Ask an Admissions Counselor - TCNJ

If our PAWS account didn’t update under “Accept Admission” does that mean we got denied? Some peoples changed but mine hasn’t… should I be worried?

Have all of the PAWS account been updated?

if any of us were to be rejected, would it be updated on PAWS?

Some students have already been accepted online, but havent gotten a letter yet. Is that saying that if we havent heard online yet then we are rejected?

Hey Guys! We just put all the ED decisions in the mail yesterday so they should be coming to you soon. The students who have heard online but have not received letters yet are transfer students staring in January. They run on a slightly different schedule so that’s why they have heard back from us already.

All decisions will be on PAWS after the letters are received. And with decisions, there are three that will come for an ED application. One is that we will admit you, the other is that we will roll you over to regular decision and the third is that we will tell you we can not offer you a spot at TCNJ. Regardless of your decision, you will hear back from TCNJ via US mail and, soon after, reflected in your PAWS account.

Hang tight guys! Tomorrow afternoon you should find out! You can join us on Facebook, Twitter and ***** to answer any questions you may have.

I am not a transfer and my paws account under accept admission changed to we are pleased to grant you admission to the following programs and it had my major and term and application number and a button to click accept or decline admission. I no a lot of people got their letters today my mail is behind so I didn’t does this paws account message mean I got in?

My daughter received deferral for her ED application today. She was devastated. I can understand TCNJ is very selective. But what I don’t understand is why send out “thick envelopes” last Friday to raise expectations, and then give out deferrals this week to crush their hopes. Very sadistic! The admissions dept already knew last week who will get accepted or deferred and yet sent out TCNJ promotional magazine last week to everyone. That mailing should have been only sent to accepted students and those yet to apply. Not to deferred or rejected students. This is unacceptable.

gtbprez- I so agree with you!

TCNJ- What percentage of deferred students are accepted in April?

Glzsprts: Congratulations! The night after we send letters out in the mail PAWS is updated, so yes! You should receive your acceptance letter tomorrow.

Gtbprez: I’m sorry to hear that. On the bright side, a deferral is not the same as a rejection. We simply rolled your daughter’s application over to the general admissions pool so that we can review it again. When re-reviewing early decision applications, we certainly take note that these students applied ED and are interested in attending TCNJ. She should certainly keep us updated on any awards she may receive over the next few months by emailing us at TCNJInfo@tcnj.edu.

We certainly didn’t intend on mailing any viewbooks to early decision applicants for that exact reason. I’m sorry to hear that she got one on accident.

Senioritis12: I’m not sure of the answer to that question. I’ll look into and post as soon as I find out.

Thank you for replying. One more question though, when you look at regular decisions will the deferred applicants be mixed in with RD or will you look at them separately?

AdminStaffTCNJ: Whether it was a calculated move or an honest mistake, it should never happen again. You cannot simply dismiss this “accident” as trivial. It’s finals week at the county college where she has a full semester load. Add internship, a retail part-time job and a college sports showcase tournament this weekend. These kids work very hard just to please prestigious schools like TCNJ. And it’s still not enough…

To put her thru an emotional roller coaster is completely unnecessary and unconscionable. Just read this forum and related threads to see how these kids went thru when they received your viewbook and then the deferral letters.

We all make mistakes and TCNJ is not immune to such. But we must learn from them, and seek corrective actions. If TCNJ is seriously contrite about this incident, you should at least send immediately a letter of sincere apology to those harmed by your “accidental” mailing.

Hello CC,

My son was accepted ED. Your webste says: “More often than not, you will hear if you’ve received a merit scholarship in your acceptance letter. There is a chance, however, that your merit scholarship decision will come two to three weeks after your acceptance”. Doesn’t seem like many of those accepted received merit $ in their acceptance letter. Does it come only after officially accepting?

Senioritis12: I thought I posted this earlier this morning, but I don’t see it up here… We admit about half of our ED deferrals by April. We defer students because we want to see how the class shapes out and for that reason, these students are read near the end of the general admissions process. Although we don’t necessarily re-review them in a separate group, it is very clearly marked on their application folders that they applied ED and so we know they are serious about attending TCNJ. We are always encouraging ED deferred students to keep us updated on their achievements throughout the year. If you choose to retake your SATs, receive your mid-year grades, or receive any honors, please pass those along so that we can make note of those in your file. Also, if you would like to send in a personal statement explaining why you would like to attend TCNJ, we always accept those! You can send it to TCNJInfo@tcnj.edu

Gtbprez: We at TCNJ are by no means treating this as a “trivial accident.” We are in the process of drafting an email to explain the purpose of the viewbook, review our application notification dates and apologize to any ED applicants who accidental received one.

Grad2012Dad: Can you share where you read that? All In-State students received their scholarship award with their acceptances. For this pool of ED acceptances, we offered about 50 In-State merit scholarships.

AdmissStaffTCNJ,
Here’s the link: [TCNJ Admissions: Merit Scholarships at TCNJ](TCNJ Admissions: Merit Scholarships at TCNJ)

So just to clear, if there was no mention of merit $ in letter, than none is to be expected is what you are saying…correct?

I am a parent, as well as a high school teacher of a course called Transitional Strategies, which prepared students for post-secondary educational opportunities. While my son was just accepted to TCNJ, several of my own students are still waiting to hear from their first choices.
Here is link to an excellent article to help both parents and students survive “rejection”. [Thin Envelope Blues | Admit This!](http://www.collegeview.com/admit/?p=1138) . Copy and paste it into your browser. I try very hard to help my students understand that they will end up at the college where they were meant to be. I hope this article helps a bit.

Also, may I ask…50 out of how many?

AdmissStaffTCNJ: I’m glad to hear you are addressing this issue. We will be waiting for the explanation and apology.

I am curious if students have the ability of designing their own major. I know TCNJ is very well-known for education, but you do not have an Education Policy major or even a general Public Policy major and I would be interested in pursuing either of the two (to prepare for a future involved in the Department of Education.) I would appreciate if you let me know if doing so would be possible or if there are any majors at TCNJ that are similar to either of those.

I just got accepted ED and I was wondering because my next half of senior year is so challenging that if my grades change from a mid A to maybe a high B will my admission be taken away! Very stressed out because my classes are very challenging

Grad2012dad: In the initial mailing we sent out a little over 50 In-State merit scholarships to about 260 accepts. In-State merit scholarship is based solely off of SAT/ACT scores and class rank. There are a few students who we are waiting on their high schools to send their class rank so we can notify them if they are eligible for scholarship. Those few students will be hearing from us soon.

Justsmile1: Yes, students can design their own major. This is something that they work with their advisors on. Students don’t start the process of a self-design major until they are enrolled in classes and then declare their self-designed major at the end of their sophomore year. I would suggest applying to TCNJ in a major that you are interested in studying like maybe Political Science or Philosophy and then discussing your career goals with your advisor when you are here to see what they advise you do/major in. I hope that helps!

Glzsprts: Congratulations! We certainly look at your final transcript, but we wouldn’t rescind you decision unless something was horribly amiss (you failed classes, you withdrew from all your challenging courses etc). There is only so much counseling we can do over the forums of CC. If you run into a specific situation next semester, I would advise calling us at 609-771-2131 so that we can help you out.
