are carolinians welcoming to northerners? can northerners fit in?

Look at the bottom of the last page.

im a male, is it different than with girls?

There are a large number of students at USC from the north and midwest with significant numbers from the Cincinnati and Philadelphia areas as well as from NJ and surprisingly a lot from Massachusetts. There is only one sorority that I am aware of that selects mostly southern girls; it has it roots in the south and is truly a “southern” sorority. As others have said the majority of sororities have girls from everywhere.

Overall you will find the school and students very welcoming. There are some very conservative students in the mix and some shall we say, who are “unenlightened” as well which I guess you could translate as still fighting the civil war (or as they call it, the war of northern aggression) but they are certainly in the minority. This will be the case at any school in the deep south but being in a bigger, more cosmopolitan city like Columbia sure helps to mitigate and balance things more than if you were in a strictly college town in the deep south.

My D is fairly liberal and has had to bite her tongue a few times over the four years but overall has really loved her time at USC and has made many very good lifelong friends.

Nope. That being said, if you do decide to come down here I don’t think that many people want to hear about “how great the North is” and “blah blah blah the North”. A kid on my hall was like that first semester… It got really annoying and he transferred to UMass after the semester.

We’re coming to visit last week of March. D is accepted and also accepted to Clemson and NC St. Looking for recommendations as to how to get the “full effect” of USC and Columbia in a couple days. Restaurant suggestions, too.

are you looking for upscale parent type meals or student type places?

If you can, stay at the Inn at USC. It’s very nice centrally located (on campus) and if you let them know you are visiting USC when making reservations, they offer reduced rates. When you factor in free cooked to order breakfast and free parking it’s a pretty good deal as well. You can leave your car parked and walk to campus as well.

As far as food, Columbia has lots of great choices. There are great burgers (and other food) at Pawley’s Porch in Five Points…it was just featured on Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives on the Food Channel about three weeks ago.

For wood fired pizza try Zia’s (on Divine), DiPrato’s is an excellent choice for lunch…not touristy very good salads, sandwiches and entrees (it’s also owned by Diane of Diane’s on Divine which is one of the top “upscale” restaurants in town), and Motor Supply for lunch or dinner is a great choice…small, intimate and very good food. We had lunch there on a Saturday and thoroughly enjoyed it.

There are many restaurants in the Vista area as well as in Five Points. For good home style cooking, Yesterday’s is a great choice. Honestly, too many to mention.

If you have any special tastes or any specific questions feel free to PM me. We’ve been traveling to Columbia since we were looking at the school like you and our D is now a senior at USC so we have tried a lot of places and our D has recently told us about a few more new places that she really likes.

I really liked Liberty Tap Room when I came for orientation.

cathymee–Probably places where we’d be more likely to see students…casual, maybe a microbrewery?

Thanks eadad and Knights 09…I’m starting a list.

Liberty Tap Room is a staple in COLA, it can be very crowded with long waits during busy times like during move-in, family weekend or game weekends. We’ve eaten there many times and have no problem recommending it. I was offering a few other places as alternatives to Vista locations though I have enjoyed many restaurants there…Motor Supply Bistro is in the Vista…

As to Brewpubs:

There’s the Carolina Ale House in The Vista; it’s a chain but the food was decent…much better food at other places but if you want a microbrewery…

[Home - Carolina Ale House](http://www.carolinaalehouse.com/)

Also the Hunter-Gatherer Brewery and Ale House…I’ve never been there but it gets very good to excellent reviews…

And of course, the Flying Saucer…also a chain but very popular with the kids especially on “Pint Nights”…

Overall, are most professors and students conservative or liberal (what is the overall school atmosphere)?

Is there a big “southern pride” (like people who still want to secede from the union lol) thing? Does anybody still wave confederate flags? I’m from KY, but Louisville is not very southern compared to some other cities here.

Do you know how difficult the Honors College is to get into? For example how many apply vs. how many get in. On the website I read something about honors students getting priority for international business major, did I read this correctly?

Thanks, and sorry for such long questions!

hi im from new jersey and thinking of going south… Im already nervous. I am an Asian American who is probably used to the north. Would it be hard to fit in there?
Also is the medical university of south carolina connected because I am interested in that place.
Can you tell me what kind of scores would be needed to attend south carolina? Thanks so much for the responses

SpontaneousGypsy- Ive had a good mix of liberal and conservative. This semester in my 5 classes, id say i have 2 liberal and 2 conservative teachers. You get a good mix of where the teachers are from and with that of course, you get differences in views. Id also say yes there is a big “southern pride” thing, not in the same way but I mean they are proud of the south and where they are from. Yes, yes a lot of people fly the confederate flag. The capital actually still flies it outside and many people I know have confederate flags in their house. Its not really about what it stood for, its just a symbol for the south. I really dont know much about the honors college I just know that you need high SATs (1400) and high GPA to get into it.

bbazn97-I dont think it would be hard to fit ive found that girls fit in well and theres a lot of people from jersey. So id say the main thing would be just to get out and get involved. And the medical university isnt on campus. Its like 5-10 minutes away from the central campus. For scores, I would say you need at least an 1100 (CR + M).

Is it true that for students under 21 there’s no real nightlife, or are there the typical college frat and apartment parties?

im sure you got your answer but no thats not true theres a lot of nightlife

and for an update I got into the IB program here which was a big thing

^Congrats, JRWriter. That is, indeed, a very big deal. Hard program to get in to. You should be very proud.

Congrats JR…good to hear that…

Congrats, JR. Great achievement.
