How far does Andover look for grades? Is it 2 or 3 years?

This year at least, Andover wanted everything submitted online. We drove to the campus to hand in something in paper form and were told they were not accepting anything paper.

We explained that the writing sample they required was on paper and they did end up taking that. but otherwise, no paper!!

There is also a section on the online app for you to download links to videos. So for instance video of you playing piano, or from one of your sports. My son submitted a video of his tennis drills this year which in turn resulted in a phone call from the Andover tennis coach!

what kind of students does andover want?
well-rounded?
or is it okay if your grades and ur seat is average
but you are extremely excellent in music?

What classes are you taking and how does that play out into how many hours of homework you have each night? Can you take 6 classes in your junior year? Also, what’s a cluster really like? What clubs are you in and about how many extracurriculars can each person realistically (and sanely) be involved in each year? Oh and BTW this thread is awesomeeee! It helps so much :)

Hope u don’t mind if i bud in here tinkrgirl lol!

As for what kind of student does PA want, you have to remember that it is an academic institution, so your application must show some form of academic prominence.most kids who come here were top of their class back home. ECs are helpfull, but won’t grant acceptance

And for the classes question:

Im taking 6 classes right now (5 in fall, 6 in winter). I regret taking 5 in the fall because now i need to take more time to get my requirements done. I have done two of the most time commited sports on campus next to crew and still have found time to get in a good 5 hours of hw done every day. I also do debate, chorus, and orchestra and have plenty of time. Andover will only let you do what you CAN do. Try new thinfs in the fall, and experiment a lot. Find what you like, and continue it in the spring. Also about the clusters, they are pretty centralized and bring the community together. Each cluster has its own fun events and has lots of sporit. Everyone gets to know eachother through the munches and it’s just great

I’m also taking 6 classes right now and have been for the entire year. I take a 500-level math course as well as a physics course and the required ENGL-100, HIST-100, language, and arts/PE. The homework load isn’t a big deal as long as you don’t procrastinate too much - I have an average of maybe two to four hours every night. I was in math club, science club, and Philo in fall term, but stopped going later on in the year. I’m also technically in GSA and AKS but never attend. Winter term I did two community service projects but I gave up on one of them this term. I started chorus this term. My sport takes about an hour of commitment, so it’s not a big deal.
My advice is similar to swimdude’s; sign up for loads of crap at the club rally, look at which ones you’re interested in, don’t be afraid to look into new ones or drop boring ones.

I don’t think there’s much difference between clusters except that munches are held in different buildings and dorms differ in clusters; PKN has larger dorms, Abbott has more stacks, etc. PKN also tends to have better cluster events, in my personal opinion.
Not everyone likes their cluster; PKN has good spirit, I think, but some WQN girls I know don’t really like the quads so much. Munches tend to be a little overrated as well; people mingle but don’t necessarily talk to each other. However, the food’s generally good; we had an epic cereal munch some time ago and the cheesecake/pie ones are fun.

@tinkrgirl or other junior PA students: I heard about the lists that someone posted in a junior dorm (GW?). This act demonstrates that it is impossible for a school, even Andover with so many applicants, to weed out the nice kids from the not so nice ones. Do most kids or even the dorm faculty know or suspect who did this, but the school just can’t prove it? In other words, is it fairly obvious who the meanies may be?

hey guys, I think I can sum this one up…

Most people I know were pretty annoyed and angry at the person who would do such a thing. To think that our class has gone down to such a level of maturity is really just mind-bottling. Whoever did do it should fess up soon, and if they don’t, they’ll probs have guilt with them for some period of time here. There are rumors going around as to who did it, but those are just speculations, and could be false. Administration aren’t taking any of these rumors into account, and have really been trying to break the case with hard fact, which so far, there have been almost none. As for the meanies question, there really aren’t meanies in this school, but they are pretty evident if you do happen to find some. Most can just avoid them because they tend to be in their own little circle, so they really don’t affect anyone else. Honestly, most people have forgotten about this incident and have moved on with their lives. It’s not the fact that people are upset because of the mean things on these lists, but the fact that someone has stooped down to such a low level. Hopefully they’ll fess up soon to alleviate the stress from administration.

bump! 10char

If you live in the Quads or Abbot, you have to cross a highway (Main Street). I read about a few crashes this year. Is crossing dangerous?

I graduated from Andover 2011. It is NOT dangerous to cross Main St. I actually think it’s much safer than the main road at Exeter. While it’s true there have been some unfortunate accidents in the past, I have never heard of “crashes.” The one time where there might have been a “crash” involved was when a student (without looking) walked in front of a car and the student was merely startled (no injuries whatsoever). If you wait for the cross walk sign (which really does work) and look where you’re going, Main St. is very safe crossing from Abbot/Quads.

Also, referring to Main St. as a “highway” is correct, although slightly misleading. Main St. is Route 28 and has always had light traffic during the four years I was there.

I currently live on main street right down the street from PA and I will agree, it is not a threatening road to cross. The cars are not going fast and there are a bunch of traffic lights too. Unless you are completely oblivious when crossing you will be fine.

Truthfully, there still is some danger. I think two kids have been hit this year, one seriously but not life-threateningly injured. Both times it was near the Bell Tower, I think. But compared to the number of people who cross daily, who cross the street in a year - it’s really slim. As long as you watch and make sure the cars coming towards you stop, you’ll be fine.

^^^just note that those accidents occurred on a crosswalk that didn’t have a stoplight, at night (around 9:00), and raining. In general, it is pretty safe to cross the street. My words of advice, don’t use the bell tower crosswalk when raining and dark -_-…

Swimdude… As far as sports go, does everyone make JV2/JV3 teams? Are they basically instructional, or what? Thanks in advance!

Don’t quote me on this because I am not a big sports person and I really only know what I know from overhearing other people talking about it.
No, not everyone makes JV2 teams. I think if it extends to JV3, there’s a good chance you’ll get in but I think there still isn’t a guarantee. I don’t think they’re instructional; JV3 might be but I don’t think JV2 generally is.

TheTester: yes there are instructional sports, and there is no JV3. JV2, usually don’t cut people, so most get spots on the team.

How are instructional sports? Are they just doing some basic stuff, or do they also have games? I’ve been fencing for many years, and I was so excited to find a fencing team at Andover. But I was kind of disappointed to find out that it was an instructional team.

If I want to do crew in the spring but haven’t really done it before (besides a camp or two) should I skip cross-country (I do that as well) and take instructional crew before the spring racing season?
