Ask a Dartmouth Freshman anything.

I'm a '14 male at Dartmouth, just about to finish my first year here. Ask me any questions about my first year experience, greek life, etc etc.

Hi stl2, thanks for doing this! I saw your post in another thread mentioning that one needs a car to “burst the Dartmouth bubble”. I’m a '15 and I’ve been debating whether or not I should get a car freshman year. Is it worth it?

Is the weather really unbearable? Also, is there enough of a social life on campus to make up for location?

^^2015hopeful, I don’t think freshmen are allowed to have cars.

“Hi stl2, thanks for doing this! I saw your post in another thread mentioning that one needs a car to “burst the Dartmouth bubble”. I’m a '15 and I’ve been debating whether or not I should get a car freshman year. Is it worth it?”

Some would say it would be worth it, others would disagree. I have mixed opinions. One, it shows that you might be a spoiled brat. Two, you won’t get to suffer being jailed in hanover with nothing to do except binge drink (note the slight sarcasm). Three, it might be a pain in the booty if your car is high maintenance, or if it breaks down, etc.

HOWEVER, a car can be VERY beneficial. You could go to West Lebanon and eat legit, non-plastic food (you know the kind that actually spoils when you leave it out, instead of just drying from the preservatives?). It can also save you a lot of time when you need to go to Walmart, best buy, since you dont have to wait for Advance Transit everytime.

I suggest that you wait it out maybe fall term before making this decision. But i gotta tell you, having a car right now (spring term, its hotter here than back home, socal, which tells you a lot) would be very helpful.

“Is the weather really unbearable? Also, is there enough of a social life on campus to make up for location?”

As a person who grew up in socal, where theres basically one season the whole year, yes, it was truly excruciating walking to class, etc. if youre from the new england area, it shouldnt be as bad. but with the climate change every year, you never know how hot or cold its gonna be. for example, this year, we had a lot of snow storms, the last one on april 1st. however, the '13s have told me that the previous year, they only had like 5 inches of snow. so i suggest you invest in a good northface jacket. it’ll keep you “happy” for the most part.

as for the social scene, the greek life is what keeps most people sane here, imo. if i hadnt gone out and played pong, worked out, etc, i would have gone crazy, no doubt. but the greek life isnt the only thing thats prominent. there are always social events, such as movies at the hop, free food, and other events which dont require drinking, if thats what youre into. it is mostly your job to find out what you like and what you dont, and do what makes you happy.

“^^2015hopeful, I don’t think freshmen are allowed to have cars.”

Yes you are. As a matter of fact, my friend, who’s a fellow '14, has a very nice mercedez right now. a very rich fellow.

What was your SAT? Do you think I have a shot with 2200?

CR 730, M 670, W 800

mine was CR 720 M 800 W 800(Essay 12). you have a fair shot. however, SAT scores arent the only part of the application. you might want to bring up your score to about a 2250 if you want. your ecs, teacher recs, PEER EVALUATION (i’ve personally met and discussed this with maria laskaris at a dinner), as well as your ethnicity, family income, legacy, etc, ALL factor in. SAT scores are only a part of the equation.

Does applying ED really greatly improve chances for admission? D is my first choice and would just like to weigh my options.

"Yes you are. As a matter of fact, my friend, who’s a fellow '14, has a very nice mercedez right now. a very rich fellow. "

You’re technically not allowed to have a car freshman year, but you can buy a parking spot from one of the frats and be fine.

i have heard that it does. but before you do that, have you visited dartmouth before?

yes, and i think you can also get parking spots off campus? not too sure, ill ask him.

THanks for doing this!! ^^ Dartmouth is my dream school because of its D-plan and great chances of financial aid!
What I want to ask is… I have 7 AP scores (Micro econ : 4 Macro econ : 5 US history : 4 World history : Not yet Statistics : Not yet Com GP : Not yet Music Theory : Not yet)
and If I have only two 5 and five 4, would it gives bad effect on admission(I’ll apply ED)??I suppose so… ㅠㅠ

im not sure if this might surprise you, but AP scores really dont even matter that much in the admissions process. Dartmouth rarely gives credit for most of them, as do other prestigious institutions. factors that are more important are your GPA, SAT scores, ecs, and peer evaluation. i’ve talked to the dean of admissions, and she told me that she thinks the other schools applications are bs because you really cant tell who someone is by reading an essay. that is why what someone else’s viewpoint of you can be more helpful. so yeah, focus on those things, not the AP.

No, unfortunately I have not. I am an international student and do not have the resources to visit Dartmouth. Dartmouth has been my dream school for a long time now. I’m interested in D because of it’s undergraduate focus and location. Does it really help you, even if you’re an international student? Thanks.

one of my friends here thats an international student got in early decision. i dont think he visited dartmouth before he came here either. i dont know how much it helps to apply ED, but im pretty sure it should give you a slight edge, than say, applying RD.

hey I am an international and Dartmouth is one of my favorite colleges. I am planning to apply for Fall 2012

I have some questions:

Last year apparently there were no supplementary essays. So Dartmouth soley evaluates a candidate base on his/her common app essay?

Does your intended major showed in Common App have any bearing on admission decision?

Lastly any tips for internationals?

Thanks :D

 1. In place of the supplement essay, there is a peer recommendation.
 2. No, the intended major does not affect anything. More than half the people change their minds once they start college.
 3. I am not an international, but basically, if you have money, and show that you are well rounded and have good stats, you have a good shot.

Can you explain the peer evaluation?

If you have money?
I thought Dartmouth was need blind for internationals …
