Ask a UMass Student

@2collegehopes you will get in but i don’t think you’ll get into the business program

@quadmom1997 The main items of concern I had was my laptop, my phone, money/ID things and medication. I pretty much always had my laptop and phone with me. I kept them under my sheets if my roommate wasn’t in the room and I had to go to the bathroom or something. I kept my ID stuff with me and buried my spare cash in an envelope and layers of clothing. Meds were kept in a small pouch in the back of a drawer. Roommate had similar practices.

Honestly, a lot of it does come down to the people living in the room. My roommate and I always double-checked that our door was locked when we left the room and when we slept. If we had friends over one of us was always in the room with them. I’d really only recommend extra security items for the room if you’re living in the towers. It seems like most of the thefts happened there last year.

How rigorous are academics at Umass?

It depends on your major and the classes you take. I’m a CS major and I remember my freshman year being quite easy. But throughout the years, courses get progressively more difficult as you become more concentrated in your major. But everything is still manageable.

Hi, I am currently a freshman at another university and am looking to transfer to UMA in the fall of 2016. Could a student at UMA tell me about the CS program there? What is it like? Do you like it? I am currently attending Roger Williams for Cs but so far haven’t had a good vibe for the way classes and education works here. What do you like about UMA?

What is life like for gay students at UMass? I’m a gay student and I’m worried about if the student body is accepting. Thanks!

@achap123 Is it easy to maintain a 3.7+ for the Bay State Fellowship?

@Ztarantino I have a bunch of friends in the CS major, but overall, people say it’s really rigorous, which I guess can be a good thing. We’ve got a really great program here. I love the diversity as well as the social life here. I’ve made a lot of friends, and the university does a really good job at keeping students busy. There’s always something going on, whether it’s a basketball game, a festival, a concert, free skate nights, a play… There is never a dull night!

@caoue2016 UMass is super duper accepting. Everyone’s really friendly, and no one cares about someone else’s sexual orientation. You won’t be judged, you won’t be ostracized. There is a really large LGBT+ community and everyone is wicked accepting.

@blaugrana9 : It all depends on your major and on your work ethic. It’s certainly possible, my roommate scored a 3.9 this semester, but it’s not exactly easy. Classes are pretty rigorous depending on the major.

Hi,Thanks for all the info you’ve offered thus far. My question is, when are students notified if they are accepted into the Honors program at UMASS? Does it arrive with the original acceptance letter?

My D is accepted and we will be visiting on Accepted Students Day tomorrow. She was admitted to the Business program. She is a social person, but serious about her school work. Which dorm do you suggest she
look at while she is there. She does not seem too fond of Southwest Dorm.

jcort1-- maybe D should look at Orchard Hill. Not science nerdy like Northeast, or stoner–chill like Central. S know lots of nice, typical kids who live there or have lived there.

Thnx MaDad, on our way there shortly for Accepted Students Day!

@jcort1 I live on the Hill and I love the environment. I haven’t met too many Isenberg students here, but the Hill is the one place anyone can fit in.

How good is the Honors program? And, would you suggest joining an honors RAP?
Also, is it extremely difficult for international students to find internships?

Does UMASS have a Foreign Language requirement? I cant seem to find the answer on the website.

^ AFAIK there is no university-wide language requirement other than needing 2 units (one year) of a foreign language in high school as an admissions requirement.

Each college within the university, and sometimes individual degrees within each college, have their own degree requirements, which may or may not include a foreign language requirement.

For example, in the College of Humanities and Fine Arts, a B.A. degree has a FL requirement, although it can be satisfied in various ways. B.S. degrees have no FL requirement.

https://www.umass.edu/hfa/foreign-language-requirement

As another example, the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences has a FL requirement which requires actually taking courses:

https://www.umass.edu/sbs/global-education-requirement

The College of Engineering has no FL requirement.

You need to drill into the page(s) for your major.

Thank you!

Any idea when Freshman Move In date is? Couldnt find it on UMASS site?

@jcort1 Freshman move in day is usually the Friday before Labor Day so it would be Sept 2nd this year.

from experience, how would current umass students say the financial aid at the school is? Are they generous?& when should I expect to recieve a financial aid award?
