Ask Me About McGill

Current U0 Arts here; can answer any questions about anything pertaining to McGill or Montreal

Hey I have two quick questions for you :)

I’m from the US, is being an international student likely to make a big impact on an admissions decision?

Looking at the US admission standards for science, my test scores are well above the reqs and all of my grades are fine except I got a B+ in pre-calc. The req is an A-, does this mean I would automatically be rejected from the program?

Thank you!

No, admissions are not more/less difficult coming from the states. Although, tuition is much more for an international (bout 10 thousand more), and there is a lot of paperwork to do (visa, CAQ) if you choose to attend.

The requirements are not concrete - If you have an otherwise excellent transcript, one B won’t hurt. Its not a bad idea to apply to the Faculty of Arts just in case - you can always apply to transfer once you are here.

Hey I’m an American student who has applied. Does McGill take class rank into consideration? And when McGill says B/B+ averages in 10-12, do they mean the average of all classes combined should be a b/b+ minimum?

Also! They say just because you are above the cutoffs doesn’t mean you’re in, but if I am in the IB program, and have a 3.85/ 4.3 GPA will this be enough in addition to a 29 on the ACT for faculty of arts?

I do not believe Class Rank is an important factor in the admissions process; McGill sometimes takes 15 or 0 students from a particular school - your grades are more important then your gpa rank. That said, a few B minuses in grades 10-12 won’t stop you if you have above average (95^ percentile) SATs.

I dunno what your GPA would be in terms of grades, but for Arts you should have straight As in all English, History, and elective courses. For calc or Physics a B is passable. This is just based on what my friends say they got, which I think is a more accurate indicator then their minima.

If you wanted to share your SAT 1 and 2s I could give you a percent chance.

Hiya … parent … our boy applying to McGill for 2014 entry … how important are majors choice or choices? In other words, if management is a very popular major/area, might it be advantageous to find something less popular? Or is this kind of manipulating more trouble than it is worth? Etc … thanks

Ok well the first thing to know about McGill is our faculties (Arts, Sci, Management, Eng, ArtSci, Nursing) are treated like separate schools. You apply into one and pay a tuition based on your choice. Arts is a good choice if your kid wants to do anything in humanities or social sciences. Arts is also the easiest to get into (don’t need to take math Sat 2s). If your kid is a STEM genius, also apply to Sci or Eng, although you need a strong math background with As in each class. If your kid wants to be a Business Major (not just Econ, which can be done from Arts), apply to Desautels (our Management faculty), although again it is more expensive and slightly harder to get into than Arts.

Most american kids with less than 4 AP tests done are in Year 0, which means they study for 4 years (Quebec kids and some internationals with a lot of AP-like tests done can graduate in 3) Year 0 kids register for a wider range of courses for a sampler sorta experience (they have a sort of core requirement for courses in different subjects).

To answer your question, McGill doesn’t care about your Major coming in, and you declare as a Year 1 (2nd year of schooling for Year 0 kids)

Thanks good answer

Hi niestspe!

How good is your engineering program?

Will I have to pay international tuition fees if I am also a Canadian citizen?

How do American employers and graduate schools view McGill?

Stupid question, how would you rate the campus and students, lol?

With all due respect I don’t understand why McGill, the “Harvard of Canada”, seems to have such lax admissions standards. Am I missing something?

I did not take SAT II since McGill only requires ACT OR SAT + SAT II

Don’t know too much about the reputation of our ENG program, though the few engineering students I know are very bright with intimidating test scores.

Tuition fees go Quebecker < Other Canadian < International. Check the site for actual numbers.

Although Career planning at McGill is utter crap, McGill has very good brand recognition and is highly ranked in employer surveys [International Herald Tribune, New York Times - McGill in top 20 worldwide: CEO survey | Newsroom - McGill University](International Herald Tribune, New York Times - McGill in top 20 worldwide: CEO survey | Newsroom - McGill University)

Even though there is construction 24/7 and its loud, the campus is fun and awe inspiring 10/10. Most students here are very strong academically though a few people here make me scratch my head as to how they even read the map to get to Montreal. thats the case at every top tier school though.

