Ask about Stevens

Any questions?

Why are people clicking on this thread but not asking any questions? It’s not like you can look up anything you want here.

Hi. How is the premed program at Stevens. Seems like much of what have been posted so far have been on engineering.

Sorry, my son is an engineer. Maybe someone else knows.

(I’ll ask him though, maybe one of his friends is premed)

How easy is it to fund stevens? Would having a sat score of 1700+ qualify and being top 10% in high school give you a good scholarship? Thanks

maybeitstrue: Your SAT is on the low side but they will view your whole application including GPA and extracurriculars.

I would wait to make a final decision until all of your scholarship/financial aid offers come in. I think that Stevens gives financial help to 93% of students but it will vary depending on merit and financial need.

I hate to say but Steven’s is probably my “safe” uni (not the safest i must admit compared to what is out there).
Is it likely that an international student with a 2100 SAT, 800 phys SAT II and 780 MathsII SAT II will get accepted - including mostly 80s/90s for Cambridge A Levels and a lot of ECs (not necessarily distinguished ECs, more like a jack of all trades type)? Just wanting to check how likely it is that this is a “guaranteed” acceptance (relatively speaking of course, as I am applying to other unis like MIT, CalTech, Princeton, etc). I am worried about my lack of leadership positions and the slightly low SAT as compared to some of my other unis.

I have a son at Stevens. Does the school provide any communication to the parents? Currently I get email notifications about billing only. Are there any other newsletters I should be getting?

MRU93Raith your stats are good for a U.S. applicant but I’m not sure about the international applicant pool. (and I am only guessing that international applications vs domestic will be more competitive at any of the schools you applied to)

Oneperson you can sign up for a parent newsletter here:

How much institutional aid do they give on average?

Luminiz I don’t know the answer to that question, but most students get something. I know several students (including my son) who attend Stevens and they were all awarded nice scholarships. Stevens has some generous alumni.

How rigorous are the transfer acceptances? I’m a 2nd year undergrad (mechanical engineering) with a 3.95 GPA, potentially transferring from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. I’ve done a lot of volunteer work and I’m an officer of my school’s chapter of Society of Women Engineers.

With your GPA and the fact that you’re a female engineer, I’d say your chances are very good. My son is in his second semester now and he loves Stevens.

What was your son’s stats? Why did he pick Stevens over the other schools he applied to?

I won’t give exact stats but he was top 1% of his class, excellent SATs, long-term ECs. So an all around good student. He wanted a smaller school, near NYC, with co-op, where he could major in engineering. He visited all prospective campuses. After visiting, he decided that he did not want a huge campus and he did not want a rural location.

I’ll share my son’s stats.

3.83 unweighted average.
Decent number of APs.
Good ECs
31 on ACT, which is equivalent with a 2040 SAT.

He was accepted ED and told he was in the center of the pool they are looking for this year.

He didn’t get much of an award, so we will be paying the vast majority of the tuition. This was expected.

After visiting, interviewing and talking with schools, he seemed like a match for Stevens, RPI, Lehigh, and WPI. In fact, RPI started to recruit him after the visit. We didn’t pursue, but from what they were saying, RPI would have given more.

Cornell, although a reach, seemed to imply he had a good shot. He didn’t like Cornell or RPI. Both are in depressing areas of upstate NY.

Lehigh was his second choice.

He picked Stevens because he loved the location and liked the students he met on his visits. He attended ECOES (Stevens science summer camp). Every experience was positive.

He also liked the placement percentages and salary ranking in Payscale.com rankings (#5 in the country).

My son also looked at Lehigh but did not like the rural location and the hills >.>

“He picked Stevens because he loved the location and liked the students he met on his visits… Every experience was positive.”

This was the same for my son. We visited and he immediately loved the feel/location of the campus. We found the students to be extremely friendly and helpful. Several of them stopped to talk with us and answer all of our questions.

S applied RD, any idea when they are notified of a decision? He did his interview back in October when we were there on a visit trip.

Last year, people started to get notified on March 15:

Good luck to your S!!!
