Ask an Admissions Counselor - TCNJ

Hi Mavs21! Anything you do can help your chances! We love to see students who are involved in their communities with community service, clubs, organizations, part time jobs or sports and we look for students who challenge themselves with APs and honors classes! It’s not always about the total of AP classes you’ve taken, but your journey in HS. We always look to see if you’ve ramped up your schedule senior year and grown from freshman year.

Hello. I just sent my application to TCNJ on Sunday night. I applied ED for political science. My concern is that I am only sending one letter of recommendation and then having my guidance counselor fill out the common app forms. I only got one letter of recommendation because it is the only teacher that I have had multiple times and that I feel knows me well enough to write me a letter of recommendation. Will this hurt my chances?

Hi Savadela! I’m glad to see that you applied! Awesome! No, that won’t hurt your chances at all. The form on the Common Application filled out by your Guidance Counselor can count as a recommendation. Also, it’s great to see that you picked a teacher for your recommendation who really knows you. Picking someone who can really speak to the type of person you are is what we care about most. It’s always about quality over quantity.

Okay, thank you! I have been stressing about that since I submitted my app on Sunday. Thanks again!

Hi. Are admissions standards higher for out-of-staters? If we aren’t able to visit before acceptance because of distance, is that a problem? Thanks.

I cannot find it on the TCNJ web site. Does TCNJ take SAT score choice?

I have a question for the admissions counselor. My son is planning on applying to TCNJ on the Common Application. I have read about an activities resume that needs to be submitted, however I do not see anywhere on the supplemental application that mentions an activities resume. Where are the directions for the activities resume?
Thanks so much.

MWestMom: It is not harder to be admitted as an out of state student. Actually, as an institution, TCNJ is looking to grow their Out-of-state population. And although we do look at demonstrated interest (like coming for a campus visit or meeting us at a college fair) when reviewing apps, it would certainly not hurt a student’s chances if they can’t visit before applying.

Wtuan: Yup! TCNJ allows score choice.

Karensue2: The activities resume is on the main part of the Common App. Not the supplement. There is a small section on the Common App to add your extra-curriculars.
For that reason, I always encourage students to add a supplemental activities resume. This can be as simple as a word document that is uploaded to the Common App just like the application essay.

Hey i just submitted my ED common app and school forms on Wednesday and Thursday of this week. All the other colleges on my common app say my application has been downloaded by the college, except TCNJ. Seeing as i am applying early decision this is the application i am most stressed about and it says “submitted” but not downloaded. I submitted it on Wednesday night, should i be worried?? Or is there just a lot of applications that are being downloaded because the ED deadline is approaching! I am seriously freaking out haha

HELP!!!

Hey Glzsprts! I’m excited to see that you applied ED! That’s great! Yes, we’ve had a lot of applications coming in so that may be the cause for the delay. You should be receiving a confirmation email and follow up hard copy letter soon. If you don’t hear anything in a week and it still says that it was “submitted” but not “downloaded,” give us a call at the office and we can check that out for you… 609-771-2131.

TCNJ does not require SAT subject test scores. However, will it be helpful if we also send our SAT subject scores? In terms of admission decisions, honor class selection, and scholarship competition?

Hi Wtuan! If you send us your ETS report, we will see your scores, but they really don’t have any impact on admissions decision or scholarship. We will focus on the other areas of your application for those. As for class placement, we use the TCNJ placement exams and AP scores to make sure you are in the right classes your first semester.

Do you superscore the ACT? or atleast look at all the subscores and take that into consideration? Also what is the average ACT score you accept? Thanks!

Hi Oxcgirl1029! Yes, we super score the ACT as well. Our middle 50% on the ACT is a 27 to a 31. I hope that helps!

So basically if i got a higher science score one date and a higher english score the next etc. you would add all my high scores up and make a new composite or just look at each best score individually? because my best composite score is a 29 if you take it from one single date, but its a 31 if you take the best subscores from multiple dates, so it would make a big difference.

I’m sorry Oxcgirl1029… I misspoke earlier before. For the ACT we are only looking at your composite score, not the subsections. It seems like, for yourself, we’d be looking at your composite score of 29. For the SAT we will take your best combination of each section, so your best CR and your best M score combined to get your best composite score.

Hi. I applied to TCNJ and I received my paws info but when I went to check my account, it said that my SAT scores havent been received and my transcripts weren’t received either. I sent my SAT scores on October 23rd and my transcripts were sent on November 1st. Does it just take this long for the paws account to update or should I be concerned. The ED deadline is very soon and I’m getting nervous.

Hi! I submitted my ED common app yesterday, but haven’t received my paws info. I was wondering how long it takes to receive paws info. I’m worried because the deadline is in 3 days. Thanks!

Hi Savadela and Vietdancer94! That’s great to hear that you guys applied! It does take a week or two our office to process pieces you send to us. This includes SATs, Transcripts and applications. For ED, as long as your application was received by the deadline (November 15) and your supporting documents (transcripts and SATs) are received by that deadline (December 1) you will be fine. Savadela - I would check back in PAWS at the end of the week to see if your SAT and Transcript have been processed. Vietdancer94- I would hold off for another week and half before getting nervous. If ever in doubt, you can give us a call at 609.771.2131.

Hi! I was wondering, if I am taking all online classes, do I have to submit a homeschool supplement?
