Ask a Student

I’ll also be making phone calls to confirm, answer questions, etc. Just thought an email would break the ice and get things rolling.

So has everyone accepted been sent the email?

No. There have been issues with a few of the email addresses. We took the addresses from the University database not the one we maintain. The person who has that on his computer happens to be out of town at the moment. So, I’ll start to make phone calls late tomorrow afternoon to get in touch with those who we haven’t sent email to.

Also, if you have applied but the University has NOT yet accepted you there is a delay while we move through that process.

We also will not send out the wait list until late next week.

If you send me a direct email to my departmental address I can tell you where you stand at this moment in time.

My D got an email yesterday. Thank you so much for the ice breaker! Of all the programs, we walked away feeling this is where she connected, but dared not hope too hard in case an invitation was not extended. The auditions were so organized, and loved the fact staff and students were so available, and involved in every aspect of the different elements of the audition. (examples, instructors came to watch final run of the dance audition instead of just dance staff). Time was taken to get to know the kids and families…I was impressed with this effort…how smart to really see who you will be working with. thanks again.

My D is also thrilled. She loved the audition day, the students and the campus and also walked away with a good feeling. She is very excited! Thank you! :-)

My D got her email today and is thrilled!! Can’t say enough positive things about kjgc and all his help in this process. Thank you!!!

how many how many freshman were given invitation for the class of 2010? What will be the expected class size for the BFA program?

I heard they are aiming for 5 girls, 5 boys and have a small waitlist. Which makes me feel amazing, haha. But with kjgc here I don’t even know why I’m answering. He knows for certain, haha.

I lied, maybe. Just looking through previous posts from kjgc and he said last year they were hoping for a class of 16. Ignore previous post, but I can’t edit/delete it anymore. Dang College Confidential! Can’t edit. :)

AlexaMT is my new spokesperson.

We have skewed downward and are indeed looking for approximately 10. No M to F ratio is being sought this year. Although our goal would be an even split, we aren’t really that concerned. Our initial group of people who have accepted the invitations to enter the program have been evenly split.

We sent out a total of 26 acceptance letters for Acting and Musical Theatre. At least a few of those will choose another path. The wait list is very short indeed. We would rather have an ensemble that comes together beautifully than to meet a target number.

Our goal for Fall 2011 will be 12 in MT, 12 in Acting, 8-10 in Physical Theatre (first BFA in the U.S. of its kind) and 10 in the Design and Tech program. By Fall 2012 we will have a degree in Theatre Management. We will always try to keep the classes to no more than 12.

Make sense? Hope so. Let me know if you have other questions.

Hehe I won’t answer any more questions without knowing for sure. Very excited! The Physical Theatre program looks ridiculously amazing, too.

Thank you for the info. Sounds like much effort went into the makeup of the program.

Anyone else make the decision to attend CCU? My D is so excited to be a part of the program!

yep…my D also very excited to be done with the whole audition process and to have been accepted to such a wonderful program…she cannot wait until fall…bad case of “senioritis” goin on here!!

Is it possible that somebody could give me an overview of a BFA MT major? I’ve been trying to find information about the school, but the only thing I could find was the actual school website. I’m in the process of deciding which colleges I’m auditioning for, so if someone could provide information about a day in the life, class sizes, what classes, equal training in singing, acting, and dancing, teachers, successful alumni, and just whatever you want to say, pro or con wise, about the program would be VERY beneficial!

Hi! I’m a BFA Musical Theatre freshman (almost sophomore) and I’d be happy to answer any specific questions you have about the program.

The website for the theatre department is [CCU Department of Theatre](Theatre - Coastal Carolina University)

There’s a lot of good information on there including news, overview on the course study, faculty bios, etc. As for the other information you’re looking for…

This is a link to a “Day in the Life” thread on CCU that I’ve posted in twice that lists what our days are like at CCU (both my first semester of freshmen year and second semester):
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/musical-theater-major/1067706-freshman-experience.html

As for class size, they are typically looking for 10 for each program. 10 MT, 10 Acting, 10 Physical Theatre, and 10 Design/Tech. With MT and Acting they are divided equally with 5 boys and 5 girls. Often I know they will offer around 7 boys and 6 girls in order to try and get that 10, and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. We also operate on a waitlist system so if people deny and we are under 5 girls or boys, we will offer spots to people off the waitlist. This year we saw around 600 including the big unified auditions, but 250-300 of them were specifically auditioning FOR Coastal.

Any other specific questions that aren’t answered from the above links, please let me know and I’ll be happy to help.

First of all, thank you so much for replying! I went to the CCU website and I saw that on the sample sheet, that you take one dance class a semester about. Do you feel like that’s enough? For example, do you think or have your alumni been cast in ‘dance’ shows like chorus line and 42nd street?

Also, from what I read in the day in the life post, this seems like an amazing school! I’m seriously considering going here!

It is possible to take more than one dance class a semester, I suppose, but it’s set up to take one a semester for our curriculum. We do not have a specific dance department at CCU, so as of now there are only level 1 and 2 classes, but that doesn’t mean that we do not get the training that we need. We are building into level 3 classes right now as more talent comes in (more trained dancers especially) and there are more than just classes. I have grown immensely from the few actual courses I’ve taken already, and there are many opportunities in addition that add to our dancing.

We have dance company which is open to sophomores and up (auditions would be at the end of the freshman’s first year) which is an extra level 300 course and includes showcases. This is for the strongest dancers in the department and there are outside performances around the community as well as at the school. We also have many mock dance auditions through out the year taught by Barbara Hartwig (who choreographs for the SETC auditions every year) for simple choreography memorization practice so we can pick up routines quickly and get them right.

In addition, we have many master classes. We had a hip hop instructor come in quite a few times to keep us up to date on more modern dance styles, especially with shows like In the Heights popping up all the time now. Garth Fagan and his company also came in a few weeks ago and held a master class with a lot of the upperclassmen which I heard was absolutely amazing, and quite a honor to have them not only come in and give a performance but teach our students. Great connections.

We currently have an alumni from 2 years ago who was a swing on the Legally Blonde national tour, and is continuing on the tour as Dance Captain when it goes to Asia this summer. I also know of a male alum who just finished up a job as Al in “A Chorus Line” at the Armory and and a girl who finished “White Christmas” in the dance ensemble at Walnut Street Theatre over Christmas- so, yes! Many dancers working. Although our alumni base is smaller than a lot of schools, it is very strong and successful especially when you compare that to how long we have been around as a department, especially with the BFA only being recently created. We work!

Many people walk into CCU with little or no technique and have grown completely and are often cast as dancers first, and strong dancers continue to add to their skills and fix any issues they may have with technique while being here.

I hope this answers your question. So glad you’re looking at CCU!

Wow! The main reason I asked that question was because one of the main things I’m looking for in schools is the true ‘triple threat’ training, so thank you so much for answering that! I think I’m really looking into this school now! I’m really excited to get this part of my life started!!! Looking at all of the course work for all of the schools I want to go to makes me so anxious to start the audition process haha!

On the website, it says that talent Scholarships are $6500 a year. Have they ever offered more than that? For those of us who got into the University, but not with Merit Scholarship, talent money is the only one left. Assuming we get accepted into the MT program that is.
