Anyone here considering UMBC? Feel free to ask me questions about what it's like there, classes, campus life, etc....for some information about me

-Humanities Scholar (for more info about that, UMBC: The Dresher Center for the Humanities)

-SAT: 2030 (710 CR, 630 Math, 690 Writing)

Mirabeau: Just curious: what made you choose UMBC over the other colleges? Are you happy with your choice? Which dorms are known to be the nicest? How is the food?

Honestly, my choice really came down to money more than anything- UMBC gave me a nearly free ride ($15,000- i'm an MD resident), and the next cheapest option would have been UMCP at $20,000. I picked UMBC also because it had a nice size (9800 undergrads- not too big, not too small), and seemed to be fairly serious about academics. Yes, it is true that we don't have that much of a party scene, but that's because (at least I'd think) that the average UMBC student tends to be a bit more academically serious than ones at other Maryland schools (esp. Salisbury, Towson, and to some extent UMD).

I can say that I don't regret my choice for a moment, I love it here--the people, the professors, everything. The classes are very challenging (even in the liberal arts, which we aren't known for), and it is very easy to get to know your professors.

Best dorms are Harbor and Erickson--they're configured as suite style, so having that extra common room space is quite nice (though I should say that, at every UMBC dorm, only two rooms share a bathroom--we have no communal bathrooms like you'd find at most schools). People who don't live in Harbor and Erickson say that there isn't so much of a community atmosphere because we aren't as packed in, but, I find that's not really true--my floor still socializes a lot (I'm in Harbor).

Food's alright, honestly...I mean, cafeteria food, what can you expect, lol. We are getting a Chick-Fil-A and a Starbucks next semester, that, combined with all the fast food type places we've got in the Commons (read: student union), means you've got a fairly good selection of choices.

Hi!
I got my acceptance letter to UMBC a couple weeks ago and then was later notified that I received the Presidents Fellow award ($5000) I know UMBC is a great school and am seriously considering, but money is an issue for me.

When I first sent my application to UMBC it had my first SAT scores in it and thats what my decision was based on, but I took the SAT one last time this past December and my scores significantly approved. Is there any way to see if I might be offered more money now with these scores? Should I call an ask?

Here are my stats:

GPA: 3.96 unweighted 5.208 weighted
My first SAT scores went from 2050 (710 CR 570 Math 770 Writing)
to December scores 2140 (730 CR 640 Math 770 Writing)
Top 5% of class

sorry I know this is not a what is UMBC like question, but if you know anything, I'd appreciate it?

I'm not entirely sure if they would be able to do something about that, they tend to stick to their decisions once they've made them. It wouldn't hurt to call the Scholarships and Financial Aid office, they might be able to help--no guarantees on that, though. However, I know several people who were in the same boat as you (me being one of them), who had excellent GPAs but because of one subpar SAT subscore (in this case your math, as it was for me), didn't get a higher award.

Did you apply for any of the specialty scholarship programmes?

No I didn't because I'm really interested in the pre-pharmacy program and at UMBC it requires me to stay for at the least 2 or 3 years to finish the requirements. The speciality programs at least Meyerhoff requires at least 4. I talked to a meyerhoff student planning on doing pharmacy and she advised me not to go with meyerhoff.
I did talk to one of the undergrad admission counselor before I applied and she said that any new SAT scores would be forwarded to the scholarship office for consideration. I emailed her again and am hoping she'll let me know if its possible.

thanks though, I'll wait to see if she has any insight and then I might contact the scholarship office because I've heard its been done before.

Just an update, I emailed one of the scholarship directors and they reconsidered my application. Now they are offering me the Premier scholarship which is $15,000!

I am currently a sophomore in HS who is starting to browse the topic of colleges. Even as an out of state resident, I wish to go to school is maryland and eventually reside there. I have had my sights set on JHU since I was six (basically because I played lax), but had a quick question.

If you were to rank the following school in order of strength, what would they be? JHU, U of MD CP, Towson, and UMBC. I know you are a tad biased seeing you are a student at UMBC, but I really appreciate this. Thanks for your time, mburgos13

mburgos, if you want my opinion:
JHU, CP, UMBC
but keep in mind UMBC is more sciency
I am a MD resident and in my county most of the kids go to either CP or UMBC

In all honesty, it's there, yes, we can get excited when our teams do well or play, but it's not on the level that you might find at College Park or Penn State or some school like that. I admit that the stereotype about UMBC being a nerd school is wholly true, but don't let that get you down. Overall, it's still a great school, and shows that athletics do not make a school what it really is.

If you were to throw Loyola into the mix, how would you rate umd cp, loyola, towson, and umbc. I know its annoying, but it is greatly appreciated.

Oh i just remembered something else i wanted to ask. How approachable are the students here and how would you rate the attractiveness of girls on campus? Students review had some votes for attractiveness of girls on campus so im just curious.

So from your original post, it says you are a humanities scholar. I'm hoping to apply for that scholarship next year with an intended major in Media & Communication Studies with a minor in English and philosophy. I did not do that well my freshman and sophomore year of high school and due to that , my cumulative GPA is now 3.09. However my GPA for my junior year is a 3.8 with AP and honor courses. Would you say that is enough to get the scholarship?

From what I've read on UMBC's website and from student reviews it sounds perfect for me. Does everyone in the Humanities Scholars Program have an extremely high high school GPA? Are there any tips you can give me to help me get the scholarship? Any high school courses I should take? Extracurriculars I should be involved in? I want this sooo bad!

Johns Hopkins (Grampa went there, he is the smartest person i know)

UMD (This is where all the kids in HS want to go, and its stupid that instate kids get rejected all the time, the town really really sucks)

Loyola (Its really expensive!)

UMBC (I had 2 teachers who went here, one was the best teacher i have ever had, and he is BRILLIANT!!, and the other is very smart too, i know alot of ethnic kids choose this schools because of the scholorships and because there is a huge minority popuation, personally i LOVE batimore, but its defintly not for everyone.)

Towson (Please don't go here, its really like a community college, having said that its a OKAY option if you are instate)

UMBC gives away alot off scholarships, and when i say alot, i MEAN ALOT, i hear the science dept. is great.

Hello, I have to decide between attending UMBC or George Mason. I am a Virginia resident so I will have to pay out-of-state tuition if I were to go to UMBC. UMBC's out-state-tuition is $13,000 more than what I would pay at George Mason. That's a lot of money for my parents but they are fine with paying it, through loans and such. I am very attracted to UMBC's small population and campus but most importantly their biology program. You see, I'm planning on majoring on biology and I've heard that UMBC has an excellent biology program. So is it worth it ($$) for me to attend UMBC for these reasons? In your opinion how do you feel about UMBC's biology program compared to that of George Mason's?

-On another note: Do you know the g.p.a's and SAT scores of incoming freshmen, not the whole pool of applicants who got in. The reason I ask is because other websites have differing and nonconsistent averages of student's g.p.a. and SAT scores.
