I know it's getting to be about that time where decisions are going to be made. Around this time last year, I had a lot of questions about UNC and was thankful that many people on this board were able to help me out and make my decision easier. I thought that I'd try to return the favor. If anyone has any ( I mean any!) questions about life at UNC, I will try my best to answer them. Just to give you basic information about me: I live in Hinton James, I'm out of state (Illinois) and I'm Jewish.

So, please don't hesitate to ask anything on your mind.

What do you think of the academics at UNC (really hard, manageable, etc.)? How many hours do you spend studying a week?

What do most students do on weekends?

Where do you recommend living? Next year there will be more opportunities for freshmen to live on N. Campus. Do you recommend trying to get a dorm on N. Campus or S. Campus?

Being an out of state student is no different from being an in state student. I once heard that the in staters were not very fond of the out of staters because of their generally higher grades/scores. That's far from the truth. Telling someone you're out of state only gets you a friendly conversation of where you're from. The one difference is the beginning of the year when meeting new people. Naturally, in staters will hang out with their high school friends and out of staters will sort of bond together at first. That's how it was for me but not very long after I became great friends with my suitemates. The idea that out of staters are smarter than in staters is false too. Some of the smartest people I know are in state and are definitely smarter than I am.

"What do you think of the academics at UNC?"

Really depends on the courses you take. Generally though, most classes are challenging but manageable. Most of the courses I've taken have been challenging and quite an adjustment from high school but the workload hasn't been too bad. Studying hours depends on the week, some are heavier than others but I usually spend a few hours per night.

"What do most students do on weekends?"

It's hard to say what most students do since students do a wide variety of things. There's really something for everyone on the weekends. This year has been 2 very different semesters for me. First semester I didn't drink very much and found some people I could just hang out with on weekends. We would watch movies, play board games, hang out late at night on Franklin street and get ice cream, go to concerts..whatever. There is plenty to do if you don't drink and it's not hard to find people who don't. Second semester I've been getting more into the drinking/partying scene. That usually involves going to a frat/house party or just staying in the dorm sometimes. Again, if you're into partying it won't be hard to find. Lots of people like to go to the clubs, especially Players. I'm not into that but if you are, that's definitely a big thing.

As far as housing, I replied in the housing thread but in short I recommend south campus for the best freshman atmosphere.

Thanks for the advice so far! What is your take on food and meal plans, is it worth getting a generous meal plan or is the food not very good and just get the bare minimum. Does food quality vary by dining hall?

You may or may not know this, but how are the grocery stores in Chapel Hill? Are they easy to get to from campus and is it possible to walk there or does one require a car basically?

how much do you know about the pharmacy program? i know its one of the better pharmD programs in the nation that accept hs students, the UCSF one (my local program) requires a BS degree...

i also heard that pharmacy students live away from the rest of the undergrad students, is that true? do you know any pharmacy students? how is the rigor of the program/their opinions of the program?

i know its really random, but i was just wondering since my dad is pushing for me to look into a pharmD program

QUESTION #2 What is the best freshman housing for a someone like me who's abandoning all his friends to look for new ones in a new state in a new country ? Like starting life all over again ... LOL !!

QUESTION # 3 So exactly how friendly and liberal is the student body ? i'm a nice guy, never offensive, no attitude, friendly, helpful.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR TIME !!

What's it like being a Jewish kid (and from a large metro area) at UNC? How easy/difficult is it to meet other Jewish kids? Is there a Hillel on campus?

Nykchisox.
Actually I'm a mom of a son trying to decide between UCLA and UNC. I'm gonna share your post with him and I'm sure he'll be writing with his own questions re: UNC and about Jewish life there. But I have a couple of questions of my own. Hope you can help. We are by no means religious fanatics; however, my son is a musician and has been really active in Judaica, primarily in terms of song leading, youth groups and cantorial work for years. It is a big part of his life and I'm sure he'll be asking about the kinds of opportunities he will have at UNC in that regard. As a parent, I'm more concerned that there be a comfort level for him at UNC. We have never spent time in the southeast and I wondered whether laying down roots in the Bible belt will feel alright to a kid who really delights in his own heritage. Is there a large evangelical population on campus and do they actively recruit? What has been your experience if any with anti-semetism on campus or in the research triangle area? My sense of UNC is that it is an incredibly welcoming community. On the few brief visits we have made, everyone was delightful and kind. The UNC campus seems progressive and as though it celebrates diversity. We do as well and have friends of many relgious backgrounds. Basically I just want to know whether someone like my son will feel a greater connection with Judaica at UNC than at UCLA. I know UCLA has a higher Jewish population cuz it's a huge city. But I'm not concerned with the numbers of Jews as much as I am about the ability to connect with others that really celebrate our heritage, without fear of intimidation or continual proselytizing by fundamentalists groups. Thanks for your help!

Whoops...I just posted my message to Nykchisox on my d's loggin name....I've never written on CC so didn't think to register my own.. So just incase u r wondering...No Nykchisox...I'm not an 18 year old from Colorado. I'm a 49 year old mom of 18 year old twins in Colorado.

Hi, i was wondering what my chances are of getting into UNC as a transfer student.

Currently i am in 2nd year at WCU with a 3.693 GPA and have earned 64 hours. I will have 80 hours this May. I have lots of EC activites. My High school GPA was about 3.1 (not good). I have 8 hours of honors cources.

One thing to remember about Chapel Hilll is that it is unlike anyplace else (except maybe Asheville) in North Carolina. I would not be concerned about "continual proselytizing by fundamentalists groups" because if anything the opposite is probably true. UNC and Chapel Hill are pretty liberal places (" a blue island in the red sea") and very tolerant of divergent opinions ... as long as they are liberal....just kidding.

Jesse Helms once said that they needed to put a fence around Chapel Hill to keep things from spreading.....seriously!

The Pit Preacher (a campus regular) does his daily rant but I am confident that your son would find UNC to be a warm, welcoming extremely tolerant place.

I know plenty on UNC freshman who tell me not to really worry about my grades too much this semester. Are they right.

Will my admission be in question if i pull a C or two in AP classes?

My friend who is also a freshman has told me she has heard of people making straight C's and still getting in. Please note I'm not shooting for straight c's at all.

eadad: I just saw this post. Very funny about Helms. Actually, I think he said this when NC was putting together funds for a NC state zoo. That's when he said, "why don't we just put a fence around Chapel Hill?" :)

I thought after I posted that I had misquoted a bit......my best friend passed away last week. His daughter is married to Carolina native and UNC graduate. He was asking about my son and we were sharing stories about UNC and Chapel Hill when he told me the Helms story....under the circumstances I'm surprised that I remembered as much of the story as I did. Thanks for the clarification.....sincerely.

eadad: I'm sorry to hear about your friend. I only added that for you, because the story is so familiar around here and so funny--why spend funds on a state-funded zoo, when we have Chapel Hill! True Jesse :)
How's your daughter? Has she made up her mind yet?
