What items did you wish you had packed more (or less) of? I’m an overpacker, my DS (incoming prep) is a notorious underpacker, and I’m having a hard time getting a handle on how much of his clothing, supplies, etc, he really needs to bring.

My kids really appreciated the fans I purchased for their rooms. The dorms are very warm in September. We purchased enough toiletries and laundry soap/dryer sheets to last for the year. They were busy and they were glad that they didn’t need to shop for essentials. They both contacted me early in the school year asking for portable dryer racks. I ordered them thru Bed, Bath & Beyond and had them delivered directly to the school. We didn’t purchase the laundry service. They didn’t complain about doing their own laundry. Some rooms have carpeting and others don’t. We will buy a rugs this year. Headphones are essential. DVD Drives for their laptops and a some dvd’s were appreciated. They don’t have much access to tv and liked to have the option to veg out and decompress with a favourite series. Raincoats/boots are essential in New Hampshire. My girls both used their ice skates a lot this year at Exeter.
That’s all I can think of for now. I’m happy to answer any questions about Exeter.

Thank you! We went back and forth about the laundry decision, and waited until the last possible moment before deciding to sign up. DS will be playing a sport and an instrument, and has poor time management skills, so it seemed like one small thing that could make life a little bit easier. Does anyone know the approximate schedule?

I’m pretty sure this answer will differ for the boys and girls, but did you pack/order any cleaning supplies? Among the schools we toured, it seemed some offered students access to common supplies (including vacuum cleaner), while some individual students had basic items (Swiffer, Febreeze, Clorox Wipes) stashed in their closet. My son is not fastidious, but has come to the realization that clutter and mess really distract him, and so makes an effort to keep his room pretty clean.

If I were a parent, I would think that the kid should have basic cleaning supplies. Whether they use them is out of your control. Personally, unless there’s a brand not available locally, I’d buy them there, but that’s just me. And yes, there is no need to pack a vacuum cleaner.

We ended up getting a small stick vacuum. Much easier to have their own. Also paper towels. I’m not sure the colored wipes I send were ever opened. A rain coat and boots (we did bean boots) are essential! We didn’t do the laundry plan because kiddo is allergic to most detergents. Extra sheets are good and a body pillow! I recommend under packing. I over pack and kiddo under packs. He knew what he would actually use and you can amazon prime whatever you need or they can walk to Walgreens down the street.

If I don’t make an athletic team in the fall, can I join Drama or do I have to sign up in advance?

you need to register for everything in advance-you will make a team but it may be JV. You must take gym if you dont play a sport. Unless something has changed.

If you are coming as an Upper, 11th grader, then you have an option to *opt a term, which essentially means you have 2 hours of “me time” and don’t have to do a sport. But yeah, you can always do a club option, which is akin to scrimmaging against your fellow Exonians. But, if you happen to not make the team, you will have to email the scheduler to tell them what your backup is. Whether that be club options, weightlifting, drama, etc.

Fortunately, anyone in 10th or above can opt out, so you only have to do a “sport” for all three terms in prep year. But you definitely cannot join drama if you don’t make a team. There are auditions for the Main Stage within the first two weeks.

Does Exeter stream athletic events so parents can watch? If so, what system/technology do they use? Thanks!

Does Exeter offer singles to entering 11th graders?

Also, what is a good SAT score for an applying junior, if any of you know? I scored a 1420 but I don’t know if I should retake it.

@HMom16 Exeter does stream events. I’m not sure what tech they use, but it is available on the website if you go to the athletics section.

@CavsFan2003 Exeter has a lot of singles! Even for grade 9. Some dorms, like my kid’s, are almost all singles.

What kind of questions should i ask during interviews?
