sadly, nancyfbi, calc I and WTE are both mostly taught by grad students, so it will probably be luck of the draw. Lieberman is really good, but he's also hard. I think the other econ profs are rumored to be easier, but not as funny.

Well... I wanted to ask recommendations for Calc II...

But none of them have good reviews on ratemyprofessors.com :(

(And the most popular class is taught by "Staff," which means everybody basically hates all the other teachers...)

Yeah, WTE and the calc courses are generally taught by adjuncts or grad students, so you won't know who the heck you're getting. Just sign up for the classes that best fit your schedule.

I am having trouble getting cleared to take calc 1 first semester (im gonna be in stern)..apparantly they prefer you to have a 700-750 on the sat math 1 which i dont have...I also very foolishly didnt take the calc ap test because I knew I couldnt place out of it so i didnt see a purpose.

On albert when registering it says

PREREQ: THREE OR FOUR YEARS OF HIGH SCHOOL MATH
WHICH INCLUDE PRECALCULUS WITH AN "A" OR CALCULUS
WITH A "B" GRADE

i meet the requirements above but when i called the math department they were giving me a rough time......any advice you guys? i faxed ovber my transcript and they are gonna get back to me but i was wondering if anyone else had been in a similar situation and if they managed to get out of taking precalc.

thanks for any comments or suggestions

superman, talk to your academic advisor. They can place you into the class, blocks or no blocks, if you're qualified.

Worst comes to worst, take a placement exam and prove that you know your Calc I.

shades when i talked to the adviser he said that it is at the descretion of the math department.. but i guess i will see : ( all the calc classes are prolly gonna be filled by the time i hear anyways

when is an advisor alloted to you?

I am sick of NYU's math department too.
They are not helpful at all.....

you know what? I am already thinking about transfering even though I haven't even started nyu yet.

superman, is there any reason why you MUST take Calc II right off the bat? Maybe you could consider taking another required course instead while you work out the difficulties with the math department.

merumerume, don't give up hope. NYU's math department is well-known for being hard to deal with. Don't take it personally - rather, become more determined not to let the math department get the better of you! :D

you're already thinking about transferring from NYU??? LOL. ME TOO!!! but it's because of different reasons than annoyance with the math department...

but when i looked over certain transfer apps from 2005, it seemed like a really difficult process. you need new recommendations from professors as well as your high school counselor, and new ECs. there's no way my counselor would remember me in a year... so i doubt i will transfer.

Is it difficult to double major in Finance and Accounting? How many courses would that be? I might be transferring there for Fall '07 as a Junior.

I thought you could take tats first term and Calc second term, but I guess you can't. I instead signed up for Calc I with Professor Chen, who has a spectacular 1.1 on RateMyProfessors...class is supposed to be pretty easy at least, I've already taken Calc..

That SAT stuff is pretty moronic, seeing as SATs don't mean jack (though its why I'm in Stern and not at Tepper or wherever).

Taking Calc II later than first term would be pretty suboptimal because you would either have to take it at the same time as Stats or as an upperclassmen, which would prevent you from taking Microecon freshman year if I'm not mistaken.

The Finance/Accounting major is something I looked into...it appears to be rediculously easy to double major or major/comajor at Stern, so that should be pretty feasible, providing all the other courses line up.

It depends what kind of accounting you're looking in. General accounting is 12 credits, so a finance/gen accounting double major should be ok. However, CPA accounting is 23 credits, so CPA and finance will exceed 128 credits.

how are class schedules spread out in stern? is it common to have an hour break between each class?

IVYPoison - no, NYU doesn't give you hour long breaks in between. If you look at class times on Albert, you'll see that there's usually 15 min after each class period to get to your next class. Of course, if you don't schedule classes back to back, you can have long breaks in your day, but why would you? Just keep your common hour (12:30-1:45) free because that's when most clubs meet.

Is This Bad?

What is the significance of 128 semester units? Do they give one degree or two for double-major? Is it possible to take classes over the summer? Is there a max for summer classes?

I found this: http://w4.stern.nyu.edu/accounting/academic.cfm?doc_id=1708

so it seems possible to double-major in CPA and Finance, but it adds up to 137 semester units...

i thought you should put classes together as much as possible, but still have time to study and relax, or do homework in between, so your day won't be hectic, running from class to class.
this is my schedule:
MW
9:30- 10:45
2:00-3:15
3:00-4:45 only Wedn
6:20-8:00

TR
8:00-9:15 RCT only Thurs
9:30-10:45

my tuesdays and thursdays' afternoons would be free, and i would have 3-day weekends. of course, i might need to work-study and so there's not much free time. but i think i made a pretty good schedule.

if anyone has advice on scheduling, please let me know!

Mine:

W:
0930AM-1045AM
MW:

R:

TR:

Well the breaks are open for me to do homework, prep for next classes eh? I think this is the best i can do to ensure that i still take the classes i want to take.
