Ask current Penn students anything!

Is Mac computer also popular for Penn students?

^ I would say about 50-60% of Penn undergrads have Macs. As a College (/Engineering double major), I’ve found mine to be pretty compatible with nearly all my courses.

Go with whichever computer you feel comfortable with. Chances are that you’ll become so used to spending time in Huntsman Hall / Moore 100 / insert your favorite study spot that, in the rare event that you’d need to use software that you can’t get on a Mac, you’ll already be in or near a room with a computer that has said software installed.

Is there a club for beginner tap dancers? I would like to learn while in college :)

I just got the results from my reevaluation. I would still have to pay $5700/yr. My mother is very reluctant to take our more than $3000/yr so it’s either Penn or Hampton for me :-/ I’m not sure what to do.

Simplyme18,
I sent you a private message.

Hey, I had a question about the social life at Gregory. I will be living there next year (class of 1925 building), and have heard some bad things about how isolated it is…will this have a negative impact on my freshman year? :C

@milkandoreos I used to live at Gregory and I remember we used to have a lot of freshman between the two buildings. I would say going to events in both Class of 1925 and in Van Pelt is a great way to meet other freshmen – especially because Gregory has TONS of events each week.

Ok, that’s great news  Here’s to hoping my freshman year is stellar. Thanks!

I’m only an incoming junior in high school although penn nursing is my number one school choice. What classes do first year nursing students take? And how difficult is it to get accepted into the school? I haven’t found much info on the nursing program thoughf

@Sheaalala: Although I am not in Nursing, my roommate is so I’m pretty familiar with the program. I believe that first year nursing students take microbiology, chemistry, anatomy, some nursing seminar class, and other general ed classes to fulfill language/sector requirements. In terms of selectivity, I believe the acceptance rate is around 20%…it’s very hard to say how “difficult” it is to get in but the general consensus is that while some of the other schools within Penn (college or engineering for example) may look more highly upon academics, the nursing school focuses more on interest and more subjective factors. For example, do they think you really want to go into nursing or do you have the qualities needed to be a nurse?

The Nursing School had an acceptance rate of 20% for the Class of 2014, when Penn’s overall acceptance rate was 14%:

[The Daily Pennsylvanian :: Nursing School admits 20 percent for 2014](Nursing School admits 20 percent for 2014 | The Daily Pennsylvanian)

For the past 2 years, however, Penn’s overall acceptance rate has been 12% (since an overall increase of several thousand applicants in 2011), so the Nursing School’s acceptance rate also may have dropped a bit.

Hey! So I’m a rising senior planning on applying ED to Penn in the fall. Now for the questions(:

  1. I’m really interested in the LSM program, but if I didn’t get it would it hurt my odds for single degree admission?
  2. There’s lots of talk about the Jewish population at Penn, but I gotta ask haha are there Indians?
Thanks again for doing this thread, it’s helping a lot of people.

@mmarilyn11:

1.) If you’re applying ED, it’s a little tricky in that I believe you will apply exclusively to LSM and UPenn will give you a decision about whether you got into the program exclusively. If you didn’t, then you can still apply RD to either Wharton or the college, just not LSM. That’s what happened to this girl I know; she didn’t get into the Huntsman program ED but then got into Wharton RD. In that sense, it does hurt your chances a little in that you’re sacrificing ED for Wharton or the college, in which the acceptance rates are usually significantly higher than the RD round.
2.) The Indian population is quite high at Penn and the Indian culture is also VERY pervasive. There are tons of popular Indian performing groups (Penn masala, Atma, etc) and culture events!

Thanks that helps a lot! However, I was looking at last fall’s supplement, and saw this…

EARLY DECISION SINGLE-DEGREE OPTION
We will first consider your application to the coordinated dual-degree or accelerated program, Digital Media Design major, or Market and Social Systems Engineering major. If we are unable to admit you as an Early Decision candidate to the special program, and you would like to be considered as an Early Decision candidate to the single-degree option you’ve indicated, please sign below. The offer of admission is binding. Please acknowledge that you have read this and agree to enroll at Penn under the Early Decision Program if admitted to your single-degree choice. If you do not wish to be considered an Early Decision candidate for the single-degree program, please leave the signature line blank.

^ Correct–you will have the option of selecting to be considered ED for one of the schools if you aren’t accepted ED into LSM, or you can choose to be deferred to RD (if you’re not outright rejected during ED). You’ll make that selection in the Penn Supplement to the Common App.

A while back I made a handy flowchart (just replace M&T w/ LSM and SEAS w/ CAS) [Asciiflow - ASCII Flow Diagram Tool](ASCIIFlow)

I’m still only a sophomore in high school but I already love Penn. It’s the most awesomest school ever and you guys must be superduper proud to be there. :)

I have some questions regarding Wharton:
Did a lot of these admitted undergrads have business- or math- related ECs during high school? Most of my ECs are humanities-related activities. Will this make me a weaker candidate for Wharton?
