Ask A Second Year International Student

Hi, I'm a second-year student from the UK. Ask me questions about life at UChicago!

quick question. my nephew will be applying from overseas.

What happens during the break between quarters or thanksgiving break for international students who are not going back home. It’s too short a break to find private alternate housing. Are some dorms open for international students?

For that matter, what happens during the summer. Are any dorms open for international students or are they on their own to find summer housing?

science fiction – all dorms close over the breaks between quarters (so, Christmas break, Spring break), except for South Campus. It does close over the summer, though. In fact, everyone needs to remove all of their belongings from the dorms for summer break because teams/ programs use them for housing.

International students are encouraged to ask friends who live in South Campus if they can stay in their rooms over the inter-quarter breaks, and there are a variety of other options for the summer.
I went home with a friend over Spring Break last year, and subletted an apartment with other students (which is also really easy!) over the summer. Many of my international friends also lived in International House: [International House at the University of Chicago](http://ihouse.uchicago.edu/)

Were there any opportunities you could not take advantage of as an international student? Internships, jobs, research opportunities?

thanks for answering my question!

solhari – there really weren’t, although it can sometimes be confusing in terms of finding employment when you don’t have a social security number. This is a really good resource for looking for jobs as an International Student: https://internationalaffairs.uchicago.edu/

Thank you for answering our questions. Excellent resource!
