I accepted an internship offer with Microsoft to work as a Program Manager (and turned down great companies like Google). I haven't actually started yet.

I figured there might be some people here who had questions about the interview experience, getting an interview, or whatever else.

Feel free to ask me anything you want!

Note: I cross posted this in the engineering section since I figured this might be a different crowd.

I’m also trying to decide between Google and Microsoft for a software development internship. What made your decision? I think I might be a bit more interested in the project I’d work on at Google, but I’d be working at a regional office (whereas I’d be at Microsoft HQ) which might make it a different experience.

In my case, I was deciding between a “Program Manager” internship vs a development/programming internship at Google. One of the reasons I chose Microsoft is because I liked my position and project better. Also, I’ve had several friends that interned at Google. Many of them didn’t seem all that satisfied with their internship and told me that their projects never saw the light of day. At Microsoft, I know the project I’m working on and I know that my work will be going into actual production. Finally, I like how at Microsoft, 85% of the interns are offered full time employment. At Google, I think the number is faaar less (like < 30%). I think the reason for this disparity is that the interview process is more competitive at Microsoft, so the interns are all top notch.

Ari7: It sounds like if you like the project at Google more though, that might be the way to go. The main difference between working at a headquarters vs an alternate location is that there are way more interns at the headquarters. It’s probably more fun to be an intern at the HQ since there are more interns and more events.

Do you know of anyone participating in hardware engineering internships at Microsoft? Are most of these opportunities at the Silicon Valley campus?

Just interviewed for the PM role today. What was your interview like? I feel like I showed that I could think through problems, but I did not necessarily get the answers to the design problems right…how long did it take for you to be notified?

I’m a staff member for my school’s computer science honors society and I’m also a member of TBP (engineering honors society). Also in a poker club and used to be in a theater club. Haven’t done any interesting research, though I worked as a “researcher” for my school’s medical school for a quarter last year. Haven’t worked at all during the last couple school years, though I did work for a test prep company as an SAT teacher for a couple quarters in my sophomore year. I don’t really feel like any of my extra curricular activities are all that awesome or exciting, to be honest. Did that answer what you were looking for?

i sent you a message but I think it will be better if you answer me on this forum so that everyone is able to see your input. I was just offered a PM role in Microsoft at the Redmond campus and am very excited about it. Is it really as competitive as you made it sound in your earlier posts? Were your peers as intelligent as you? How was the experience overall?
