Ask a UCLA Psych Major (Transfer) anything!

Hey guys,

I'm from the class of 2011 and just finishing my second quarter at UCLA, if you have any questions (Psych specific of otherwise!) feel free to ask them here!

what were your stats when you transferred?

3.8 w/ TAP - accepted to all top UCs.
ECs = Rugby, Pres of CC Psych Club, TA at CC

how are your grades at ucla??

I have a 3.4 right now. 100a and b are GPA busters though so I expect that to rise this quarter.

Should I give up hope because of a 3.43 GPA, no tap and only 100 hours of community service and a job since October 09

I had no community service on my application. If you had TAP your GPA would have been okay but I feel like you might be a little bit lower. Do you have any extenuating circumstances? Military history? If so you might have a good chance. UCLA is very competitive though, especially within the psychology major.

UCLA likes military history? I didn’t want to bank on that, esp. with UCLA or Cal.

Yes they do. Plus its a great choice for veterans as we have the vet center right across from UCLA.

I’ve been down there several times! Just worried that I won’t be able to handle the traffic from the SFV to UCLA. Very few things make me more tense than traffic!!

Well, I’m not a psych major, but thanks SimonPhase!

I’ve been thinking about UCLA to transfer for Fall 2011, for Psychology as well, actually.

And I have a couple of questions. If you can answer them (preferably in a PM because I might have some difficulty finding this thread a few days from now…), that would be absolutely wonderful! :D

The type of psychology I’m interested in is more geared towards helping people (counseling, children and/or teens, school, etc.) rather than major research oriented (like becoming a doctor/researcher. HUGE props to them, but I can not handle all of the bio, chem, calc, etc. :frowning: ). What is the Psychology program/major like at UCLA? What are some of the classes and programs available? What are the transfer housing options?

Just some general questions…and please include anything that you think might be helpful! I appreciate it so much! :D

BTW, I know it’s a tad early to project…but I’m thinking that by the time I transfer my GPA will be about a 3.6-3.8 (more towards the 3.6 end…). I current got involved in the Environmental club (and actively participating) and next semester I will be in the Phi Theta Kappa organization (a community college honor society). I donate blood everytime I can. I don’t have a job, but I’m hoping to get one in the relative future. By the looks of it, would I have a possible chance? Criticism is appreciated, I don’t want to waste my dad’s money if there is not chance of appeptance.

Thank you again!

How are UCLA psych classes compared to Psych 1/101 at CC? How are the classes structured? How much Statistics are you expected to know when you get there?

Is physics really required for psych majors at UCLA?

Nikker - send me a PM with the same questions and I’ll get back to you. Housing can be found online. UCLA has multiple different directions you can take your educational experience in - including developmental/counseling etc. Check out Scott Johnson’s Babylab.

Ioi - alot more reading but essentially the same type of testing. Alot of psych classes require papers though. 100b especially, thats a 20 page paper.

RileyJohn - Yes it is.

How many units should a transfer student take during their first Qtr at UCLA?

Do professors at UCLA provide study guides for exams?

Hey SimonPhase, thanks a lot for doing this.

I’m interested in UCB and UCLA equally, so should I get into both, I really don’t know which to choose, so this might help give me some perspective.

I’m looking for a research oriented career, primarily in cognition and neuroscience. I wanted to know what sort of research opportunities are there at UCLA? And how can I get involved with things like internships and the like? We don’t have anything like that at the CC level, and most internships I’ve come across have been geared toward bio/biotech, so I’ve had no luck in finding anything to do with psych.

and rileyjohn: I believe an intro to chem or physics class is required.

JC1029 - I would say between 12 and 14. Its better not to do more than 3 classes in your first quarter.

Some of them do, some of them don’t. It all just depends on the professor. Alot of classes are podcasted on bruincast though and profs will often put their powerpoint lectures online which kind of doubles as a study guide. We also have the testbank! You can access lots of old tests from multiple classes there.

^ Thanks for the useful info! I’ve been told by others to not take more than 3 classes during the first Qtr…I guess there’s a lot of truth behind it.

drwatson - Those are both great schools and I was faced with the same decision. I honestly believe UCLA was the better choice. Not only is the campus amazing, close to the beach, warm all year round and used in multiple TV shows annually but it is also home to an awesome Psych department. We have some amazing professors in the psych department. It sounds like you may be more interested in Psychobio though. There is a much greater neurological influence in that field which will open up many more doors to the UCLA psychiatry department. (The Psychiatry department is located at UCLA Ronald Reagan and is one of the reasons why Ronald Reagan is best in the west and #3 nationally.) Research opportunities come up all the time! Just get good grades in 100a and b, make friends with a professor and they will be very open to giving you research opportunities. It is also a requirement of the UCLA psych degree to take at least 1 lab section.

You can also check out some of the lectures from psych professors online on Bruincast.

JC1029 - Definitely, I’m pretty sure the department caps you at 2 psych classes when you transfer anyway. Your first quarter will look something like this…

Psych 100 a or b (depending on if you take Psych 100a over summer - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED)
Psych Elective - Try something easy for your first quarter, something from column “b” (This is the more social psych side of things)
Upper Div Elective - I took CHS 179 - Its a “life skills” class that almost guarantees you an A so its a fantastic GPA booster.

Having a course load like this allows you to focus on 100a or b (You are required to get a C or above to pass (C- = a fail for 100a and b) While this may seem easy it is extremely hard to get a good grade in either of these classes and they are commonly known as GPA busters. You can only retake them twice in total before you are barred from the Psych major)
