Ask (Another) CMU Student

Hey guys, I'm a freshman at CMU who'd be happy to answer questions. Congrats to you ED 2018'ers! I suspect you're pretty curious about dorms, campus culture, campus life, etc. Feel free to ask whatever you want. Have at it!

Hi,
I’m currently in the process of applying RD to the SCS at CMU. My second choice major would be ECE at CIT. I was wondering if in the writing supplement, I should focus on both majors or only on my first choice. Further, if it is both majors; would you have any suggestions in adapting the statement to suit both?

Thank you!

How is Henderson?

Your essay should focus on both majors. Here’s how I’d outline it:

A. My goals, interests, and relevant work plans. [Describe these in a way that makes SCS the best fit and makes ECE a decent substitute. This is the first 50% of the essay.]
B. Why SCS is the best fit for me. [Mention multiple reasons why SCS is great: a professor you’d love to work with, clubs you’d want to join, etc. This is the 25-30% of the essay.]
C. Why I’m also interested in ECE. [Use fewer reasons that you did for SCS. Make sure, however, that your interest in ECE is still clear. This is 15-20% of the essay.]
D. Conclusion

Let me know if you have more questions.

I can’t say, as I don’t know anyone who lives there. However, Housing Services might be able to put you in touch with current Henderson residents.

Hi!
This may be a strange question, but i applied to Tepper a few days back and along side my app i sent the form for athletic recruitment. I also emailed the coach and sent him my stats etc. So today i get an email saying “seasons greetings and we hope you are part of our team in the near future.”
I was wondering if this means that i’ve been selected to be part of the team or if its just some automated message (it was sent from the coach’s email address) and also if it’s legit and they want me as part of their team then how will it effect my admissions decision considering that my stats match the 75th percentile sorta.
Cheers!

I don’t know what that means, but the atheletic department might. Call them up when they’re open. If you can’t get a straight answer, take the email as a good sign.

^^ I think that might mean you’re in

Thanks for your responses guys!
Please do inform if you can get more info on this subject.

I was a cross country/track recruit and got that same e-mail last year. I didn’t think anything of it (it might mean something, but I’m not entirely sure). But if it makes you feel better, I did get accepted and am a freshman at CMU!

I think it means he likes your stats and wants you on the team. That might not mean you’re in (your app probably hasn’t been reviewed yet) but it’s a good sign to have the coach backing you up.

Hey!

Do you think it’s easier for girls to get into engineering? My counselor said it would be better, but I was scared it would hurt my chances so indicated MCS as my first choice and CIT as second. Now I’m starting to doubt myself… Can you shed some light?

Thanks!

^^
I wouldn’t say it’s necessarily easier for girls to get into CIT. Yes, there are less female applicants to CMU in general, but there also less females that get accepted. I’m not exactly sure about the ratio.

If you’ve already submitted your application, you won’t be able to change what you put as your first choice. But consider this: are you more interested in MCS or CIT? Whichever one you are more interested in will likely come across in your application, and I’d say your chances are better with that specific college (although you actually can be accepted to more than one). Good luck!

Hey there, I’m applying to CIT and probably SCS as the secondary school. I am secure in my interest in engineering because I know I want to work in the clean energy industry later. One thing I am also really looking for in a college is breadth; as a person with really diverse academic interests, I would like to go somewhere where I can take high-quality classes in Liberal Arts-type fields as my electives. It may sound kind of irrelevant, as my major itself would be in engineering (or computer science), and I know of CMU’s reputation in engineering, but the variety and high quality of those other classes is something that I would really appreciate.

I saw the general education requirements for CIT, and they seem to be decent - not much free reign for electives, but not too little. Can someone shed light on this, and also the quality of some of the non-technical disciplines? Thanks so much.

You can definitely get that breadth at CMU. As an engineering or CS major (assuming you don’t double major), you’ll have plenty of space in your schedule to take humanities courses. Don’t worry about whether these courses count towards major reqs; take them because you want to. CMU is a fairly tough school, but you’ll find time for to study humanities if that’s important to you.

As for quality, I think you’ll be fine. I’ve heard good things about our poli sci, DS (Decision Science), philosophy, and language courses. I myself took a language course and absolutely loved it (my professor was the best!).

I got accepted ED for CIT and my “why carnegie mellon” essay was all about this! I definitely wanna minor in spanish (use dat AP credit) and probably take some art classes. Carnegie Mellon’s strength in humanities, theater, and art yet overarching awesomeness at engineering was the deciding factor for me.

Just a quick question, is the Language Technologies Institute part of the School of Computer Science for undergraduates? Or just graduate students?

There is an undergraduate minor available in Language Technology.

[CMU - Language Technologies Institute - Education](http://www.lti.cs.cmu.edu/education/undergraduateminor.shtml)

I want to see what student clubs there are at CMU, but I can’t find any. I don’t think there is a list online (I searched several times). Do you have a quick list of clubs that you could please give me?

While you need an Andrew ID to see much of the content, here’s a list of organizations at CMU:
https://thebridge.cmu.edu/Organizations

Does anyone how to obtain the Andrew ID? The admission letter provides an “Admission ID”, but when I tried to access the website that could check the Andrew ID – I was getting an error.
