abe456,

I’d say TCNJ is a low reach just based on your stats. 3.5 GPA is good but 540 CR will probably hurt you. It also depends what your EC’s were and how committed you were to them, along with the rigor of your classes. Although applying ED will definitely help. gl

Hi,

My son applied to TCNJ. It’s the only school he wants to consider - but I insisted that he apply to a number of others just because I don’t know if I can afford to send him if he does get in.

Can you give me an idea of what it takes to get an academic scholarship? What about community service? My son has spent a lot of time volunteering.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks Hazel Eyes!

Then, do you think it’s better to apply undeclared or undecided? Because, I’m hearing from other people that it is a better alternative.

Thanks, once again

undeclared/undecided could be a good option…then your first year you would most likely focus on the liberal learning requirements…if you are REALLY leaning towards one area but just aren’t sure which subject you want to focus on you could also apply as open options…I know it’s a difficult decision to make but in then end you’ll figure it out :)

My HS senior:
30 ACT composite
800 CR / 730 W / 730 M (2260)
SAT Sub: Bio (780), Literature (650), History (710)
PSAT: 212
AP Scholar w/Honors (Calc A/B = 5, History = 5, Literature = 4, Biology = 4)
Top 3% of class
Not sure of average, I know weighted it’s over 4.0.

Not a lot of EC, but has been consistent with interests throughout HS years.

Major: Communications/Journalism (not broadcast journalism)

In State (NJ): TCNJ and Rowan
OOS: American University, NYU, Northeastern, Washington and Lee, University of Maryland

Mom’s preference: TCNJ
Senior’s preference: American, Washington and Lee
Senior’s early favorite was Northeastern (waived application fee thru NMS).

Though the school counselors are heavy on the “don’t make your decisions to apply based on the cost” the reality is that we won’t qualify for financial aid and I’m not an advocate of massive loans and huge debt after graduation so all those OOS schools are WAY down on my list unless they come with super merit aid.

I’m really hoping TCNJ is the winner in the end.

I’d like to plan a trip there soon and I’m SO hoping senior will be impressed.
From what I’ve seen posted I think my senior has a good chance of getting accepted to TCNJ.
Does anyone know whether an application for merit aid is required?

Also, there are five more AP classes this year. Any idea how the school will allow them to be used to satisfy requirements?

Thanks!

im pretty sure merit aid is awarded based on class rank / SAT’s…could be wrong though. don’t think there’s a separate application.

Yeah, no separate application for merit aid. Based on your child’s scores, I’d say you have a great chance of getting the max amount of merit aid.

Here are the class equivalents for AP scores:

There just happens to be an article on front page of the Atlantic City Press today about NJ college efforts with need based and merit based aid.

The site url is: New Jersey colleges buy brightest, while other students pay for it

The article is on the front page of the Sunday press today.

Hello! I have two questions regarding admissions. The first is that I applied on November 1st. Around what time will I know if I was accepted or not? (I did not apply for early decision and I applied in Nursing). My other question in the acceptance letter, do they include the financial aid packet in the letter if you are admitted or does the packet follow?

Skippiedoo,

According to the information on collegeboard.com for TCNJ they begin rolling notifications on January 15th.

And, from what I can tell from the ED notifications that have been posted the acceptance material includes financial aid information, but I could not determine if it was merit only or need based.

Good luck!

yeah it was just merit aid in the acceptance packet

Thanks Hazeleyes. Accepted! See you in August or September.

what are the ranking for the hard programs to get in to?
i applied to early childhood education and was wondering if that was competitive.

when you are accepted are you automatically binding in your major? so you can’t change it or double? how 'bout minor?

No, you are not bound to your major. To change, you just need to fill out some forms. It’s pretty effortless unless you’re trying to get into bio (not sure sure if there are any others). To double major/minor, you just have to take the necessary courses and tell your adviser. Not sure if you have to do anything extra though.

For some minors you may have to first go to an info session before you fill out the form (and get the advisors signature). This is what I had to do for my music minor. I’m not sure if other minors require this or not.

what about the theater minor?

I wasn’t offered any scholarships for my freshman year due to not so great high school GPA. If I do really well my freshman year, will I be offered scholarship money for sophomore?

Anybody know about the scholarships?
