I have been attending MSU for two years, I am majoring nursing.
If you guys have a question, please feel free to ask me.
Other majors, ask me too! I can pretty answer most of your questions.

How’s the computer science major in MSU? Could you please tell me all you know about computer science classes, faculty, and anything else related to a CS major? And what’s the difference between majoring from Engineering and from Lyman and Briggs (I think that’s how you spell it :P)?

Also, I know astronomy isn’t offered as a minor or anything, but while majoring in computer science, will I be able to take some Astronomy/Astrophysics classes? It’s something I’ve always wanted to try…

i’ll be starting at msu this fall and i am also majoring in nursing. i was just wondering how rigorous you would say the work is (how many hours do you spend studying, is it extremely difficult to maintain a 3.5+ GPA, etc). i’m just worried about having to reapply into the program after 2 years since i know its really competitive.

How do you like the larger college atmosphere??..I was planning on going to a smaller college near home and commuting…but I don’t want to miss out on being a college student.

RON, look into a residential college that interests you. I am in the Residential College in the Arts and Humanities. It is a small college within MSU, so you get that small college intimacy with the resources and life of a big university.

Yeah Im looking into the Honors College

Computer science is pretty competitive at MSU. I am not sure if I am the best person to advise you for computer major, but I highly recommend you to make an appointment with the career advisers who can be found at career service center or department of computer science. Lyman Brigss is separate college, if you get into college, you have to take their classes like Lyman Briggs Calculus one instead of just university calculus. Lyman Briggs is not honors college, but their classes are hard and taught by lyman briggs college faculties. You can find more info [Lyman Briggs College at Michigan State University - Residential College - Science and Society](<a href=“Lyman Briggs College | Michigan State University”>http://lymanbriggs.msu.edu/)

Why don’t you minor astronomy/astrophysics classes or you can take some introductory courses for that if you are considering it. But, computer science major is pretty intense from what I heard. I am majoring nursing, but no one has minor because it is too stressful and impossible to take other classes with nursing courses. But, if you are willing to do it and can handle your time management, why don’t you try? Talk to your adviser at computer science department. Each department has advisers that you can talk.
Let me know if you have more q, I apologize if my answers are not exactly what you expected.

Honestly, I liked it. You meet variety of people meaning MSU is very diverse. You’ll meet people you might have never heard, and they are friendly! Professors are so nice, and campus is beautiful. you can’t walk anywhere and walk to different dorms and eat at cafeterias.

Commuting would be a different. Many students who live on dorms tend to make more friends because if you make one friend, then you just make connetions to others.

In order to get into Honors College, the requirement is like 3.5 in the first semester if you didn’t get in. I was accepted for honors program, but declined since it would be too hard. But, definitely looks good on your resume.

^ Thanks that was really helpful. I checked online though, and I saw that Astronomy/Astrophysics wasn’t offered as a minor, only a major. Is it still possible to minor in Astronomy/Astrophysics some how?

I don’t mind the extra work, Astronomy is definitely something I want to study but on their list of minors, Astronomy wasn’t there =[.

Can’t you also get in the Honors college the first semester if you have a 30+ ACT and top 10% of class??

No, you have to be in the top 5 percent to get into honors.

^ Is honors guaranteed for you if you’re in the top 5% and 30+ ACT? Or is it still further selective?

Thanks

That I don’t know. It is by invitation only. I am a parent. I do know that if you don’t get into honors right away you can join it later. They also have a Academic Scholars program (or they did 2 years ago) that is for students that don’t quite meet the honors requirements and they later can join the honors program.

Im pretty sure its not further selective. I know for a fact that the honors college even makes exceptions (ex. top 7%, 32 ACT), the MSU honors college dean told me

I can understand that. I know of a valedictorian (ranked number 1) who had a 28 ACT and was offered Academic Scholars instead of Honors. She could still take honors classes and apply to honors later.

They don’t make too many exceptions though and the class rank thing is BS. I graduated with over a 3.8 and a 33 ACT, but was only in the top 16% (major grade inflation in non-honors/AP classes) so I didn’t even get academic scholars. No worries, because even if you don’t get in you can take honors classes (like I am). At AOP it said I was eligible to take honors in every subject, but am not “good enough” for even Academic Scholars. I will hopefully be in next year though :).

/rant

^Yeah, it stinks for us who take hard classes =[