McGill isn’t the Harvard of Canada. Thats an inside joke here. Think more like University of Michigan or NYU (I’d like to point out though that we are streets ahead of UofToronto-That schools is still a joke that somehow fudges itself in the international rankings). McGill is huge if you haven’t noticed and we are big on sports - two things that are not traits of Ivies. The high acceptance average is sorta self selection - we are a safety school for Ivies. Of course they accept every kid with a 2200 on his SATs who applied to HYPS and every other top 10. Entering averages tell more than acceptance rate.

AndroidRawal:

not sure if i can chance you just based on ACTs and Grades - Your best bet would be to check out Mcgill.ca and poke around. That website is a maze but has tons of valuable info

Hi, do you know exactly how strict McGill is with their set minimum requirements? I do not fulfill one requirement (SAT critical reading score), and I was just wondering if you knew how much that could affect me. Thanks.

The Admission minima this year go 620CR 600M 600W. If you do not meet any of those, I do not recommend applying. There are very few factors used to judge your application, SATS are a large part.

I already applied, but I am only 30 points under for CR. I am well above for the other 2 along with GPA, so hopefully they can look past the CR score.

HI!
How is McGills arts program? I know McGill is known for more of a math/sciencey brained school aka “research institution”… What’s your area of study, and do you feel like you’re learning as much as you could?

kyle,

If your GPA and other sat scores are really outstanding, then I guess you have a shot. Doesn’t hurt to take them again and send in new scores late.

EleanorRigby1995,

McGills arts program is comparable to the ones at other top tier universities. of course introductory arts courses (think intro to psych) are huge and depressing. Many language and literature courses are taught in small classrooms with very knowledgeable and accessible profs who are excellent at what they teach.

I am currently mostly registered for courses in the German dept (my intended major). The faculty is top notch.

That being said, Science and Engineering is dominant at McGill. They get all the attention and money, but Arts still has some weight.

I hope this answered your question

Hi! Canadian citizen living in the US here! (Applying as Alberta Canadian)

First of all, McGill is such a beautiful school. I visited and loved it there.

 1. I think applying is rather difficult because it doesn’t use Common App. After I pay the 100 admission fee, will I get a Minerva account? Is there more steps afterward?

2) Also, does McGill look at ECs or teach recs very seriously? I’m going into economics.

3) When you say McGill accepts over 2200 “automatically” are you generalizing or is that absolutely true. 2280 one sitting here.

4) you don’t seem to like UToronto. Why is that?

5) If you can, chance me please!
2280 SAT
800,800, unknown SAT IIs
Top 3% gpa in 400 students
ECs: captain swim team, VP and Treasurer SNHS, NHS, NEHS, science bowl
Awards minor and not really impressive
200+ consistent volunteer hours
No essay right?
Does McGill require 2 teach req? Coach req?

Thanks so much! I know it’s a lot, but I love McGill !!

Applying is very easy. They give you a portal to fill in info and see what has been received.

McGill doesn’t care about your ECs. Or recs. really. They ONLY ask for test scores and GPA. Its stated pretty plainly on the site.

If you have more than a 700 in each SAT 1, you are pretty much set if you have a B+ or A average in school. Your SAT 2s can be anywhere 650 and up to be safe.

UofT is cool, they just get way more money then McGill (Quebec redistributes tuition among universities) so they put out tons of research. Sorta explains why they rose insanely in rankings. We actually dropped from 18 to 21, because our Student to Teacher ratio dropped (Quebec is sorta sticking it to McGill right now for some reason). However our administration has been very transparent and fiscally responsible and we are back in the green again.

Go ahead and buy a McGill sweatshirt.
