Ask a Georgia Tech Sophomore!

Tech has that data (fraction of students going to grad school) but does not release it for some reason. Then again, just releasing salary data is more than the vast majority of schools (and all collect it).

When looking at employment reports, look at Spring numbers. Those are larger classes. Also, if you look at Spring 2010, also look at Spring 2007. 2009 - 2011 is an anomaly and not really representative of what you’ll see 4 years from now. Ivan Allen placement rate in 2007 was 55.2% @ $45,000, in 2010 it was 49.1%. @ $41,500. The other thing to note is the offers / student. In 2007, the average employed grad had 3 job offers to choose from. In 2010, the average employed grad had 1 job offer. That makes a big difference (choosing where you want to work vs. going to where you have to work is very different).

Can you share a link which tells me which companies recruit at tech? (or any other information along those lines, from your knowledge)
Is it more industry oriented than say, UIUC ?

The best list to see who recruits at Tech is at the Career Fair website, which shows who came to campus in 2010: [Georgia Institute of Technology :: Career Fair](http://career.gatech.edu/careerfair/plugins/registration/search.php) That’s not really an all-encompassing list because Tech’s Career Fair is size limited and there’s a 3 year waiting list to get a table for a company trying to come to campus. So the real list is actually larger.

From what I’ve seen, Tech and UIUC engineering are remarkably similar in who recruits there. One thing that’s different is that UIUC tends to have more positions posted in Chicago and the Midwest cornfields whereas Tech tends to have more for Texas and the Southeast.

No google ? Sad.

Google definitely hires at Tech. They set up their own very large booth in the courtyard between the CS buildings. They come with a bunch of people and probably want more room than the Career Fair allows. Either that or they just want to be different.

Banjo – You seem so knowledgeable about GT and your posts are all so helpful, just out of curiosity, what are you studying at GT? How do you come by such useful information? Boy, if all GT students are as smart as you, I’m sure glad my daughter’s going there!

I never said if I am attending, attended, or want to attend. I may or may not know what I’m talking about, so take everything with a grain of salt.

Please congratulate your daughter on her admission.

Banjo, if you don’t know what you’re talking about, you sure do a good job hiding your ignorance.

If I made up the story about Google having a booth in the CS courtyard, would you know?

Banjo said: “I never said if I am attending, attended, or want to attend. I may or may not know what I’m talking about, so take everything with a grain of salt.”

Dang! My daughter accepted to GT based on Banjo’s comments. Looks like she got snookered by the Bernie Madoff of College Confidential!

Unfortunately I haven’t figured out a way to turn CC into a multi-billion dollar venture.

What are BuzzFunds for the meal plan option? I am deciding between the Limited Access 14 (14 meals per week) or the All Access (unlimited). But, they have more BuzzFunds (?) for the LA 14 than they do for the All Access plan. Which is better for a freshman coming from out-of-state?

Honestly, 10 meals a week is all a student needs. Even then, they’ll probably have excess meals.

Buzzfunds basically act like a debit card on campus. So if you have 100 Buzzfunds, you can use that to buy products from anyone that takes Buzzfunds at an exchange rate of 1 Buzzfund = $1. Some (but not all) restaurants on campus take Buzzfunds, the Bookstore takes Buzzfunds, some (but not all) vending machines on campus take Buzzfunds, etc.

At the end of the day, if you get Buzzfunds from a meal plan, that’s a good deal and can be used to lower the cost of books in the first semester. However, you should never buy Buzzfunds beyond that. $1 has more buying power than 1 Buzzfund since Buzzfunds are restricted in where they can be used.

Thanks BanjoHitter,
One more question: where else can I register for classes besides FASET? I am an out-of-state student so do you think going to FASET is worthwhile? So basically, where/when can I register for classes besides FASET?

Is there any advantage to going to an earlier faset?

You register online at oscar.gatech.edu. You should be able to log in and check your registration time ticket. Worst case is that you can always register in the first week of school (but you want to avoid that as the best teachers, classes, and class times will be taken).

The advantage of going to FASET is that they’ll show you how to use systems like OSCAR, but you could always figure that out. Also, at FASET you get to meet other incoming students, which is nice.

@smashace. There is not a benefit to going to an earlier FASET to register. I thought there was when I went but realized you will most likely have a heart attack/meltdown registering anyway. The was registering works at FASET is at each FASET session they only have a certain number of spots in each class opened up. The rest wont open up until the next FASET. The problems comes with at FASET they put you in to groups. Depending on your group number (which is random/semi based on major. Meaning I was with a computing group and therefore got lucky and didn’t have to wait in line for the library and did it in a computer lab) is when you register. YOU WILL NOT GET EVERYTHING YOU WANT. I can almost guarantee you this. I have never seen so many people angry/crying since registration. Haha. People were leaving FASET with 4 hours worth of credit. My suggestion is to get whatever you can that you need/want first, and then fill your schedule (meaning 12 hours or however many you want to take) with classes that you will need eventually (ie. social science credits/humanities. psychology). Phase 11 is magical and you will be able to drop what you have and get what you want if you are a dedicated stalker/refresher.

This was my experience. My password chose not to work for OSCAR and therefor I had to go through a long process that put me very far behind my group (who were all trying to get the same schedule as me). When I went to register there were no MATH 1501 spots, no ENGL 1102 spots. I literally turned in to a blubbering mess and my adviser literally had to build me a schedule that I originally didn’t want consisting of GT1000, PSYCH 1101, Health, CS 1301 and LCC 2700. I never got in to an English class but it was super easy to get in to a Calc class and everything worked out fine! A similar situation happened when registering for the spring semester. I got almost nothing I wanted in Phase 1 but filled a 16 hour schedule with random classes I would need eventually and then overrided/stalked for everything else in Phase II. I got exactly what I wanted.

If you want a good schedule, there are a few tricks:

1) Be a PS, athlete, or a campus tour guide. They register before everyone else (even doctoral students).

2) Come to Tech with a bunch of AP credits (something like 10+). Registration time slots are released by the number of hours you have, and if you have plenty of AP credit you’ll have more hours than most people at your level and will register before them.

3) Find an upper classman who can register before the people at your level. Have him or her register for some of the classes you want. Wait a day or so after you can register (everyone is on OSCAR the day they can first register, it quiets down the next day), have him or her drop the class while you’re in OSCAR, refresh the screen, then register in the newly opened up slot.

I am disappointed to learn about the madness during registration. FASET people are supposed to make things easier for incoming Freshmen. There need to be clear cut directions for registering for classes, once the freshmen get their accounts/passwords etc.

I already paid my deposit to Tech Friday night. So, I’m guessing that they haven’t processed it yet. So, can I register for classes as per the Registrar’s instructions (on the website) as soon as GT processes that I have paid my deposit? I don’t want to join this rat-race for classes during FASET.
