities in NC (besides the capital)…but I went on the virtual campus tour on the website, and it seems much nicer than the other videos portrayed it as. But of course, the one on the website has to be the best advertising, right?
@LBad96 thank you for replying as well! I definitely feel like NC students are more relaxed…especially in comparison with my high school where everyone gets like 4 hours of sleep and cries about their calc hw. It would definitely be different. I guess it doesn’t hurt to apply when the time comes! It’s rolling admissions right? Might as well plan to send the UNCW w/ honors app in at the same time as Rutgers. I just recently found your college admissions process app, and you really motivated me to want to start early next August and get the decisions in!
@LushLillies major cities in NC are Charlotte, Raleigh, Durham, Winston-Salem, Wilmington, and Greensboro.
UNCW isn’t rolling admissions. The early action deadline is November 1, regular decision is February 1.

In state
@0rca yeah, you should get in no problem! What attracts you here?
The business school. You actually replied to one of my threads earlier, and linked me to this thread in your reply.
@0rca ah, yes, that is true. I was wondering if anything else had caught your eye about the school.
Just commented on your other thread, btw.

Are you instate or OOS?
Instate you’re good to go, and if you bring your score to a 27-28 apply to honors college.
OOS the issue becomes costs - what can your family afford from income and savings?
@Ncman123 judging from your username, I assume you’re in-state. If so, you should be in.
Great thanks for the reply. What exactly is the Honors college and are there any benefits in doing it?
