Ask and I'll answer

How does faculty-based student research actually work? I’m planning to major in bio with a longterm view of becoming a pediatrician and would like feel i’m helping children as soon as possible as much as possible. Would the research be strictly lab-based or might there be a community service component? Even though the subject of research is part of one of the questions on Union’s Common App supplement, it’s hard to find info about this major aspect of Union’s mission.

Hi, I am a senior this year and am pretty sure that i am applying to Union ED. I did an interview but just wasn’t sure how important/ influential a campus visit overnight is. Has anyone done one?

It varies by department, however my general impression was that you can get out of it what you put in. I knew some people involved in research with faculty members very early on, mostly in the lab, but my feeling was that there are generally opportunities if you’re interested in doing something. I had friends who worked in various capacities at Ellis hospital, just a few blocks from campus, and others very involved in community service through clubs and organizations. A number of people I knew were also involved in faculty research over the summer, having been offered a paid fellowship.

I’m not sure how important an overnight would be as far as showing interest for an application, however I do feel it could be good if you’re still on the fence about the school. Doing an overnight would give you an opportunity to experience campus life and meet some students. I never overnighted at Union, but I knew I loved it the second time I visited campus; an overnight did, however, help me to completely rule out another school that I’d been really interested in.

We visited Union with my D and we all loved it. My D was really excited by the campus/facilities, the kids she met, and the ability to do science research as an undergrad. However she isn’t much of a drinker/partier (at least as of now) and is a bit concerned about the role of frats at Union. Are there other options on campus for the weekend? Do people go off campus for dinner/movies?
Also (new topic!) what is your opinion of Union’s trimester system. She likes the concept of doing three classes at a time in depth but doesn’t like the idea of having different vacations than her HS friends and getting out later in June.
Any input is appreciated.

You mentioned: “Union recently ranked in the top 25 in magazine ranking (I can’t find the link) of earning potential for different colleges, so I guess they’re doing something right!”

Many of the articles of this type are based on studies by Payscale. I have attached a link that show Union as having the 13th best return on investment of all US colleges.

Thank you for your patience and helpful answers.

Hello,
I’ve been wanting to transfer to a good school.
I have a lot of schools on my mind and Union was one of them. I dont know if i have a chance at all. I dont have good hs grades, however my college grade aren’t that bad": I have a 3.1 as of now but Im sure that will get better maybe 3.2 before its time to transfer. I also didnt have good sat’s.
Do i have a chance ?
thank you!

how accepting are students at union towards minority students?

i only ask this because i know some may have not ever talked to minorities since alot come from a preppy, private school background

so is there some type of barrier to break or is it not a big issue?

Hey,
My GPA is about 3.47, I recieved a 1990 on my SAT’s (600 Math, 690 Critical Reading, and 700 Writing), a 750 on the SAT II for US History, got a 29 on my ACT’s, have taken/are taking 14 AP/honors classes in my high school career, have a lot of extracurriculars, and submitted an Intel project. I have good recommendations from my teachers and the deputy superintendent of my school district, and strong essays. Oh, and I’m from NY. However, I have been told by numerous people Union is a reach school for me due to my GPA, but I am hoping my rigorous schedule makes up for it. Any opinions on my chances would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I applied to this program and was forwarded to the next level. I hoping to get wind of an interview any day now. But I have also applied to RPI, NU, Brown, etc. I noticed LIM because of it’s focus on Management, but what does that mean in the long run?
Why this program? What are a pros for Union LIM? What will it give me (other than an MBA)?

On my last Union tour i learned that Union has the best return on investment in the state of NY which means it ranks better than Cornell, Columbia, Barnard, NYU, Bard, Vassar, and Colgate. Just something to think about. I thought it was interesting.

If you apply regular decision, does your financial aid package come with the acceptance letter if you are accepted? I only ask because the date that decisions for regular comes out is really late

hey just wondering if anyone on this thread has been accepted already and if you’re going to the early decision accepted students thing on Feb. 25

Hey Manwich, when we go to accepted students day, the itinerary says we get our ID photo taken. Should we dress up for it? Thanks

the school ID photo only shows your head/face so you don’t have to dress up

OK thanks.
and to answer your first question, yes I have been accepted and I do plan on attending Feb. 25 if you didnt figure out already.haha
