Ask a Deerfield freshmen!

Deerfield has an active Debate Forum. If you are into Speech and Debate, check this out: [Debaters Take Canada](http://scroll.deerfield.edu/?p=4459)

Deerfield Academy, founded in 1797, is an independent, co-educational boarding school located in Western Massachusetts. Explore our rigorous academic programs, athletic prowess, and the beauty, drama, and rhythm of campus life.

Ask away. I have a few new Sophomore and Junior friends who might also answer your questions if you are applying for those grades.

How much sleep do you usually get? Were you worried about not getting in, or you were confident about your application

I usually get 8 to 9 hours of sleep as a freshman!
And as for the application…nothing s ever certain. While I was confident in the fact that I did the best I could on my application, you never know if you have a definite spot in the school. All you can do is your best and hope for the result to reflect your efforts!!

i recently toured and interviewed at deerfield and i absolutely loved it!!! its my top school and im dying to get accepted there. However, when i was there my parents and i got the feeling that you kind of need a connecction or alumni as a relative to get in …we kind of felt it was a little bit not stuck up but very prestigious…! we are also applying for financial aid cause my dads business has gone down the past few years but like we are technically “middle upper class” but according to my dads accountant it does not appear like that in the banks so i do thing that i can fit in with people at deerfield because i am/was spoiled. did i get the wrong or right impression from deerfield? i still really loved it though

also how are the people there…is it cliquey or is mostly everyone nice and supportive?

Deerfield dress code may make it look like they are a little more preppier than other schools. You don’t need to have any connections to get in and I certainly didn’t have any connections and I got in. Deerfield places a high priority on building a diverse class and 35% of the student body, that is over 200 students, is on financial aid with the average aid around $38,000. Deerfield students are friendliest of any BS that you can find. Yes, admission at 13.5% is hard but that is the reason why I chose Deerfield to be among the brightest.

How are your math, debate, and Model UN clubs/teams? What tournaments do they compete in? I also heard that you have crew and golf which are also my passions.

Deerfield has very active Math, Debate, and Model UN clubs. For math we have some USJMO qualifiers on our team and we compete in the WM Math League and compete to qualify for the Math Olympiads via AMC/AIME/USAMO. For Debate, we compete in the DANEIS league along with many other HADES schools. Our team competed in the international Debate tournament in Canada last year. Our Debate coach Mr. O’Donnell is simply amazing. For Model UN, we go to the Yale Model UN and BU MUN. Our crew and Golf teams are very good and it is competitive to make the Varsity and JV teams.

Any other questions guys? Deerfield2015 has been doing a pretty great job of answering them…

i asked how deerfield did on choate day, but he didn’t respond…
is there an answer for my question?

Deerfield started the Summer Science Research Program (SSRP) this year where they match the interested students with Professors and Researchers at Universities and Research Labs. This is really cool if you are into Math & Science. [SSRP](http://deerfield.edu/2011/11/winter-is-here-what-are-you-doing-this-summer/)

On Choate Day Deerfield did fairly well as far as I know (and again, I’m only a freshmen.) I know that we won more varsity sports games then they did but as far as the actual “choate day” I believe that we as in DA lost. But when you tally up the games that weren’t actually played on “Choate Day” like JV waterpolo (which we won against Choate) and the cross country meet at Andover where we placed higher than Choate than we technically won Choate day! But no matter if we won or lost I can definitely say that Choate week was FANTASTIC…never have I ever seen a group of people with so much school spirit before. It was such a fun experience. We also have a 25 minute fireworks show at our bonfire!!!

Hey, I got a letter from Deerfield today about the writing program. I’m not a big writer, I’m more mathy, so I don’t know why they sent it to me. Is this a good sign or do they do this for everyone?

Writer’s Craft is a required Sophomore course. I wouldn’t read too much into the letter as admission at 13.5% acceptance rate is a crap shoot for anyone. Do your best on all parts of your application. If you like the school show that in your interview. Deerfield has amazing Math faculty and great course choices. You can do an independent tutorial with a Math faculty if you exhaust the Math curriculum. We have an active Math club with USJMO qualifiers on the team.
Deerfield2015 -I’ve heard a lot of people say that boarding school ends up being a lot different than they thought it would be, but in a good way. What are some unexpected things that you experienced at Deerfield? How does your experience so far compare to what your ideas about the school were? Thanks so much!

I find the classes are harder than I expected especially if you are in accelerated/honors classes. But I learned to adjust to their expectations quickly. Also, I was expecting that the teachers will be good, but what I find is that they are amazing across the board. I’m yet to run into an average teacher at Deerfield. My experience at Deerfield has exceeded my expectations in many ways. It is a microcosm of all the amazing and kind faculty, students, and staff that you run into at Deerfield that made my experience fabulous so far. I came here hoping to pursue math and sciences, but after taking humanities classes, now I’m a total Humanities person. You could say Deerfield transformed me already. There are so many clubs, sports, and campus activities here that you can get involved in to pursue your passions. I also discovered a new sport squash that I really enjoy. If you are an eager and passionate explorer, you’ll find Deerfield your home away from home. I really think I made the best choice by not choosing the larger schools after revisits.
