I’m just saving this thread from deletion in case anyone still finds it useful to read through

Thanks OSULolz! (I still look at it frequently).

OSULolz, Thanks, I also look at it frequently.
On our way home to NJ from a great weekend visit with our S. He is thrilled to be at OSU and thriving there, academically and socially. So relieved he truly found the right place for him. Thanks for your support as we questioned everything!
Hope you continue to love your job?! Keep us posted!
Go Bucks! :)

What kind of scholarships are available for out of state transfers? I’m looking to transfer my junior year(2013). I got a 3.5 GPA in high school, 23 ACT, college GPA is 3.9 at this point. I’m in an honors program and do a good amount of community service. It’d be awesome if I could get enough scholarships to make the cost equivalent to in state tuition, so I can at least consider Ohio State.

OSULolz-I know with the switch to semesters, this may be hard to answer. I feel my S should meet with his advisor sooner rather than later regarding scheduling the spring semester classes. He is in Biochem but may want to switch to microbiology and/or molecular genetics. I think he really needs to get a handle on what to take next so he can switch majors if he wants. Did you meet with your advisors often on things like that?

Can you remember the things you had to do each semester (i.e. financial responsibility statement)? You told me to remind you. I know he has to agree to the statement and sign up for the payment plan again. Housing/dining should be for the year so I don’t think he has to do anything for that. I know they had him as an OOS student because they didn’t have his Selective Service number and it was brought back to IS when we provided that. I am assuming once they have it, they have it.

Anything else come to mind? At what point do they figure out housing for the next year? Will he get something from housing asking if he plans on remaining on campus? I don’t want to let anything slip through the cracks.

Thanks as always! :-)

@Nova88 Glad everything is going well–going great for me too! Finishing up my few months in Dallas / Fort Worth, then off to Los Angeles for a few months!!

@OhioState99–I highly doubt you can get tuition down to in-state levels, because Ohio State really doesn’t give out tons of great scholarships. Here’s a link to help: [Scholarship Programs - Student Financial Aid - The Ohio State University](Web Login Service | The Ohio State University)

@NervousNellie1–I really didn’t meet with my advisors that often, I mostly looked at the sheet showing my required curriculum and used schedulizer to figure out the rest. However, it’s completely understandable to want to meet with them for guidance, it should be pretty easy to set up an appointment via email. If they are unsure, just get the general courses out of the way, or take courses that would be required by all of biochem/microbiology/mole gen

In terms of per-semester things…the financial responsibility statement was brand new for Summer 2012, so I never dealt with that. You can change your meal plan each semester (I assume so at least, we could do so quarterly) if the amount was too little / much. For the selective service number, correct, you’re good on that. Thinks like health insurance should only be yearly. Housing for us typically started the end of January / February…he will get an email regarding on-campus housing if he chooses to do so

This calendar may help as well: [Important Dates : University Residences and Dining Services](<a href=“Page Not Found : Housing and Residence Education”>Page Not Found : Housing and Residence Education)

Hope that helps!

@OSULolz-are you familiar with mymathlab (Calculus) and mastering chemistry (Chemistry)? If so-is the work completed in those programs online counted toward a grade? Does it show up in Carmen or added to the final grade at the end?

In my classes they were usually for a grade. Check the syllibus to make sure but they probably are. Usually it would say homework is between 15-20% of final grade. Not all grades are always entered in carmen. That is more of a tool just for your information.

To OSULolz or OsuMEngineer-Gen Ed requirements:
Some of the gen ed requirements are also prerquisites for my S. So, for example-if he takes Chem 1610 and Biology 1113, will those count as both the prerequisite requirement for Microbiology AND knock out the 10 hours required for Natural Sciences Gen Ed requirement. One is a biological science and one is a physical science.

He is taking Calc this year so if I go with that same train of thought, that would take care of the Quantative and Logical Skills Gen Ed requirement (5 hours).

Just want to make sure I am thinking straight.

Thanks for your knowledge (again). :-)

@NervousNellie1-- you are thinking correctly, it will be BOTH a pre-req and count towards those requirements.

Pre-reqs don’t really count towards anything on your transcript so they don’t have to be ‘completed’ per se. For example, I took Food Sci 201 which had a pre-req of Bio101, but I emailed the professor and got that waived and took the course without the pre-req.

Hope the year has been good so far!

@ OSULolz-the year has been good so far. I couldn’t have asked for it to go any better.

Do you know some creative ways to use up meal blocks at the end of the semester?

@NervousNellie1:

We used to buy tons of grocery swipes, swipe friends, order tons of PAD Pizza, and eat dinner at The Blackwell (fancy place at FCOB, usually 7-10 swipes for the meal)

One problem I have is that even though I have been living in the U.S. since 4th grade, I’m an international student. Do you think I have a good chance of getting in and possibly get full ride or at least some scholarship?

I think it’s pretty obvious that you’d get into Ohio State…it’s not Harvard

Hi there,
Sorry if this has been answered before! I was wondering about Honors Housing. My academics are pretty good so I think I have a pretty good shot at the Honors program, but I view myself as a pretty normal person; although I can interact with smart people, I find myself relating more with normal people.

Likewise, I’d like to take advantage of OSU’s party scene and wouldn’t want my social life to be restricted (not saying that smart people don’t know how to party).

So, my question is, are the honors dorms usually less fun for someone like me? How are the parties over there? Are most people very anti-drug, anti-party?

Thanks for you response. :)

I was admitted on Thursday and received my letter in the mail on Saturday.
Do you have any idea when the Acceptance Fee Statement will be arriving? I know what dorm I want and I want to get that acceptance fee in as soon as possible so I can be sure to get in there.

hey OSULolz, do you think i’ll manage to get on campus housing for the spring semester? i’ll be entering as an international freshman and i sent the housing app this past monday (november 19th). should i be looking for off campus housing?

SeaLionLaugh, I lived in honors housing, and I think someone who does not already prefer the company of smart(er) students is probably not going to have the best experience in the honors dorms. I loved my time in Lincoln, the west honors dorm, but most of the reason I loved being there was because most of my suitemates and friends from my floor were academically-focused smart people like me, and I relate best to those kinds of people.

Obviously not everyone in the honors dorms is very bright, as honors starts at around a 30 ACT, but my floor had a disproportionate number of students in pre-med, pre-pharm, engineering, CS, and and other fairly intense majors/ tracks. We were as a whole, quieter, less likely to drink, much less likely to do drugs, and less likely to party (as much). My floor was considered pretty social for an honors dorm, but there were plenty of introverts and awkward kids who didn’t go out much.

Ah, ha, ha, ha, stayin’ alive, stayin’ alive

Merry Christmas to OSULolz!!! Thank you for all of your help this year!
