Ask an OSU Senior

The Neil Building on South Campus has been pretty quiet so far! I wonder what the other halls are like…

beingbored, I’ve literally never heard of anyone having their acceptance rescinded for lower grades. I doubt people would be open about that kind of information, but I still think it is exceptionally rare. Don’t fail your senior year classes regardless, since you need to graduate. A few Cs isn’t something to be concerned about.

Hi I just got a letter congratulating me on my acceptance and my enrollment in the College of Arts and Sciences. The thing is, I kind of want to switch to a Business-related major. Is this possible for me to do or do I wait until I schedule my classes? It seemed pretty official that I was in the Arts and Sciences COllege but I really don’t wanna do it.

Basically, how do I change my program?

@SDFGXH

Any other quarter it wouldn’t matter, but since you’re an incoming freshman you schedule your courses at orientation…I would either call admissions to get your major changed, or if there is an issue, just take general classes (GECs) your first quarter that align with the new major you wish to choose. Most people don’t take courses that directly apply to their major during their first quarter (err…semester for you newbies) anyways.

Shouldn’t be a big deal at all

OSULolz, thanks for all the great information! My son is a freshman at Fischer, taking Calculus for Business. They told him that he would need Microsoft Office 2010, not the 2007 version, which he has. I remember you saying that Fischer offers software at a discounted price, but the best offer he found was $100. Is he missing something?

Here: [Fisher College of Business | Downloads and Widgets](http://fisher.osu.edu/social-media/downloads/) is where you can access free software through Fisher, but he needs a fisher login in order to access it. It would be the same as the login and password he uses for the business computer labs in Mason Hall. He should be able to make an account at Mason if he is a business student, if he has not already.

I just flipped through the software Fisher offers for free, however, and don’t see Microsoft Office 2010, only 2007, so that may not be an option for a free download. Apparently all OSU students can purchase some Microsoft products at a discount, detailed here: http://it.osu.edu/personal_use/</a> , but again, it looks like that list does not include Office 2010.

@Shu2006 Maybell is right–you can’t access that website until you’re actually in the business school. I think I was able to my sophomore year. I know they used to offer Office at a very cheap price ($35 through microsoft’s ‘ultimate steal’ website).

However, especially for calculus, I highly doubt that there would be any issue with MS Office 2007. I only ever even remember using office for calculus for extra credit. The only class I could see an issue with is the actual excel/access class (formerly CSE200). All university / fisher computers should have office 2010 available for free use.

Hope that helps!

OSULolz, maybell, Thanks! He is actually at the busines school but can’t seem to find Office 2010 for less than $100. The class is actually CSE, my bad.

But thanks, anyway! It’s great to know that someone out there is trying to help you! :)

Shu2006, if he is only taking a single class that requires Office 2010, he may prefer to use the university’s labs rather than buy the software himself. I’ve yet to have a class that required I use a particular edition of Office, so I doubt he will in the future.

Two questions. Does OSU have sponsored overnight stays? If so could you give me more information.

What is the coed format for the dorms on all the campuses(north, south etc.)

@coola426: Please define what you mean by “sponsored overnight stays.” For the most part, unless your roommate(s) have a problem with it, guests can stay as long/often as you want them to.

Co-ed format for the dorms vary; when I was on South (Siebert), we had male/female separation by floor. When I was on North (Drackett), we had separation by room, but the floor was mixed co-ed. On West (Morrill), it is separated by suite, with suites of mixed gender on each floor. I know some dorms also have ‘wings,’ meaning west wing = girls, east wing = boys.

Let me know if you have other questions

This is kind of an embarrassing question but o well. I’m probably going to sound pretty ignorant in this post but I’ve been thinking about this for a while and I have to get it off my chest.

Basically I went on a college tour about 2 weeks ago visiting schools such as Pitt, Illinois and Indiana and i absolutely fell in love with OSU. One thing that I did not like about OSU was it’s lack of diversity. Basically in college I want to party/hookup/date (as well as study) and I’ve become a little worried that the girls(specifically the white girls) at osu might not like black guys… I know I know it sounds ignorant and stupid but i’m honestly very worried about it. I come from NYC where no one really cares and i’m basically wondering if the same is at OSU, because in NYC Midwestern culture isn’t exactly characterized as ring around the rosy. So basically are interracial hookups/dating common at OSU or does no one really care?

Once again I KNOW i’m coming across as ignorant and stupid but i love all girls(especially white) and it would be a shame if they wouldn’t really give me a chance. So PLEASE excuse my ignorance and answer this question as best as you can. Thank you.

Also may you please comment on the party scene in general?

@damon123 – diversity was covered fairly well starting at post # 355; I would read through those to get a good feel for the situation.

In terms of the party scene in general, OSU is so big that there is always something going on, especially off-campus. South Campus is known more for being the louder/party area of campus, but there are parties/bars/etc all over the place

Hey! Idk if any of you would know about this, but I’m hoping to double major in journalism and theatre with a focus on directing, and I was wondering how I would go about doing that. I’ve been accepted for journalism, so now I just have to get in is the theatre department. Do I talk to someone about it, or how would I manage that situation?

@candice1695–You’ll have to talk to an adviser in the theater department to get your 2nd major officially declared.

You should find this link helpful: [OSU Theatre: Undergraduate Studies](http://theatre.osu.edu/howtomajor.html)

Thank you!

Hi, I’m not sure if you can answer, but I’m a little nervous. I’ve know the OSU website says students will be notified in I think 10-12 weeks about their admission but I’ve seen a lot of people saying they found out sooner. I applied around November 15 and my application still says evaluating. While usually I wouldn’t worry too much, I saw someone say that the longer it takes to find out, the more likely you are to be denied. I just want to know if that’s true or if I’m worrying for nothing.

@EscapefromLa

While it does usually take longer if your application is less strong, I wouldn’t worry until the 10-12 week period has passed. There are still a few weeks left based on when you applied, and they are probably receiving a large number of applications

Hey i was just wondering what the deal is with football and basketball tickets. How much do they cost for a student and how hard is it to get tickets?
