Ask a Hotchkiss Senior Your Questions!

As a current senior going through the daunting college process, I thought it would be nice to come back to prep school admissions and help answer some of your questions.

I applied as a freshmen with a 95 percentile SSAT score. My grades in 8th grade consisted of As and A-s, and my devotion to community service was my personal highlight. I had 6 schools in total on my list and here was the outcome:
Accepted: Hotchkiss, Andover, Deerfield, Choate
Waitlisted: St. Paul's
Rejected: Exeter

I chose to go to Hotchkiss and I'm glad I did. The facilities and faculty members are great! That's not to say that the other schools are poor choices. All of them are exceptional in their own way. One thing I do recommend is visiting the campus, whether you choose to go now or during revisits.

Anyway, enough of that :) If you have any questions, please feel free to ask!

do students get to leave the campus a lot? (since hotchkiss is in a very remote area…)

and if they do, where do they go/what activities do they do?

c’50, your acceptance list is strong. Well done! Why did you select THS over DA? For what it is worth, I found these two schools quite similar in many ways. (NOTE: My son attends Hotchkiss and absolutely loves it!)

@vivsters: Most weekends are open, which means that students simply have to fill out a form (and get permission where needed) and they can leave campus for the weekend. Some students go into the city, some go home, and some go to their friends’ houses. There are a lot of on-campus activities as well though. Every Saturday night, there is something planned. It’s usually a dance, but sometimes we have musicians, magicians and even hypnotists visit :] Wednesday and Saturday afternoons are usually packed with athletic games - school spirit is really strong!

@toombs61: Thank you! :] I selected Hotchkiss over Deerfield, mostly because of its fine facilities and main building concept. I like that the campus is concentrated but not in a confined space. I found it especially convenient (especially in the winter!) that all of the classes (well, except science) were held in the main building, so students don’t have to run from building to building for class.
What grade is your son in? Maybe I know him!

are you a boy or a girl?

Haha, what do you think?

ha girl…?

sid the kid or ovechkin?

c’50: Indeed, many of facilities at Hotchkiss are beautiful, especially the Elfers Auditorium and the Olympic swimming pool. (Note: My son is an upper mid, and he lives in Coy.) Also, “good luck” to you on your college apps. I’m sure that you’ll do well.

@cprowwler50-Based on the fact that You were accepted to a prestigous BS, can You chance me on my proflie? Thanks! It’s-Chance me for Exeter (Final Version)

@deerhotch: ovechkin. don’t quote me on that.

@exeterrr: sure thing! PM me your stats if you’d like :)

so… guy or girl…?

Do you have prom?

How is the location?

Not to be an annoyance by could you chance me? Plaease?

@bbc240: girl :]

@scales1994: It’s beautiful in the fall and spring. Gets all cold and snowy in the winter, but otherwise, I like the location. It’s nice and peaceful.

@Ehphant: We have senior dance, which is the same thing. And sure I can chance you! PM me your stats!

do a lot of people date?

15 percent? Haha not sure

I am interested in Hotchkiss and have a few questions for you

  1. What other schools did u apply to other than Hotchkiss (where were u accepted) and why did u chose Hotchkiss?
  2. About how many hours of homework do you have each night?
  3. Is Hotchkiss really hard? Is it hard to get good grades? were you in the top of your class? and how much harder is it than ur old middle school(did u go to a public or private school)?
  4. What college do you go to now, and do you recommend Hotchkiss to prospective students?
Thank you so much for your time and I look forward to reading your response!

Just graduated, but I thought I could help answer some questions.

Do you have prom?

We have senior dance, but it’s basically prom. It’s really fun, and non seniors can go if they’re invited as dates! We also now have the Blue&White Ball which is also great.

How is the location?
Lakeville, CT is very rural. Coming from NYC, it was a huge culture shock. I definitely didn’t describe myself as outdoorsy, but I’ve had amazing times hiking, seeing amazing views and camping in the Hotchkiss woods. We also have our own farm that’s about a 15-20 minute hike away. Our neighboring town is Millerton, and the school provides a bus service for students to go there. There’s a CVS, Grand Union, a really yummy smoothie place and a ton of restaurants along with a movie theatre. There’s some neighboring towns too that have more to offer, and it’s easy to get there and most teachers are willing to drive you! Also, NYC is simply a 2 hour train ride away, and the train station is about a 20 minute drive!
