Ask an Andover Student

Well, ASK AWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay!
- What's your furthest daily commute?

What's your favorite part of the town being so near?

What are the art facilities like?

Is Commons almost completed? Is it PRETTY?

1) What do you think was the reason they picked you?
2) You can request single room dorms right?
3) Does it take a lot of work to get a good grade? Do you have a lot of homework, projects etc.?
4)Do you like it there?

Worst part of Andover?

Best part of Andover?

Was it your first choice, why or why not?

Is it as good as you expected?

How is the food, honestly?

Is there much dating?

About how many hours of homework each night?

When do you get up and go to bed?

Thanks. Sorry about having so many questions, Andover is one of only two schools I'm applying to =)

Hmmmm... okay.

Firstly, what grade are you in? Where are you from? How much homework per night would you say you average? Sleep? Do you play any sports? If so, at what level and how have you found it balancing a rigorous courseload along with rigorous physical activity?

How often do you guys venture into Boston and how easy is it.

Is the atmosphere as free-minded as people say it is?

Saer
1). Futhest walk is is from science building to music building (almost opposite sides of campus), but do-able in under 10 minutes (which is the passing time between classes)

2). I love being able to have somewhere to go, (even if it's just a CVS or dunkin donuts). Otherwise it just feels like im in a giant bubble. I often go down tere to eat with my friends

3). I'm not an artist, so i don't know how much I'll be able to help. In my opinion, they're "OK." We have a nice computer imaging lap (polk center), with a bunch of AV rooms and such, which is pretty cool and another awesome feature is we have the Addison Art Museum on campus, which students can get into for free. Often art classes hold classes their and have cool visiting works etc.

4). Commons I hear is SICKKKKKKK, So far, only seniors got a real glimps of it, but the phillipian did a thing on it with pictures (im not sure if u can see these pics online, but i believe so--phillipian website)

-I hear its REALLY REALLY AWESOME and the student lounge downstairs has been described as a "club" (literally, they plan on having senior bouncers down there next year so only upper classman can get in later at night). Plus, Pizza brick oven etc... it's good..(i hear)

1). I dont know, i honestly didnt really think i'd get in and didn't even seriously consider coming here even after I did. I sent in my acceptance literally on the last day I could, it was a hard choice.

2). You can, but as new students, its pretty much random, they'll try to match ur prference, but not always possible. If they have to give you a roommate, you get to fill out a questionaire with qualities you look for in a roomate. Later on as returning students, you have A LOT more say as to who and where you want to room etc. Sucks to be new (kinda)

3). YES YES, its a LOTTTT of work, but what courses you take etc also matter. I get about 7 hrs sleep a night if im really really lucky... To put things in perspective, I went to a REALLY RALLY good public school (one of top few in state). This is on a completely different level.

4). YES, and No... I miss my friends etc, being able to go to movies/malls (you still can, its just hard) and it's a lot of work, but it has helped me get a lot better at managing time, independence, etc...Also, I had to kinda drop some of my old interests here and focus jus because of how busy things are.

This is a good place for you if ur an athlete, i feel, But for instance if you're a musician, i feel liek the deptment is somewhat subpar (maybe its just my expectations from such a good school) It's hard to find time to practice a lot, unless you're REALLY motivated

Mixed feelings

Quick background questions: Grade, Gender and Interests(if you know alot about any one thing inparticular)

-How is the Mock Trial team? I heard they were really new and I was just wondering if you knew anything about that.

-Are all the class rooms basically the same? I saw one English class room and it was really weird... I mean paint was peeling and the chairs were like from 1910. My dad took a picture on his phone and I'm still shocked. Did I see a class room that was in use? I am hoping that I saw an abandoned one. I visited on a Jewish holiday so I didn't see any kids in class.

-How is the Lacrosse team/facilities? The gym at PA really looked old when compared with other schools, and that got me concerned that the field and weight rooms would be sort of old. Are they?

1). Worst part for me, lack of sleep, fatigue from working so hard

2). Best part, the kids you'll meet here and level of academics, also the freedom you have here is great

3). It was the only school i applied to, i didnt expect to go to BS, my parents talked me into trying kinda as a , "lets jsut see, you dont have to go thing." But after i got in I realized , it was an oppertnity that was too good to pass up

4). I think certain aspects were better (academics), certain were worse (music)

5). The food here is like a 70 from 1-100, but... we have a new commons, which opens this spring, and it's supposed to be REALLY REALLY good from what I hear.

6). YES, just as much as public school, but with more freedom!

7). 4-5 is a good average

8). Depends on Homework and day of week. I get up at 7:30 for the 8:00 class, but I dont eat breakfast usually because sleeps more important, so varies. Sleep at around 12-1 on average (but this is junior year so...)

I no kids who can sleep at 10 every night almost and some kids dont sleep till 2 or 3, it varies dependin on your committment and level of clases

11th grade
6-7 Hours on average (like 12 on weekends)
NY
Cant say, dont do much sports anymore

You can only go to boston on weekends w/ ur parents permission (signed slip). BEfore you go, just ask your house counselor for permission and you're off!

Must walk to train station and take 45 minute ride to boston, it's fairly easy to do, though not done too often becaus of how much time it takes and the courseload here.

Grade: 11 male
Interests:Music

Don't know about mock trial, don't realyl hear much from them, but similar clubs like debate and model UN are good. 3 ppl at our school qualified for the world debate tournament representing US, which was a big deal

English building is just old. I dont know what room you saw, but i think they're all really old. Gym is older too, but the weight room is nice and most of the toher athletic facilities are good-->excellant i think

Fields/Stadiums are top notch

Lacross team is good i hear, I have a few friends who play and they say its pretty good (and hard to get on as they are trying now)

What were your hooks and stats?

SSATs, GPA, etc... I mean, if you aren't an artist or athlete, what got you accepted?
Are a URM? Really unique lifestyle? Outstanding recs?

NOt URm, I was a good athlete before I came, but i've realized it's too much to manage. I'm good musician. Nothing else special, no legacy, nothing

All A's GPA and Good SSAT ( i think 97% overall?)

I think my essay's/interview helped me a lot

I'm just really well rounded

Do you know a chick named Jinzi?
She's in 10th grade. I don't remember what you call 10th-graders haha.

ANDDDD

What do you play?
Because I'm really kind of interested in double-majoring in music, and you said the Andover music department is sub-par....soooo

But that's only IF I get in. crosses fingers

Good luck to err'bodyy:)

& muchos gracias for answering!

How is the music program not so good?
I'm quite into music too...

What's the dance program like in Andover?

Do you have a room mate? If so, how was the experience like? Did you get annoyed at each other alot, or was it just great all the time?

What's the dorm life like?

There are alot of really interesting courses I saw in the course book- do you get to construct your own schedule?

Are the commons going to be completely built by next year?

Are they planning on rebuilding the really old buildings (like English)?

What did you get on your SSAT?

Did you regret your choice in going to Andover AT ALL? Ever?

Thanks... alot of questions, but hope you can answer them!

Bump... this is informative

Are there pianos in every dorm? I want to continue and at Exeter (I went to the summer school) most dorms had a piano (even though some had a grand piano and others had some cheap up-right) or is there some type of practice room that you can go to?

WHAT DO THE LETTERS LOOK LIKE? :) we are all going nuts.
