I got the Lieber Scholarship (for National Merit), and my letter said something about the University providing me with a notebook computer. What does anyone know about that?

I’m in Moore so I’m assuming based on previous posts that it’ll be a PC, which I’m fine with. I’m just curious.

S got his free computer at move in time freshman year but knew in advance what is was from mailings(this was before they switched it to Macs for the McNair recipients). At this point maybe the lovely people in the Office of Fellowships and Scholar Programs can help you out with any
info you need . they will be your point of contact on campus after you enroll (for all things scholarship related…them and the Honors College staff).OFSP@sc.edu, 803-777-0958.Jan Smoak is especially helpful (Asst Director).
And…CONGRATULATIONS on the Lieber!!!

D, a McNair Scholar, got an email today saying, among other things, that “laptop selection notifications were placed in the mail this afternoon. Keep your eye out for this to arrive at your permanent residence within the next few days.” So, I would think the Lieber recipients should be getting “this” soon as well, which I assume is some sort of a form that let’s you chose whether they give you a Mac or a PC.

what is the gpa average for USC? The average of kids who have gone here from my high school since 2006 is 3.1. mine is a little below that but according to naviance.com im right in the middle of a group of kids who got accepted. What is your opinion?

I know this thread is kind of old… but meh. I’ll ask my question anyways in hopes some current student can answer it. XD

If I go home on the weekends, will I miss out on a lot?

I kind of want to go home on the non-home football game weekends… but I didn’t know if that would just be a bad idea or not. USC does seem pretty dead on campus on the weekends. (At least when I’ve been there it has.)

I would also like to know whether many students go home on non football weekends. My D would be an OOS student and thus I was hoping campus is active on weekends. Can a current student answer this? Thanks.

I mean, you will miss out on things regardless- if you go home, you will miss things at school, and if you stay at school, you will miss things at home. The trick is finding balance. I only go home on breaks- but I also live over a thousand miles from school soo going home regularly isn’t exactly feasible. My friends who live closer might go home for a weekend or two during the semester, but I don’t really know anyone who goes home more frequently than that. To me, campus stays pretty full- my friends always seem to be around, and there are always things to do. Some weekends are a little quieter than others, but not by much. It’s not a suitcase college by any means. If you’re really worried about missing things with your friends, invite them to come home with you! I’ve gone home with friends from time to time, and it’s a lot of fun.

If only I could do that. My parents have a pretty strict no visitors policy to our house. Only three of my friends in my entire life have even seen the inside of my house. XD

But I suppose I’ll just have to figure it out when I get to USC. I live close enough that I could actually come home and go back to school in a day if I really wanted to. One of my old coaches actually drove to and from my school from Columbia every single day, so it’s definitely feasible. =/

In a sad type of way, I am actually looking forward to my S not being at home so much. We have had a house full of “other peoples kids” (I only have one) for the past 14 years or so. We have come home to some surprise parties (surpise only to me and my wife) with upwards of 100 high school (and a few college) students. Arg

When we went to watch the USC band clinic performance, we were kind of surprised to see how many of our hometown kids who happen to be students at USC actually went to the concert. I am assuming that they stayed at USC on that weekend. But I have also been surprised to occasionally see some USC students in our hometown, or even in our home, on weekends and sometimes even on weekdays when they should be in columbia. I don’t know whats up with dat.

When I was in college, I almost always went home, but I ownly lived 30 minutes away. With gas prices like they are, I really can’t see students going home that much these days.

My son only has one more full weekend at home, he is even gone this weekend. He will be touring with a musical youth group all summer and will actually leave the weekend before graduation, come back for graduation, then leave again the next day. Then two days later he will go to the USC summer orientation, and drive back to his music group in
GA. We will have to go to GA to pick up his car, then we will not see him until August because their only nearby performance will be in Atlanta in August. His tour actually doesn’t end until a few days after move in at USC (so he will miss the USC marching band camp), so we will have to drive to atlanta, pick him up late in the evening and return home, the next day he will have to leave early in the morning to start USC. fortunately there are several other USC students who are doing the exact same thing, so he won’t be the only one missing out on those first few days.

As I learned many years ago when first going on college tours, you may not see on campus students(dorm dwellers) during daylight hours on weekends, especially earlier in the day. they sleep in, and then hang around! Dont forget 1/2 or more of the population lives off campus and you wont see them wandering around on the weekends.

if you are in Cola on a weekend night, take a look at 5 Points, or other areas where they congregate.During the day, look at the Strom. S went home with his friends a few times, but mostly as 1st semester freshmen or on a holiday. It is not a campus that emptys out on weekends. And the longer kids are there, the less they go home altogether…local or not!
