Ask an Upperclassmen anything

I applied and was accepted in 2008 for Penn State University Park. I'm in DUS transferring into Smeal Business College. I've lived in Pollock and East Halls. I rushed a Fraternity my Freshmen year.

If you have any questions feel free to ask.

How hard was it to transfer from DUS into Smeal ? How hard were the classes you needed to take in order to transfer over, and how hard was it to actually get accepted as a transfer into the Smeal School ?

Do you happen to know anything about Discover House? What are your thoughts?
How is the advising in DUS?

Thanks !

To transfer into Smeal from DUS you need to have a 3.2 gpa after your first year and then there is a certain goa you have to get to enter whatever major you want ( most majors require a 3.0 gpa with Finance as the highest at 3.5) The entrance to major process begins after Spring semester of Sophomore year. The classes you need to take were all easy for me so far but I still need to take Marketing 301 and Finance 301. The hardest class I had is what I’m taking now Accounting 211 (class average for the first exam was a 76.5%)

Advising in DUS is great. The advisers are very knowledgable and my adviser helped me with my schedule this semester as to what classes that I need to take and everything.

I don’t know anything about discover house.

If i was accepted as a freshman to Smeal but I have to start in the summer, and also i was told i could start in DUS in the fall… what would you recommend… is it worth it to start in Smeal.

“(class average for the first exam was a 76.5%)”

That statement alone assured me that you are in fact, a business major.

I would recommend that you do the summer for two reasons.

The first is that you would be guaranteed a spot into Smeal as a Freshmen because it is a lot easier to transfer into DUS from Smeal than it is the other way around. I started off my college career in the College of Engineering but I realized that I didn’t want to go down that career path so went to my adviser and signed one piece of paper and I was out and officially in DUS. It’s not the same the other way around.

The second reason that I would do summer session (and the LEAP program in general) is that you get used to the campus before the horde of freshmen to come in during the fall. You get some credits out of the way (very beneficial because the more credits you have the sooner you can schedule your classes next semester thus you have a leg up on everyone else). I took English 15 and Psych during my summer session and I’m glad I got both of those classes out of the way because they were both heavy on reading and writing and taking a full course load during the fall with those kind of classes would be so much time consuming for me.

I don’t know what that means. I got a 90 on my exam. It was hard for me because first of all my professor is a 70+ year old British guy so I can barely understand or hear what he’s saying half the time. Accounting involves a lot of rules as to how everything is organized so it takes a lot of practicing to get everything down.

Sorry, I thought it was funny that you were making a big deal out of a 76% class average. Pretty sure a “C” is average work. In some of my classes, we are lucky if we break into the 60’s as a class average.
