Some do have a lot of business/math ECs. I think you can put a business twist on anything. Try to find out how you can make your humanities ECs business-like, perhaps by starting a NPO to help kids in your area learn something? You’re still a sophomore, so you have lots of time to develop your interests and tailor them towards Wharton. Personally, I turned my interests in speech and debate and music into organizations that benefited the community in one way or another, none of which are specifically quant/math based activities.

Wow, that’s really smart. Thanks! I actually tutor a lot of little kids in my area, but not like an NPO or anything. We just go to the library to help them do homework and study.

But the problem is I don’t know the first thing about starting a business. I hear about so many kids doing it and they sound so entrepreneur-like. How can i go from tutoring a bunch of kids (many of which have ESL) to founding a small organization?

A lot of students in Wharton aren’t extremely quantitative or mathy, so don’t worry.

Thanks. It’s good to know that I’m not the only one stuck in this situation. :)

As someone who dreams of going to UPenn:

How do you think your fellow students are as a whole? I know there are many people, but as a whole would you think Penn is a place with a good social life, where people are friendly and not snobbish or anything of that sort?

How would you rate both males and females considering physical attractiveness, friendliness? Would you consider your classmates as nerdy or just smart?

Thanks. :)

Note: If I’m offending someone in anyway please tell me, my post wasn’t meant to offend or anything. I just want to know about the social life of a everyday Penn student!

haha standard questions, focus08.

I thought they were fine… my own generalizations about Penn kids were that we like to go out pretty often; parties are ALWAYS free admission; it’s easy to find a group that you enjoy, so it’s not too terribly difficult to find a group of people with similar interests as long as you try.

I suppose the males are alright, and the females seemed to get more attractive as I made my way through undergrad. A fair number of girls are completely insane, but that kinda comes with girls’ existence. Regarding nerdy vs. smart… Not gonna lie, I had in-depth, serious socio-political discussions with friends while we were obliterated… and this happened more than once. Most of the people I met were interesting, if nothing else, and I have three great groups of friends I still hang out with frequently!

Thanks for the reply That’s all that I really wanted to know!

Hey I got in off the waitlist and they put me in Harnwell… I really want a dorm environment, can I switch out into one of the Quad dorms? Or do I have to wait until October to get a new room?

Hi I am a Junior in High School and I am wondering how much do you think the Subject tests weigh in evaluation ED for PENN?? math1-700 math2-680 chem 600
My SAT score is 2150 involved in many things, captain of the Varsity Tennis and Soccer teams, and all the honor society stuff and so on…5.0 GPA top 5% in my class
has anyone here been accepted ED w these stats?

Hi everyone c:
As a Rising Senior, I’m also starting to think about where to apply to college this fall.

I was just wondering if any Penn students could share advice/experience about their college admissions process? I’ve visited Penn and found the campus amazing. I know it’s about more than grades and numbers, but as a background I have a 2320 SAT, 780 SAT II Chem, awaiting an ACT score. Extracurricular list is relatively filled. I have an interest in science but don’t have any particular field set yet, but my activities and ECs match my interest quite well. If I applied ED, do you think I’d have a chance? For reference, 4 out of 27 people that applied in my high school have gotten into Penn.

@TallDrumKing, I don’t think we’re allowed to switch dorms sorry! But if it makes you feel any better, I also got placed into Harnwell (which was my 2nd choice), and I’m sure all the Harnwell people will be open to meeting up :)

hi is the Why Penn? essay a yearly repeating question? i am entering my senior year and would like to get started on some essays??
what do you recommend?

I don’t typically respond to applicant questions, but that’s actually a good one, hilster. Many applicants think that they will stand out if they are somehow clever and do some special stylistic thing. The thing is, the admissions committee has seen upwards of 100,000 applications in the past four years… meaning even if your essay is more clever than 99.9% of your peers’, the committee has already seen a hundred other essays that were just as clever.

Don’t try too hard. Let your personality shine through. Feel free to be somewhat casual while not including any grammatical or spelling mistakes. Don’t make it about how you are the best at everything… show that you and Penn are like peas in a pod. And if you can’t show that, then consider that Penn might not be the place for you… no matter how “prestigious” a school is or how intelligent you are, if you don’t fit in it, you won’t like it

@talldrumking: First of all, congrats on getting off the waitlist!! As of right now, it is very unlikely that you can change rooms and move into the quad b/c the quad rooms are most likely filled since they are very popular. However, once you get on campus, it is possible to switch. One of my suite mates switched from gregory to the quad in Nov so some dorms def become available. However, I honestly would not recommend switching. Harnwell (and the high rises in general) have the best dorms and living conditions on campus. I understand that the quad seems to be the central hangout for freshmen but believe me, having a kitchen and living room has HUGE benefits. Also, housing is not guaranteed all 4 years at Penn and basically everyone wants the high rises after freshmen year so it’s pretty hard to get in. However, if you have already lived there freshmen yr, then you have an advantage in housing selection (they operate on a point system) and you are pretty much guaranteed a rm and you can bring in one outside friend. Trust me, you’ll be thankful you live in Harnwell once housing selection comes around:)

@meatkabob: College admissions are so unpredictable these days so take my opinion with a grain of salt haha! However, I do believe that you have a great chance based on your SATs and ECs alone. Applying ED would also be a huge advantage b/c there’s a ~25% acceptance rate versus the ~12 RD rate. Just make sure your recommendations and essays are up to par and you have a great shot! Good luck:D

Please tell me more about the Kelly Writer’s House. Do students actually live there; what events take place there; do professors frequent it? Thanks

Students don’t LIVE at the Kelly Writers House (at least not officially :)), but you can find out a lot about it by following these three links:

It’s a fantastic and unparalleled resource, and there’s something interesting going on there almost every day and/or night of the week.

I’m thinking of applying ED to Huntsman/Wharton but don’t know because of my financial situation. I mean, what if I don’t get enough aid?

I don’t know if this question has been answered in this thread. If it has, then I’m sorry.

^ Penn is very generous with their financial aid. Very generous.

And even if you dont get enough aid you can always decline admission for that reason

For new students, do you have to test into Math 240 or can you just take the class?
