Ask an Andover Upper Questions

was it hard getting into the school as a 10th grader especially since the number of applicants they accept is lower as compared to the 9th graders? I am an international student and I really hope to be able to enter Andover in grade 10 next year as I had missed the application last year for 9th grade.

Do you have any tips that you can give to others who are also applying for Andover? Like SSAT, application process etc  thanks

Outoftheweather,
I am also a rising 11th grader at Andover, and have been at the school for both 9th and 10th grade. As for your question about the stress of taking two languages, it depends on how you do it. (Someone correct me if I’m wrong,) but I think that the first year a student can easily incorporate a second foreign language into his schedule is 11th grade. What most students who choose to do this have to do is take US History Senior Year instead of Upper Year (11th grade). In other words, you would replace US History with a second language. This would probably be the least stressful way to take two languages. If you really don’t want to postpone history, you could take six courses instead of five and sacrifice your free period, but that would probably be extremely stressful (especially because upper year is already notoriously difficult)

Andover2015,
What about taking two languages in the 9th grade year? It sounds pretty stressful to me.

outoftheweather,
I haven’t heard of anybody taking two languages freshman year. I guess you could, but you wouldn’t even be able to continue with the language the next year because you would need to fill the elective requirements (1 term each of art, music, PE) by the end of your tenth grade year. Since there are only six class periods in a day, and five of those are already taken up by mandatory classes, really the only way to go is to take your favorite language starting in ninth grade and pick up a secondary language in 11th grade. The foreign language program at Andover (COMPLETE immersion) is rigorous enough that you could become moderately conversational in a language after two years.

Outoftheweather,

Check with your academic advisor when school starts, but I think you can also fulfill your foreign language requirement by taking two years of one language and one year of another “not commonly taught” language such as Russian or Arabic.

Thus, for example, you could take French in ninth and tenth grade and then continue with two years of Russian or Arabic in eleventh and twelfth grade. Depending on your placement, this approach may prevent you from taking an AP language course.

If I had it to do over again,I would have taken Russian. Every student of Russian at Andover I know is very happy they chose to study that language.

Synchro,

I wouldn’t be surprised if tenth grade is harder to get into than ninth grade because Andover accepts more ninth graders than tenth graders. But I can’t say for sure because I don’t know how many Andover applicants apply to ninth and tenth grade respectively. You might ask your interviewer about this.

You can, if you wish, repeat ninth grade. Keep in mind, however, that admission to Andover is tough for everyone regardless of what grade to which they apply.

It’s hard to predict what makes a successful candidate. Outstanding grades, SSAT scores, recommendations, essays, extracurricular activities, etc. may get you in the admission race. But many applicants don’t cross the finish line unless their applications also reveal a distinguishing talent, extracurricular passion, background, etc that will meaningfully contribute to the Andover community.

Good luck!

Thanks! @Sergeant

A good way to look into some of the life at andover is to read some articles from our newspaper, the Phillipian. It’s completely student produced and uncensored by administration. We write articles on campus events, breaking news, achievements, sports, and responses to issues around campus. It’s just a real good way of gaining a sense of what the andover community is.

Phillipian.net is the link

hi swimdude006 i’m applying for tenth grade next year because i missed the application this year but i was wondering (incase i do get in, hopefully), is it really hard to fit in with returning lowers if you’re an international student that comes new at tenth grade? Are they already in such a tight knit group that it’s hard to make friends with them?

Nahh man we like to make friends! Just be open and hope you don’t get put in a new 10th grader dorm. Be involved and make an effort to socialize. We returners don’t bite :P

swimdude006 haha thanks
also random question but about how many British students are there? Do Americans find our accent weird?

I know two people (guy and girl) in my grade who came out onthe American school in london, and one from the public school system. The accents are awesome and nobody judges!

How about a Singaporean? Are there any Singaporeans in Andover?

Yuppp!!!

Really?!? Okay! That gives me some hope that I will be able to enter in next year fall :stuck_out_tongue: thanks!

swindude006 haha thanks  that reassured me so much! It’s just that my Brit accent is so strong - not as strong as the queen or anything but it’s pretty distinct and the friends i have in America always laugh about it :)

Hello,
I am a new lower this year in PA and I have two particular concerns.
Since returning lowers had one more year of involvement in extra-curriculars and sports than new lowers, will getting leadership positions for the latter during their upper or senior year be a challenge? (Considering the fact that returning lowers have relatively broader connections at school)
Also, is becoming a leader in PA’s “big three clubs”- PAMUN, Philo. and The Phillipian competitive?

Thanks so much

Hi,
I am a singaporean who wishes to apply for Exeter/ Andover next year.
May I enquire about how you got accepted into Andover?

 1. SSAT - What did you prepare for SSAT and how long did you spent preparing for the test? Do you have any tips on how to ace the SSAT test?

Interview - What were some of the questions the interviewer asked? I read on this forum that they asked the usual questions, but I heard from one of my friends that they asked weird questions like “apples or oranges”. Can you please enlighten me on some of the questions the interviewer asked, and how you answered them?

Essays - For andover, you have to write a few essays / answer questions. How did you write the essays? Any tips? Does it have to be written in good english, or just to show more of my personality? Is it advisable to include my achievement in some of the question? Any suggestions on how to score well for the essay, other than being truthful?

Thank you for answering all my questions, I hope I am able to join you next year at Exeter / Andover, ( I am applying for grade 11).
