Ask a Student - Anything

efollett;

On the left, click textbooks and course materials. it shows the books for most classes in autumn quarter. a lot of intro sems, IHUM, etc. aren’t up yet though.

i like that stanford doesn’t unnecessarily change its books every single year for everything

Thank you, NJDS. Looks like some courses use web-based books, which is always good.( I think in a few more years most textbooks will be on the web, and free.) I wonder when the IHUM and IntroSem books will go up.

As far as downloading, I download stuff on limewire back home on a separate computer. When at Stanford if I find I’m in need of a song I youtube it, record it off youtube into audacity, and then export it from audacity into itunes. Avoids having to get limewire on my new laptop and use it on the Stanford network, which although you’ll probably get away with but they may get upset.

I did stream football and basketball games though, and never heard a word. It’s their fault really for being in a California TV market and not offering free NFL sunday ticket to students.

So in short, you probably can download off limewire and be fine, although there are alternative methods that they can’t do anything about.

hey! i’m going to be a sophomore next year, stanford’s my #2 school (harvard being my first choice b/c of it’s med program). i live in cali, and if i apply with the following stats early decision, do i have a chance IF i end up with these stats? I’m pretty sure I can accomplish the following (hopefully… fingers crossed!)

captain of the current #1 Cross Country team in state, varsity runner
-3 years of coaching tween girls and helping them overcome their self-confidence through running+ grant work for the program
-president of my school’s science journal
-president/founder of a club, helps special ability kids through theater
-4.0 student freshman year, 4.5 sophomore year (i’m taking precalc honors, ap chem, ap world, english H, spanish 4, and ISPE), 4.8 junior year (ap bio, ap us, calc ab, ap spanish, ap lang, and intro to journalism) and senior year (ap physics, ap lit, calc cd, and 2 other classes?) basically, the hardest courses my school offers. I got all A’s and a few A+'s frosh year…
-MUN 4 years
-SAT over 2200
-Science fair 2 years (it’s mandatory for ap chem students, so it’s for sure that i’ll do it, no idea how well i’ll do)
-Indian classical dance for 9 years, i assist my teacher as well + multiple performances around my community
and -majoring in biology (I want to be a cardiologist!)
Is this enough? If not, what else can I do? I’m entering my sophomore year, so there’s still time to add on Also, how many community service hours will I need, approximately? I’d volunteer near the local universities, but I’m still 14, so they won’t let me. I have absolutely no idea how many hours I’ll do once I get the chance, but i’ll do key club as well, starting next year. I’m doing the brain bee, so if I do well there, then I can add that as well.

that is a well written and organized post, but this is not the place for it. I recommend posting it in the “Chance Me” section.

Did it once with a math course (210A); that was the only time. I talked to the instructor about it beforehand, and he gave me a mild recommendation against it, but I did it anyway, and it turned out to be the right choice.

With a few exceptions, always. The exceptions are introsems and a handful of other popular courses.

You can still have a great time in a 4-class dorm. Ask anyone who’s lived in Twain in the last 5-6 years. It’ll just be a bit different.

random question…
they say that we get TV channels 1-12…does anyone know which ones those are?

https://itservices.stanford.edu/service/cabletv/stv/roomlineup

@xargon- whoops… it said ask a student anything. sorry :frowning: is it possible to delete posts?hahaha… this is awkward…

^Don’t worry about it. In fact it’s really a logical place to post because of all current and future ('14) Stanford students who roam it. The thread title is ambiguous, but for a while this thread has been about admitted/incoming students (maybe even applicants too, I don’t go on here during the school year) asking specific questions about Stanford: like how the food is, what classes are good, etc. No way you could have known that though for sure without reading through a few pages. One slight tip-off is that it’s in the 2014 forums.

BTW I should add that Twain last year was all-frosh, and I think it is this year too. So don’t get confused '14ers.

Do you know if Alondra (or just EastFlo) has cinderblock or smooth walls? I want to use chalkboard contact paper but it won’t work if the walls are rough.

@applicanot: if you want to remain anonymous, i would refrain from posting the same things on CC and on facebook :)

^ haha I noticed that too

Thanks for the heads up, but I’m far from anonymous on these boards.

Hi there! I am so happy that this thread is here because Stanford is my dream school. Harvard? Psh, I want to go to Stanford lolz

I’m only a sophomore in High School now, so I still have time to worry about colleges (phew) but I am worried. I have really high grades and all, but I’m worried about everything else: what extracurriculars should I do? Do I need to do a whole bunch of sports to look good on the application? (Honestly, I’m more of an academic person and am hoping to become a biomedical engineer).

So those are my questions. What extracurriculars and any other advice you can give to make appliciants seem more impressive and raise the likelihood of getting in?

^do whatever EC’s you enjoy. No you don’t need a whole bunch of sports or really any sports, as long as you do something with your time. The best advice I can give is to do what you love to do and give everything your full effort. There is no secret formula for getting in. There are hundreds of other threads devoted to that topic in the normal Stanford section.

I just have three questions:

Where do you keep your suitcases in your dorm? Under your bed?

How do you keep your laptop safe? Do students have a lock box of some sort?

Kind of links to my second questions. Do any of the drawers in your dorm have locks on them to keep valuables?

Thanks!

im in the same boat as you, but these are my plans (just to throw them out there)

  1. im going to keep them under my bed
  2. you can buy a laptop lock. the type depends on the type of laptop. It fits into a hole-type thing in most laptops and locks by Key. you can then attach it to your desk so that people cant pull ur laptop away from your desk.
But i’m also going to keep some things in my luggage bag and put a lock on it.
  3. Nope

Where do you keep your suitcases in your dorm? Under your bed?
Yeah or in the closet.

How do you keep your laptop safe? Do students have a lock box of some sort?
The laptop lock is one option, but really there isn’t much laptop theft from rooms. It’s a good idea to definitely keep it locked over breaks or when a lot of people are out of the dorm (like on a dorm trip) and such.

Kind of links to my second questions. Do any of the drawers in your dorm have locks on them to keep valuables?
The above poster had a good idea to lock stuff in luggage. You could probably add a lock to the drawer if you’re good with things like that but you’ll probably have to pay for it (a new drawer). Better just to bring a safe, although I did not hear of any room-thefts in my dorm.

^ It’s a good idea to get one of those big, collapsible wheeled duffel bags. They flatten out when they’re empty so they are easy to store, and they can be crammed with an amazing amount of stuff for traveling because they have soft sides.
