There has been crime around campus, but a large percentage of it has been off campus in areas like home park. I’ve walked across campus at night before and haven’t felt unsafe at all. Like any city, Atlanta has crime, but the campus police have done a good job of keeping the campus safe.

you know someone has to ask it… is the girl situation really as bad as the internet says? I always hear talk about how theres always 10 guys going after 1 girl and all that stuff… Thank you for any replies.

No, it’s not. The problem is that many kids go to college and assume it’s like the movies - toga parties every night and supermodels knocking on your door throwing themselves at you. No school is like that. If you want to meet women, you need to talk to them, join organizations, and make friends.

So a guy gets to college, women aren’t begging him for sex, and he needs an excuse (of course it’s not his fault). So he blames the “ratio”.

Here’s what I said when someone asked about the ratio at GT vs the ratio at UIUC. Someone mentioned that GT is 60% male, while UIUC is 50% male:

thats what i thought, thanks banjohitter! i had a strong feeling that pathetic guys just needed an excuse lol. that was one major disadvantage in my mind that ga tech had compared to my other top choice, ut austin. i guess now i can disregard it.

Can freshman buy the parking spaces? And if so, do they buy them straight from the school or is it like some other schools where they buy spaces from upperclassmen with no cars?

Yea, freshmen can have cars. You can buy them directly from school. It is pretty expensive though.

Is it easy to change majors? I applied as chemE but I’m thinking of switching to matE when school starts.

^
Yes, you will have an opportunity to change majors at FASET. As long as you declare a major before 60 hours of credit, you should be fine.

phew. thanks, i was worried!

How hard is it to get an A in Engl 1101 and 1102 if you hate writing (pretty much the only non-honors/AP class jr & sr year of HS was english, but got As in non-honors English)? Is it better to take Eng Comp at the local junior/community college over the summer and just have the units transfer over or is it better to take it at GT to help cushion the GPA.

Do you recommend a mac or another brand?

I transferred in credits for ENGL 1101 and 1102, so I had no direct experience with those classes at Tech. But my impression from my friends’ experiences were that you do very little writing for courses that purport to be about “composition.” My “shake my head” story that I always use for this question involves proofreading a friend’s essay for ENGL 1102. He was supposed to write a two page opinion, but his essay was two pages of facts; there wasn’t a single normative sentence to be found anywhere. He got an A on the paper because it had no grammatical errors or typos.

But then again, your mileage may very well vary. When I came to Tech, the curriculum was changed so that everyone had to take LCC 3401 (now 3403) - Technical Communication. My professor, a different one than my friends’, was far more hardcore for this course. For the first assignment, I didn’t follow his instructions literally. At the time, I had a hard time distinguishing between the executive summary and the introduction. It didn’t help that one of his “this is a good example” references had seemingly combined the two into one section, which is what I did. I got an automatic 50/100 for not following instructions. (The professor was kind, though, as he let us redo our lowest grades.)

My advice is to actually take the courses elsewhere, preferably from a professor who actually emphasizes COMPOSITION.

How is the nightlife? And the girls? I might be moving to Georgia and I was wondering if you usually stay on campus or go out.

Son trying to decide between GT, Vandy and UVA for BME. Out of state for all. What do you think? Do you feel safe on campus? My main concern visiting was safety at GT. What are the freshman dorms like?

I rarely left campus for two reasons. First, I didn’t have a car. Second, I seldom felt bored or “trapped” on campus. So I’m not the one to answer your question about nightlife.

For the most part, I’d say that the girls at Tech are good looking. Just be bold.

Of the three, I think it’s a no brainer to pick GT for BME. If you “buy” the rankings, [we’re #2](http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-engineering-schools/biomedical-rankings) for BME, tied with UCSD and below Johns Hopkins.

If your son decides that BME isn’t right for him but another engineering field is, again, GT is the best of the three. But, if he has a major change of heart and decides that a humanities or social science field is what he wants to study, well, Vandy and UVA are more comprehensive than GT is. Sure, we have many undergraduate programs besides engineering, but I’m not going to pretend and say that Vandy or UVA aren’t significantly better options to pursue English, econ, history, and so forth.

Regarding safety, there was only one time when I did not feel safe on campus, and it was avoidable. Every Fall semester, a student organization hosts “GT Gamefest” in the Klaus building. The event is from dusk until dawn, but I left “early” at around 1 AM in the morning to walk back to my freshman dorm in West Campus. As I walking along Sixth Street, a guy pulled out of his car, turned around, looked at me, and said, “Oh [four letter word]! What’s up?” I nodded my head and that was that, but I was prepared to take off running at any second.

In the interest of full disclosure, one time during my second year, around 8 PM or so, I walked from my dorm in West Campus to the student center to withdraw some cash from the ATM. As I walked back, a man in his forties approached me and started talking. He told me he lost his wallet in the CRC and quickly transitioned to, “Could I borrow some cash I can catch a taxi? I’ll pay you back.” I declined and that was that. A week or so after this happened, I read an incident in the Campus Crime section of our student newspaper where a student almost surely encountered the same man I did but was not “wise” enough to dismiss the story; the guy got a good haul out of this student, who I’m sure never got his money back.

I note that I didn’t feel scared in my second example. The guy was more of a smooth con than a pugilist, in contrast to the guy in my first example. And there is no college in the nation that is immune from such individuals; I wager that my age group can be “easy pickens” for such folks. I further emphasize that my first situation could have been avoided entirely if I hadn’t been out that late. Overall, setting aside these two incidents, I felt safe on campus during my stay at Tech.

As for freshman dorms, I think the ones in West Campus–especially Folk, Caldwell, Armstrong, and Hefner–are nice. The showers are semi-private, and the rooms are carpeted. Glenn and Towers, two of the most popular freshman dorms in East Campus, can’t say they have either.

What do you mean by semi private showers? And for Glenn and Towers are you saying there is open area for showers/ not private?

A private shower is when you have your own room with a door. A semi-private shower is when there’s a curtain or stall separating. The toilet stalls in a public bathroom are semi-private, for example. Public showers are when there’s nothing between you.

The showers in dorms vary. In all cases, there’s at least a curtain (this is the Glenn and Tower arrangement). The most private you’ll get in a dorm is two curtains (curtain -> changing room -> curtain -> shower). You need to move into Woodruff or an apartment to get a private shower.

I visited last weekend. I walk all over the city and felt very safe. Just like every city there are good parts and bad parts. My son is going, it was a wonderful campus. Good luck in your decision.

this is a general question about GT’s acceptance rates… is it much harder to get into GT’s engineering college than other departments that are not ranked as highly?

And can anyone give me the statistics of acceptance rates for each of the schools in GT?

(I’m already accepted in AE and planning to attend, just want to know out of curiosity)
